Usually, that's one of the top places put use to put affiliate banners - it's recommended not to overload it at the beginning of your blogging journey but it is definitely a good idea to use it eventually.
That's just a personal opinion - I don't declare to be 100% right about it :)

Backlinkwatch is a good tool to see how long a website has been around. I use it. But, I also use the Moz toolbar to check how Spammy a website might be: Moz Toolbar - Page Authority, Domain Authority, MozRank, MozTrust
