Adding Posts to Page Drop Down Menus

A member here recently asked about how to add posts to a page drop down menu. Here are step by step instructions on how to do that.

To add posts to a page drop down menu

Begin by going to your site dashboard and opening the post you'd like to add in edit mode. On the right, select the "Preview" button and this will open your site and bring up your post in a separate window.

Return to the window that has your dashboard open. On the right side of your screen bring your mouse down to Appearance and select “Menus”. On the Edit Menus tab you will see a box on the left labeled “Pages”. This box shows all of the pages you created when you built your site and should have any others you’ve created since then.

Your posts will not show up here so you’ll have to add them as a “Custom Link”. Return to the window where your site is open and bring up the post you’d like to include in your drop down menu. Copy the URL. Go back to your “Edit Menus” box and select “Custom Link”. Paste the URL into the appropriate box and type the title of your post in the box that says “Menu Item”. Click Add to Menu.

Your post should now show up on the right side of the page under Menu Structure. You can move these items around by clicking and dragging them to the position you want within the menu.

To make your post show up in a drop down menu, drag it to a position below the page you want it to show up under and align it slightly to the right of the page title. When you do this the words “sub item” will show up in the box along with the title of your post and you will know that it’s correctly positioned to show up as a drop down.

Repeat this for any other posts you want to add and then be sure to click the blue “Save Menu” box to save your changes. If you still have your site open in another window, you can click the refresh button to check that your drop down menu looks the way you want it.

Hope this helps!

Jan

Thanks for the post. This was not easy. I don't have too many posts yet so can fix them all. I have book marked this post so I can do each post as I go. Thanks again!

THANK YOU! I was getting so frustrated with this and couldn't find a solution, and you have just made it easy as pie!

Thanks Jan. Just applied your easy to understand info to my website posts.

Perfect Jan, just what I was looking for.:-)

Hi Jan, I'm having problems doing this. I've added the link for my post but the add to menu button is still dimmed. I've ticked the box for the menu I'm trying to add to but it's still dimmed.

Sorry Im late in responding. I've got family in town this week. On my edit menus page the add to menu button is not greyed out even when I'm not trying to add something.

RK, I took the liberty of looking at your site and it looks like it's very new. It has a nice look and you've got your pages set up well.

The first thing I would suggest is that you delete the first blog post titled "Hello World" and the tag line "Just another WordPress site" from your site title. These are just a space fillers that come with your theme so are not relevant to your niche.

Your theme it set up so that your blogs show up on your home page which is what you want. I can't really see any post you have yet that needs to be in a drop down menu for one of your pages.

The purpose of creating a drop down menu is to enable visitors to quickly find and access information in other locations on your site. If you look at my site, YourDog-BeastorBest.com, you will see that I have a page in my main menu titled "Product Reviews". I wrote two product reviews as posts which show up in the blog roll on my home page. I didn't want people to have to scroll thru all of my blogs to see which products I have reviewed so I needed to have links to them show up in a drop down menu when visitors click on the Product Reviews button.

If you still feel that you'd like to put one or more of your posts in a drop down menu, make sure you are in the edit menu screen. At the top there is a box asking you to select the menu you want to edit. You probably only have one and it's most likely titled "main menu". Make sure that is selected and then the rest of the instructions should work.

Let me know if you have any further problems.

Jan

Thank you very much for the constructive comments.

No problem. Any time. ☺

Thanks, Jan!

Brilliant, thanks. Had tried to do this, and thought I simply could not add posts to menu, so a great help :)

Lyndsey, glad you fou d this helpful

I did it in a bit different way, and it works fine too. On the appearence Menus, you selecte pages and posts, and then just need to drag the post you want under the page, and slightly to the right (to be a sub-item) and then save it. It worked for me!

Great to know! That sounds like it may be easier

Excellent - many thanks for that great tip Jan!

Lorna, Thanks for checking it out

Thank you for posting this Jan, it is good to keep your site organised.

I agree. It took me a while to figure it out so I hope this helps others out there
