Backlinking - a Necessary Evil

Hello all,

As I continue to build content for my websites and ad different monetizing links, the one thing I have to say that I enjoy the least is back linking. It's tedious and if I could hire someone to do it, I sure would! So, what do I mean by back linking? Here's my list of should do's:

1) Write articles and post to the top 10 article websites with links back to my various pages on my website.

2) Write for HubPages and monetize article.

3) Create a mini blog (5 posts with pics, monetize, include 2 links back to my main website and one to Wikipedia and a YouTube video).

4) Spend time commenting on other related blogs and leave links behind.

5) Spin articles and post with back links to articles I've written on the top 10 article directories.

6) Use Postrunner.

So, I have to be honest, I could probably spend a day on doing each of these for each of my sites but I don't yet. What are some other things you all do for back linking?

Just read your post and was wondering which lesson we get told to spin articles etc...I was pretty sure that I read earlier on in this course that this was a no no, or am I just imagining that, LOL?

I agree with you. In the 14 months I've been in WA I've seen numerous blog posts here on WA talking about creating backlinks. At the same time, I've read numerous posts, including one from Kyle, saying that backlinking is an old strategy and essentially useless.

I for one am totally confused by the topic of backlinking as to whether it has any value or not.

The backlinks I've created to this point come from my social media posts, which is what Kyle has stressed more than writing articles. Sure would love to be given a link to information from Google as to the need for backlinks in the form of articles, etc.

Hi Allyn well I am just glad I am not imagining it, because I like you just get backlinks from my social media also. Years ago I did another course that was all based on spinning and getting as much backlinks as you can and I never made one sale, now I am making them every day :)

Hi Allyn, I think there is more to it than just back linking social media. While we know we write good content and do all the other things that Carson and Kyle recommend but how to you take it to the next level. This is what I'm gong to research and share with everyone because it takes a little more effort I think.

Hi there, let me be clear. I am not recommending just spinning articles. I read of someone who is very successful spinning articles and referencing other articles NOT their websites. And this is a last step on a first step to advanced back linking.

Thanks Dwanna. If you are able to explain this a little more (as you learn about it) I think it would be very helpful. There seems to be a lot of disagreement among WA members as to how much of this should be done.

Right now, I'm lucky to get a post published once a week. I know that if I try to take on anything else, in addition to trying to build some social media presence, I'll once again flood myself just as I did when I tried to pay attention to everything on the WA site.

I'm not trying at all to dispute what you are saying. On the contrary, I really appreciate all that you've written about. In fact, I wish I had the capability to do what you are attempting to do.

I just feel a bit frustrated over this topic because I have seen so many blogs written on both sides of this topic. Do it, don't do it, do it, don't do it.

Keep learning and keep sharing what you learn!

Hi Allyn, I agree. I think the rules have changed a bit, no disagreement there. I finally did do some research and read a very interesting article by a man who did a 6 month long experiment around this and had interesting findings. His article is here: http://stream-seo.com/6-months-backlink-experiment/.

I'd be curious about your thoughts. I enjoyed his insight.

I read the article several days ago but forgot to get in here right away and give my comments. To be honest, he used a number of terms that I didn't understand, making it a bit harder to evaluate what he was saying.

The eight "things that worked" made sense mostly and some were quite helpful to my less-than-fully-enlightened brain. I did learn some good tips from those items and hope to do better on those counts.

Thanks for sharing the article.

Hi there, it's an advanced technique and it's spinning to have back links to your articles NOT your website ever . I have not done it but I know someone that has had extreme success with it.

To be honest at this point, I think doing some occasional back linking can only help but I don't spend a lot of time doing it, just when I have spare time.

I just post and whatever books I'm writing about I add the links on the same page. It may not be the best way but with so much to do it's the fastest way to get things done.

Love your post. It is quite tedious. As I try to tweet all my sites I find them to be tedious

Wow great stuff at the WA Universisty, and differing opinions Yowzer.

What way to go?

Marty::))

I know it's so tedious, so time consuming. I did not even consider spinning the ariches though. Great idea. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, Faith, I read of someone spinning articles and mentioning your other articles not your websites directly. Interesting tactic!

I'm going to look more into this topic and share what I find. I will, of course, look more on WA but I want to get a good list of effective ways to do this. I like some of the things on my list and did get it from a very reliable source but some of it seems so time intensive so let's see what else is out there!

I think you just created additional work for my administrator. My experience with back links have all been negative but you have a systematic method that I will shamelessly steal.

WA has some good video's on link building

Thanks, I will definitely check them out!

I wouldn't be creating mini blogs for backlinks. If Google finds out, you're going to get a major penalty.

I don't think I would do any of your do's.

The way I'd build links is through other blogs in my niche...naturally and "somewhat naturally."

Naturally would be doing nothing but writing epic content and wait for high rankings so people will link to me when they find my post on Google's first page. But that would take a while.

"Somewhat naturally" would be like writing epic content, promote it, build relationships with influencers and ask them for a link.

Another way would be to find a topic that's proven to be a success, make something better, and reach out to the people who linked to it and ask them to link to your (better) post.

You could also look for people linking to broken pages, write an epic piece (in that broken page's topic), and let them know.

Another way would be through blogs that publish link roundups... You'd write a nice post about a topic of their interest and then let them know about it.

Submitting to article directories and building a Private Blog Network isn't the way to build quality links. So I'd suggest you stop that if you've already started.

You should check out Brian Dean of Backlinko. He posts a lot of SEO and link building training through his blog for free.

Interesting feedback. I actually got that list from someone who is very successful at this. Content is great but it is important to go further than that. I appreciate your different insight but on some of this we may have to agree to disagree but I will look into this more on WA too. Thanks for your input.

Should we do all this stuff? What if we focus only on quality content, consistency and comments, is it not enough?

I think we need to take an extra step beyond great content. Link building is important but everyone does it differently as you can see from the responses. I'm going to research this more and see what I find out and adjust my list accordingly and then share it here.
