You can have a com.au site hosted here, you just can’t register it here.
I have 2 x com.au sites hosted here, both are for businesses based in Australia or focused on an Australian niche.
It’s a personal choice though, and for me if it’s a worldwide niche I would get a dot com, and only use com.au for sites geared at the Aussie market.
Hey guys,
Am at the point of registering a domain and wanted to know peoples thoughts on having a Aus domain over a US one.
I live in Aus so it makes sense to have a .com
I’m in Australia too James and have gone with .com’s.
So far most of my (limited) traffic is coming from the US anyway, so I think .com is working fine.
You shouldn't have a problem transferring a .com.au to WA, I believe. As long as you're a premium member. Should ask support directly.
But I would be keen to hear people's input regarding .com vs regional domain addresses.

Hi James
The com is usually the best of the others as with the au is more regarded and focus most on the one country such as OZ
I am in Australia but chose to have from my domains the com
