I Got Hit With a Copyright Claim on YouTube

My First Copyright Claim

I'm sure bigger channels are used to this kind of thing by now, but this was my first flag. My first reaction was "is this going to hurt my video's presence in the algorithm?"

The answer to that, was no, I hope.

YouTube made sure that I knew this was a Copyright CLAIM and not a STRIKE. What the differences are, I am still not quite sure.

The little notification told me that the video wouldn't be eligible for monetization, and that a small ad might play during the video.

This wasn't a huge deal, because I am a long way from being able to monetize my channel. There was however, the option to dispute the claim.

The Dispute

I decided to dispute the claim, purely on principle. This video was a "Let's Play" featuring music and gameplay of a newly released video game.

However, the video also contains my unique commentary on the game, which is this kinda gray area and is sometimes considered fair use but other times it isn't.

Copyright laws are confusing guys.

Victory

Just 24 hours after filing my dispute to the claim, I received notice that the claim was released. Now, I know that this was all caused my an automated system incorrectly flagging my content, but this still felt good.

I'm glad I didn't just let it slide and choose to ignore the option to dispute the claim.
