Defining Your Desire: The Starting Point for Success
Some of you who know me have discovered that I love the book Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. This book is my go-to to teach people about being in business: the mindset required to be successful.
Having the desire to be in business is great, but how does that help you become successful?
Business success, as in life, begins with a burning desire. In Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill identifies desire as the cornerstone of achievement. Without a clear and intense longing for success, ambition remains a fleeting dream. In this first article of my series, I’ll explore how to identify, define, and channel your desires into actionable goals.
What Is Desire?
Desire, as Hill explains, is more than just a wish. It is a definitive state of mind that drives you to achieve your goals no matter the obstacles. It’s not about idle daydreaming but about a purposeful yearning that sets you on a path of focused action.
Imagine a scenario where you want to build a successful business. It starts with an idea, but the idea alone isn’t enough. Desire transforms that idea into a mission, giving it the energy and momentum needed to bring it to life.
Clarify Your Desire
The first step toward success is gaining clarity about what you truly want. Vague desires lead to vague results. Ask yourself:
✅ What do I want to achieve?
✅ Why is this goal important to me?
✅ How will achieving this goal change my life?
Write down your answers and refine them until they’re specific and actionable. For example, instead of saying, “I want to be successful,” define what success looks like for you: “I want to build an online business that generates $120,000 annually within the next five years.”
Then, ask yourself why this goal is important to you. It can't just be about the money. There has to be a greater driving force to lead to the monetary success.
How will success change your life?
Turn Your Desire Into a Burning Obsession
Desire must evolve into an obsession to create lasting results. This doesn’t mean neglecting balance in your life but instead developing an unwavering commitment to your goals. Hill emphasizes the need for “persistence backed by faith” to overcome setbacks and challenges.
Here’s how you can ignite your burning desire:
Visualize Your Success: Picture yourself achieving your goal. Feel the emotions associated with your success. Visualization helps solidify your desire and trains your mind to work toward that reality.
Create a Statement of Desire: Write a concise statement detailing your goal, the timeline for achieving it, and what you’re willing to give in return. Read this statement aloud daily to reinforce your commitment.
Stay Inspired: Surround yourself with success stories, motivational content, and people who share your drive. Inspiration fuels desire and keeps you focused. That's where the WA community can help you out! Stay involved.
Aligning Desire with Action
Desire alone isn’t enough. Action bridges the gap between dreams and reality. Break your goal into smaller, manageable steps. Commit to daily actions that move you closer to your objective. Hill reminds us that “success requires no apologies, and failure permits no alibis.” Your results are the product of consistent effort.
Defining your desire is the first step toward achieving business success. It sets the foundation for everything else. You can unlock potential you never knew existed with clarity, conviction, and a burning passion.
In the next article, I’ll explore the role of faith and autosuggestion in turning your desires into a reality. Remember, success begins with a decision—and that decision starts with desire.

I like that you have to have a specific goal. Not something "airy fairy" but something rock solid you can hold, look at and know how to get there.
Napolean Hill, one of my faves.
Thanks
Steve
This is great. I am a Napoleon Hill fan and have used his system to build 4 successful businesses. My first was the desire to own a Dairy Queen. It took me 13 years to make that happen. Within 5 years I was able to take a low producing store to the 99th percentile in Dairy Queen mix sales world wide.
Great post Howard.
"Feel the emotions associated with your success. " This is super important to making it a reality.
I even published his book. :-)
