How to Leverage the power of Twitter
During my first month at Wealthy Affiliate, I've discovered the power of social media in driving traffic to a hobby-oriented site like mine. Each hobby has its own social media fan club, often several such groups. These groups are found on Facebook. Each group has a leader or a "pied piper".
You need to identify those individuals. If you are passionate about your niche, you probably already know them.
Once you have identified those individuals, find them on Twitter and follow them. Become engaged with them by "favoriting" and "retweeting" their Tweets, as long as they are relevant to your niche. I believe it makes sense to do this whether or not this person has a blog or fan site that is in "competition" with yours or not.
Chances are, these pied pipers aren't tweeting about their hobby to make revenue, but to really express their love for it online and share their joy. Even if they do have some adsense ads or affiliate links, this internet is huge marketplace with enough business to go around for everyone.
Build relationships because YOU are now one of the pied pipers.
This gesture of good-will encourages these pied pipers to follow you. . They will begin to retweet your posts, and a natural sharing of YOUR keyword optimized content. This is what you are after, a cascade of tweets to and among your mutual followers. You will find traffic results. That has been my experience with MyGeocachingStory.com, but could easily be used to bring traffic to your site!

I get about 1000 tweets a day, if not more, and I follow only 285, most people do get much more, because they follow more, impossible to follow up and read or react on all of them, can't see the value in twitter anymore, only the @eimhier I react on
I don't get it straight how this can work, can you explain it in an easy way?
Loes, you just need to drastically edit how many accounts you're following. Strategy and relevance are your keys. I only am following 45, and they're not all relevant to my niche- I could reduce this further.
He John, you say I have to unfollow all not niche related not relevant accounts? I have to unfollow about 200 all WA-ers:)

Great idea John. One of those things that with the benefit of hindsight seems obvious. But probably doesn't occur to people when they are thinking about how to build their audience.
