Back the 'F' UP!!!
Hey guys! Not sure if this should be a 'training' post or just a comment somewhere... But I learnt this the hard way today and want to share this with you guys to hopefully save you some time and effort!
As I was working on a new post today for my site, I wanted to ad a new photo. When I opened my media library, I saw I had A LOT of photo's and decided to delete some of them! BIG MISTAKE! Once I realized maybe it's a good idea to check with fellow WA'ers before deleting all my pics, I had already deleted most of my them! My heart stopped beating when I logged into WA and read that deleting photo's in your media file that you have used on your site, will also mess things up on your site...
When I clicked on the deleted photo's on my site, they would just give an empty 'photo not available' sign. Luckily, I had my photo's all backed up and could just load them back on and re-posted them on each of my pages and posts...
This took ages though, so PLEASE folks BACK THE FILES UP!! This little blooper also made me realize the importance of actually backing up your entire site! Follow my advice and back up each page and post you spent hours on! It will make things so much easier when you do need it later on for some reason! I recommend backing your files up in both formats (visual and text). This makes it a bit easier when you have affiliate banners etc in your pages!
Hope this saves you a bit of time! ;)

Great Free backup plug-in I use is UpdraftPlus. You can schedule automatic backups every day, as many times as you like and have it saved anywhere you like. You can save to dropbox, your computer, email, etc etc. It's free and automatic and definitely worth it for peace of mind!
Hojo, that sounds like a great plugin to have! Does it cost anything? Think it could be a very beneficial plugin for all sites!
Nope, it's free and has totally released the burden and pressure of worrying about saving things. Personally, I have it backed up to my dropbox, which I upgraded to have enough space, but i feel is worth it. However, there are options to back up at zero cost, such as having it sent to your e-mail. You can then create a folder in your email that has all your backups from each day. Mine backs up twice a day and like I said, it is one burden that is no more. It's an after-thought because I know I always have backups in case of emergency. All the best to you and again the plug-in is called UpdraftPlus and is totally free. Best of luck! Let me know how it works out for you!
Definitely! Backups are crucial and we all work WAY to hard to see all that hard work go down the tubes. It takes a major weight off my shoulder. The other thing to mention is that I believe you can even backup to multiple places. So, one of your scheduled backups will go to email and another to dropbox and you can even receive alerts via e-mail to know every time the site has been backed up. I set up these alerts for peace of mind and it has definitely helped. I had a MAJOR scare one time, too, which thank Goodness, I was able to recover through my old school manual backup method. However, I was lucky and realized I needed something more secure and definite set in place. All the best, bud!

Aurelien, with all that hard work gone into your 'investment' I'd say back that up asap :) I was pretty relieved I could save it!
Tommy, my mum always used to say 'if you don't listen then you gotta feel'... All sorted though but definitely backup up from now!
I've worked in IT for years and learned through others and some of my own mistakes that the 1st thing you do *before* you put something new in (or take something out) is to back up what you have, then put it in (or take it out), then back it up after you are satisfied you have done what you wanted to do.
Great post!
Thanks AdvMarktr! Yeah, the lesson here is do things THE RIGHT WAY!! ;) One of my golden rules now!

How frustrating! But at least it was easily fixable even though it was time consuming! :)
Phew, thanks Christa! Not too bad though (unlike the header of this blog suggests :) I've had bigger bloopers than this, but it's how we learn right!
Right!:)
