choosing a niche

I remember back in the day (yes i am showing my age) when i would have to go in the house, pick up the phone and call my friends, then sit by the phone and wait for them to call me. The only way i found out what was new in music was to listen to the radio or go to the store and look at the list of the top 100 songs that were out. Today I can go online and find out anything that i would ever care to know about without even having to get to a computer now with smartphones. Making choosing a niche one of the easiest things to do now. But I also want to be smart at picking a niche. Because i can work hard at online marketing and never be successful but if I work hard at being smart I will be successful. That is why I joined WA.

I spent a few days thinking about what niche i want to do. Several ideas were

1: finding a niche that a larger percentage of the population needs and wants. Needs first. The biggest of course I think of is food. Every single person has to eat. Where as say car stereos as an example although great to have but if a recession hits i will probably skip the new stereo and head to the grocery store.

2. An untapped niche. New items are being designed all of the time. My ex-son in law got into the ecigs when they first came out. He borrowed $400 from his dad to buy some and sell them and today he is almost a millionaire. He got in early, believed in the product and stuck with it. So continuing to watch as new products are being developed will be a constant monitoring for me.

3. I have the ability to tap into any niche i choose by taking the time to research and become familiar with it. Enough research and studying i can become a professional in my designated niche. Simply picking a niche, setting up a website and promoting is no the end of the road. Watching new trends and developments, market trends etc. Staying up on my niche is very important to me.

4. Pick a niche that i love or would love. Because lets face it. If i love it, it will make it a heck of a lot easier to get into it.

5 A niche that is a repeat sale. I can sell one item to one person and be successful or would I rather sell the same product to the same person over and over?

So for my niche I am choosing pet supplies. But to narrow it down and not keep it so broad just like the

suggests I am narrowing it down to dog food and supplies.

This year so far in the U.S. alone $62.75 billion dollars have been spent on pets. 79.7 million homes own a pet. The highest of pets is at 54.4 million homes owning a dog in the U.S alone. Plus it is a proven recession proof market because lets face it, like us dogs still have to eat and be cared for.

Plus we have a couple dogs and I am a dog lover making it easier to be interested in.

Hope this helps anyone else out there trying to decide a good niche to choose. Best of luck.

Good information...Thanks!

Ah, the good old days!

I think you're on the right track by narrowing down your niche. You can always expand or move sideways. Or, for that matter, you could even broaden your niche. All depends on the numbers.

Good luck, Jim.

This is a very good brainstorming post about how to choose a niche which I am sure everyone can benefit from. Great post Jim!
