Thought I write about how to protect yourself against copy cats ( Plagiarism ).

I came across a number of people online recently that have had this issue. They spend hours, days, weeks on creating content only to find it being used elsewhere on the net. Can you imagine their frustration over their stolen material.

There are a few ways to prevent this

1. Disable right clicking

2. Search and use free online tools to identify plagiarism

3. Place a warning banner about copyrights on your website

If you do find that someone has copied your work you can send the content owners a DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) removal notice or to the ISP that is hosting that site.

This is becoming a real issue. I think I will do the copyright at the bottom of the page. Thanks for the info.

Oh yeah, I am most definitely following Beverley and @Rich. They are so knowledgeable and helpful

Thank you Richard, I am a newbie here so I really appreciate all the information and feedback from members like yourself. I am learning so much and attempting to place such information into practice. I feel so much more confident in WA when members point things out like you did. It just shows that members here are educated well in this field and know how to approach an issue in a number of ways and are willing to help rectify anything that needs it. Thank you for such valuable information and I am sure others will appreciate it as much as I do. ;)
I wish you & your family a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Hey Caroline. Unfortunately, if someone is determined to "steal" your content they will, ie. you can disable right-clicking but it doesn't stop screen-shots, ie. http://d.pr/i/mgZz with free tools like Droplr. You can certainly use services such as Copyscape http://copyscape.com and Tineye http://tineye.com to locate where else your content is appearing, and as you said file DMCAs, especially with Google http://d.pr/ip9o however it's hugely time consuming. I myself use DigiMarc http://d.pr/2kep and subscribe to a service that lets me file automated DCMAs but these are expensive solutions especially for newcomers. I think the most important thing is to ensure that you have Google Authorship in place so at least you're recognised as the originator and anyone who copies you has duplicate content. :) Rich.

I am starting to really understand the importance of Google authorship.

Hi Gordi, isn't it great. I didn't know anything about Google authorship until Richard's comment.Seems like the disable right clicking isn't such a helpful tool as I thought. So glad you came to this blog as read your earlier blog and some others which inspired me to put something out there and see the reaction about "Plagiarism". I hope you are following @RICH and BIS as they are just amazing. ;)
I hope this will help others with the same problem and I Wish you a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year.

Google Authorship is covered in the training. If you fancy killing three birds with one stone, then Craig's (@welshy) training on this is fantastic https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/how-to-set-up-google-authorship-verify-with-webmaster-tools-google-analytics :) R.

How do you disable right clicking?

@Rich, I found Welshy's video you suggested so helpful. That's the one I ued to set up my webmaster tools and Google analytics

Hi Caroline
You're right plagiarism can be a real issue and it's annoying when someone copies your work.

I wouldn't advise having a warning banner on every page of your website that could be over-kill and spoil the look of the site. Better to have a copyright statement on the site. And if you want to do more use the copyright symbol, the name of the particular page and your name at the very end of the document.
