I'm about to create a webpage and want to understand the process a little better. Thank you.

Hi Adolfo

I know some of the terms and language can be difficult to grasp until you become familiar with them. I will try and give you an understanding by using a physical store as an example.

Lets say you wanted to open a store in a big out of town shopping mall as they have a lot of people passing by. It would be very expensive to build you own mall. So instead you rent a space for your store from the mall company. Think of this mall company as your Host.

They have the space for your store and it has great big roads and highways leading to it so visitors can find you.
These roads and highways are like the internet.

You then open your store "Adolfo's Electrical" this is like your domain. But your store name has to be unique not the same as anyone elses
so to ensure this the name has to be bought and registered with a Domain Registry (like namecheap.com).

You then have shelves in your store to display your products. Think of these like your web page
Then on these shelves you have individual items. These are like articles, promotions etc.

Mall Company = Host
Roads, Highways = Internet
Store = Domain
Shelves = Web Pages
Individual products = Articles,Promotions

Internet companies share big directories listing domains.
These are known as Domain Name Servers (DNS) and so that people can find you and your store/Domain you need to tell your registry
where you are hosting or renting space for your domain. This is what we mean when we say pointing your domain to your servers.

You do this by altering the records at the domain registry to use the address given to you by your host company which could be at Wealthy Affiliates (WA) if you wanted.

If you make use of the Free websites here and don't buy your own domain name. Then this is like WA have a big super store and they are letting you use a corner of it to store your web site. You can give a name to your little corner but you can't rename WA's Superstore.

Think of it like this

WA's Superstore = siterubix.com
Your Website in the corner = adolofos.siterubix.com

In this example adolofos would be called a sub-domain

I hope this makes sense and I haven't confused you any more.

Dave

Thank you so much, Dave. Your examples really clarified it for me. I appreciate it.

Adolfo,

Have you started with your classes either here Choose a Niche or in the Affiliate BootCamp along the left side?

As you go along all will be explained, but in brief a general description would be;

A domain is a registered URL with an extension of .com, .net and so on, that is purchased through Namecheap or GoDaddy etc.

Once purchased it will be hosted where you bought it.

You may host your domain on servers here at WA or wherever so they have a place to call home by pointing your domain to the servers here .
You then working with WordPress or similar, build your website on the domain you purchased.
I hope this helps, my best,

Gary

Thank you for responding Gary. I am a premium member just starting the beginner's courses and am on the verge of setting up a website.

The domain is your internet name that you buy for your site,Its like property. The hosting service is who handles the domain ,they are kind of like a property manager. The website is on your domain being handled by the hosting service. You can own a domain and choose any host you want. Find a good hosting company. c
Companies like go daddy can offer you a package deal.or in the case of Wealthy affiliate you can host as many sites as you own and you can buy domains also through namecheap. for a very good price I would add.
I hope this helps a little. I have found the value of hosting at WA very good. it is good to have a host for every domain you own. but not necessary because you could use sub domains on your main domain ,but that's another story
Peace
Tom

Thank you for your response Alente. I am about to set up my first website, as a premium member, and part of that process is to name a domain. Since I am premium, "Do I have to pay WA for the domain name?" or go to Namecheap or Go Daddy before I can even set up my domain here in WA? It's kind of confusing?

WA only provides hosting for your sites (a place to store your content for others to view). It does not register domain names.

You'll need to purchase your unique domain name registration at a "domain name registrar" such as Namecheap, Godaddy, or any one of a number of others. (The cost on that should be around $10 or so per year.)

You do not need to purchase any hosting services from the registrar since you can host your sites here at WA as part of your premium membership.

Ok. Got it. Thank you for your help.
