Which One Are You?
If you are here because you lost your job and need income, I wish you the best of luck and hope that your funds can sustain you until your business gets going. It's going to be stressful I'm sure, but keep working at it and taking steps toward your goal. I'm not going to lie to you, it's going to be tough. In this day and age with the uncertainty of 'regular' employment, many are being forced into looking for alternate income every day.If you are NOT in dire need of income, DON'T wait until the loss of your job is the motivating factor to get you 'doing'. If you start now, you can take your time and not be as stressed about rankings and monetizing. Even if you aren't making 'retirement' money right away, you will be moving in the right direction and creating your first cash streams. A couple of these combined could be the difference maker should things in the corporate world go South.
Why Now?
I got to thinking about this over the weekend as I was half-watching TV. One of those "Nightline" type shows was interviewing a seemingly typical family. Husband worked, wife was stay at home mom, a couple kids, house, car, etc... As is happening these days, the dad gets laid off and they are panicked! Bills piling up, unemployment runs out, savings runs out, they were basically blindsided by it and ill prepared.They were talking about cutting down their expenses and mentioned a figure they needed to 'get by' on and I couldn't stop thinking if they had just 2 or 3 small but good sites or a few more mediocre income streams, they probably could have sustained themselves much longer or even indefinitely!
Be Realistic In Your Expectations
One of the biggest problems I see is that people have unreal expectations. They buy into the hype and expect to make $10,000 a month with 2 clicks of their mouse. (It takes THREE by the way) When they aren't doing that in the first week, they get discouraged, impatient, and ultimately give up before giving it a real chance.Start small and build on your successes to keep you going. Most beginners are excited to make their first sale. That's a good first goal! After that, shoot for $100 a month...$500 a month...
Think about how much an extra $500 a month could change your life. That's a new car payment..a good chunk of a rent or mortgage payment. That would probably buy my food for a month or more!
Is it hard to get $500 a month?
It depends on a lot of factors, but if you never get started DOING then it is impossible.

Great article! I am working on goal setting right now because I was trying to hard to make it work NOW! Doing stupid things like working for 6 hours at a time with no breaks and no food. Yea... I learned my lesson. I will be setting those goals and reasonable steps to achieving the goals.
i've been at this for almost half of an hour and haven't made my first million yet - i quit - JK - thanks for your post - in our age of 'instant gratification' and with all of these 3 click millionaire guru shysters around, it's hard to remember the old adage "the harder i work, the luckier i get"
Great post Jon. Building a business that you can rely on to generate monthly income takes time but it's ABSOLUTELY a realistic goal to expect. 10's of thousands of WA members over the years have earned their first dollars online by dedicating themselves to Wealthy Affiliate University and our training. For some it takes weeks, for others it may take months, but success happens to ALL who take action.
This post is a call-out to all WA members to start DOING. Take action and DO something right now. Write an article, find some keywords, ask some questions, read/watch some training.
Do not go searching for another "opportunity" because the Internet is full of gimmicks and false promises. We're not promising anything.. we want YOU to promise yourself that you will take action and dedicate yourself to our training. Then you will achieve those goals and create the income stream that you are looking for.

This is a very helpful note. Please get started today, it can't hurt, and will only benefit if something negative does happen. And you're right, it'll take time, keep plugging away and don't get discouraged
Very true about the extra $500 a month...
I am constantly in court (well that's an exageration, every few months) with my ex about back child support. That extra $500 a month makes a huge difference when you have a teenage girl!
