I have had the honor to man the rails of an aircraft carrier and pay tribute to the Arizona Memorial as we stood at attention while the carrier passed the memorial.

It was a very somber event but really made me appreciate those that gave their lives that Sunday morning.

As a 16 year Navy Chief, this is a day that always makes me stop and just be thankful for what I have and for those who I owe it to.

Thank you for your Naval service Eric. I've never been there, but I love your description--I can only imagine the awe and honor I would've felt!

I have a very different relationship to Pearl Harbor, as I may have mentioned here before.

Without it I would not have been born. My father was in the army reserve and he knew immediately that he would be going, as indeed he did. My parents had not yet started a family, and before he left, they started... me. I was born 9 months and 2 weeks after Pearl Harbor.

Wow, Rosana--I didn't remember that! It's a pretty cool part of your history!

Hi Jeffery
I must thank you for the reminder to all of us about the soldiers... Who made the ultimate sacrifice of giving their lives in that war.
I will never forget the history lessen I learned Pearl Harbor. My heart still goes out to the families of all those soldiers who paved the way for the next generation to come

Yes, way before my time though. It was part of our history lessons in Australia.
One of my early teachers was a former Dutch Naval Officer who had escaped the Japanese in Indonesia.
Interesting guy he was. Standing in front of the class, cigarette lit, quick maths quiz ' A packet of smokes costs X, I smoke a packet a day, how much more money would I have If I gave these up for a year.".
Misbehave and you got the Dutch National Anthem played out on your backside with a cane.
Michael.

Wow, certainly interesting times, Micheal--thanks for sharing! I could actually see that in my mind's eye!

That's him on the right, Jeffrey, ciggie in his right hand. The guy on the left is William Willis. He sailed a raft across the Pacific from Peru to Australia.
When he landed on the Australian coast it was dark and the weather was fairly rough.
My future teacher picked up Willis's call for assistance, launched his boat, found Willis and his raft and towed it back up the coast into a safe harbour.
Michael.

Thank you for sharing this, Michael--that is so very cool! Your teacher looks like one tough customer, indeed!

The University of North Texas' Oral History department had a project where survivors of the attack on Pearl Harbor were interveiwed by doctoral students. It was part of our class assignment.

It was among the most moving, memorable, and humbling experiences of my life. I think it's one of the most important things I've done in my life - to bring these stories to life. I think that we managed to locate and interview a good majority of those still living at the time. If you're ever in Denton, Texas, it is well worth an afternoon to visit and find a comfy chair. Incredible stories of courage, heroism, survival, and brotherhood. Bring a kleenex.

Christine

No doubt, Christine--when we think of ALL the members of that GREATEST generation, it will certainly bring tears to our eyes for all they had to endure to save the entire world at that time!
