2 pages or 20+ pages?

Hi WA members!

So I've been here about 2 months now. I'm almost done with Kyle's Certification Courses, I've spent the last few days reading through a lot of Steve's (IveTriedThat) training (excellent stuff if you haven't yet checked it out you should) and listening to a bunch of Jay's (magistufios) Webinars, including some older ones that Steve recommended. All really good stuff!!

BUT now I'm a little confused and I'm hoping someone can help clear things up for me.

So Kyle and Steve both seem to suggest that you choose a niche and write content, lots of content. Your website is never finished, you should blog at least 2 times a week and by doing that google will find you, see that you are serious and hopefully start ranking you. Okay cool, makes senses.

Now in some of Jay's webinars when he talks about choosing a niche, its more about choosing a specific product. For example Lighted Kindle Cover or Xbox wireless controller. He then goes on and builds a website with only 2 pages. No blog, no comments. Just one or 2 pages about the product, promoting and reviewing the product and then encouraging the reader to buy it at amazon or someplace similar. So how does this get ranked if you aren't continuously adding content? Because if I'm understanding some of Steve's training, he says that if you aren't adding content google may think you aren't up to date and therefore not rank you.

So I'm just wondering, why? what's the difference? Am I missing something? Am I not understanding the training's correctly? I'm just a little confused. If anyone could shed some light on this for me I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!!

Jill

The answer Beverly gave makes a lot of sense. Also, I'm just wondering when Jay's video that you're referring to aired? Things have changed a lot in the past couple of years. So what was said in 2011 may be a bit different than now.

I read Steve's "My Top 9 Tips for Internet Marketing Beginners" and in it he suggested watching 4 of Jay's older videos. So I did. The 2 that talked about niches were "finding a profitable niche" aired in 11/2010 and "online marketing quick start" aired in 3/2011.

Hi Jill -
They are talking about two different types of sites. As Mike has explained Jay is talking about a quick niche site which focuses on a single product. They can still get a position in Google because he will still have chosen his keywords carefully. Depending on the popularity of the product some will do very well and others may only have a very short life span. Jay is very successful with these types of sites and a few years ago many people did a lot of them.

More recently authority sites have grown in popularity which is what Kyle and Steve are talking about. Where you do have multiple pages and you consistently add content to your site to attract visitors and gain rankings. The word is that Google favours these sites over the niche sites.

My advice is that you start with an authority site because it give you more scope to learn the ins and outs of building a successful website.

Hi Beverley! I was hoping you would chime in and reply!! Thank you so much for your input. I totally understand what you are saying and it makes a lot more sense now. Thanks again! -Jill

This is the exact answer I would have given. Jay tends to favor niche sites while I like authority sites. Neither is wrong, just personal preference. Both are valid ways of making money with a website.

Thank you Steve!

Some products you can capture the current hot trend and get in front of and those are just designed to get sales during the "burst of interest" they would likely peak and not sustain themselves -- they are niches but not the authority niches where you would develop around an interest you want to spend extended time and energy with. An authority site would grow out -- you might start with a limited perspective but grow it out to subtopics. It can be confusing. And sometimes what you think might be just a quick niche will develop further which can be even more confusing.

Sounds confusing LOL. Thank you for some clarification.

Let's see what happens, cause I have no answer either.

I have notice this also and I am glad you brought it up. Thanks for asking for all of us.

I'll be very interested in this answer as well.

Hi Jill: Thanks for posting this because I'm kinda wondering the same thing. With very narrow niche topics, it seems like it would be very difficult to write new fresh content about it on a regular basis anyway. So I'm sure there are niche sites that only have a few pages of content and still get ranked. Just not sure how. Hopefully some of the "big dogs" jump in here with some info.

good to know I'm not the only one confused. I was beginning to wonder if it was just me :-) I'm keeping my fingers crossed the "big dogs" answer us!!
