The Easy Way To Setup All 3

In this video tutorial I'm going to show you how to complete 3 important steps that you'll need to complete once you've built a wordpress site. (well it's all optional but recommended)

If you already have a Gmail address and have set up a Google+ profile, you can complete the 3 steps in around 5 to 15 minutes. I recommend that you first watch the video from start to end, then start over pausing video as you follow along.

Can't see because the video is too small? All my videos are recorded in HD and will look fine in full screen mode.

1: Setting Up Google Authorship

Google authorship is all about telling Google who the author is that created the content or site. This is done by linking your content and your Google Plus profile together.

Setting up your authorship gives you many benefits and is also recommended.

In the first part of this video I'm going to show you step by step how to configure and setup authorship on your wordpress site.

2: Verify Site With Google Webmaster Tools

If you plan on ranking or being indexed in Google's search engine, it's important that you verify your site with Google Webmaster Tools. This will allow you to give Google details about your site, submit sitemap and much more, at the same time this will allow Google to communicate back with you, perhaps pointing out errors, bad backlinks etc.

In the second part of this video I'm going to show you how to verify your site with Webmaster Tools.

3: Connect Your Site With Google Analytics

Google Analytics is one of the best and most powerful tracking tools around and it's free to use. But to use Analytics will need to add some code so that tracking information is passed back to our Analytics account.

In the last part of this video I' m going to show you how to connect your site with your Analytics account, I'll also quickly show you how to then connect your Webmaster Tools account with your Analytics accounts.

After updating the plugin with your Analytics ID you may need to wait a few minutes for Analytics to work.

The Google Analytics layout has changed since I recorded the video above.

If you'd like to integrate Analytics and Webmaster tools please refer to the screenshot below.

What Do I Need?

To follow along you'll need the following:

  1. A wordpress site, preferably on your own domain.
  2. The All In One SEO plugin installed and enabled (if you've followed the courses at WA you should already have this installed)
  3. A Gmail address, this will allow you to create a Google+ profile, Webmaster Tools and Analytics account.
If you run into any problems or need help, please post a comment below and myself or someone else will reply.

Thank you so much for lesson for the google application. I do have a quick question regarding linking webmaster tools to google analytic. The latest version interface for google analytic is very different from the version in this video. I can't seem to find it. The closest to what I found was under
audience --> acquisition --> search controls --> queries

This is for search control integration. Wondering if this is the same as webmaster tools? or Is it located somewhere else?

thank you for your help!!!

Hi there I did the first two steps, but having trouble with the last step of the video when log into the Google Analytics site: in the video after signing into google analytics this is the screen I see (not the same one as the author of the video above- so I was unable to fill in all the data like in the video)

here is a screenshot of what I see when I sign into Google Analytics:

Can someone tell me where I go from the screenshot I posted below to plug in my website data?

perhaps I am confused because it looks like I already set this up, perhaps it was in one of Kyle's videos when we first set up my website as when I go into my SEO settings under my dashboard I see a code in my Google Analytics ID box:

Does this mean I am already set up with Google Analytics?
Reply

okay I will make sure that section is filled out, I'm just at a loss trying to find where he goes to 'universal analytics" 8 minutes (exactly) into the video

I think that code is just a placeholder. there should be no "#" in the number. U get your code from the admin area in Analytics.

Was not easy to follow the outdated video, BUT got it done with a lot of trial and errors in between following the video
BUT it is still helpful, thanks a mill!!

JUST ONE favor to ask:

Craig, Please could you update the training as the setup video is out of date.
It was not easy to follow the instructions on google+ and on analytics as the site layouts have changed since the video was created. I struggled to get through the steps with all the new page views on google+ and analytics, but eventually got it done!!

Your site has no hreflang tags.
Google uses hreflang tags to match the user's language preference to the right variation of your pages.

Doesn't that mean that somewhere something is indicating that you're targeting a foreign country?

I'm a wee bit lost @ step 2 around 4:13 in the video. Google webmaster was empty and asked me to "add a property". Once that was done, it gave me a "file" to download and said I neded to take that and "upload" it to my website. It's just a string of letters and numbers followed by .html . I have no idea how to "upload" this to my site. Do you know what it means when it says "upload"? Is there somewhere in the site that I have to copy and paste that string?

Thanx.
Angela

That usually means it's wanting you to FTP something up to your website's root, which really isn't necessary. Sounds like you're trying to verify your site by some means other than SEO.

First, I want to commend you on your systematic teaching method. It took quite a while to get through it all and I did have to stop every sentence or two to follow instructions. Some of the steps were tough to follow because the layout of Google has changed, but I was able to figure out most of it. In the end, I was able to do it and am quite grateful. I could never have figured it out on my own (or at least it would have taken much, much longer). Thank you.

Andrew, are you using All-In-One SEO or Yoast? In A-I-O the dashboard has a selection for XML Sitemap. Click on this and then click on "View your site map." You should see the content of the sitemap. If not, click on "Update sitemap" then re-verify with "View your sitemap."

In Yoast there is a section called "XML Sitemap." Here you can look at the sitemap by clicking "You can find your XML Sitemap here:" It should show the contents of the sitemap.

Then go to webmaster tools and enter the sitemap address manually and click verify. This will make sure google can find it. The re-enter the sitemap address and webmaster tools should show it as pending. It takes some time for google to process it.

When you click on the dashboard "Plugins" menu entry, one of the choices is "Installed Plugins". Click on that item.

Near the top of the list of installed plugins, you should see the entry for All in One SEO. If it's not there, you'll need to install the plugin by hitting the "Add New" button at the top of the page.

If the plugin is there, ensure that the last item in the listed options is "Deactivate". (That indicates that the plugin is currently activated.) If the menu option says "Activate", that indicates the plugin is deactivated. Click the "Activate" option to activate the plugin. At that point, it should appear in your wordpress dashboard menu.

Hi Apeng you should only have the analytics ID setup on the site you are actively tracking. So remove it on the old site and set it up on the new..

If you want to track both at the same time, you need another id for your new site, otherwise you have to remove it from the old one and just leave on the new.

Double check that you don't have the same code installed on two different sites! One analytics per website. You can completely delete the analytics tracking from the old site if you want, and start completely fresh if you are starting to mix up which code goes to which site.

Thank you for this very useful information!
I have verified my website with webmaster tool. Now it tells me to: "Make sure you add both "www" and "non-www" versions for your site. Also, if you use the HTTPS protocol, add those variations as well." so how do I verify www. version of my site? I tried to add it same way than the "non-www" version, leaving both codes ( separated with comma) but it didn't work out...
Can you or someone who knows help me!?
Reply
upsgirl Premium
Let me try. I verified both as well. Generally, once you have verified one version of the domain, Google can easily verify the other using the original verification method.
Reply
marianetlife Premium
so did you put both codes in the same line?
Reply
upsgirl Premium
No, I used the original verification process and entered both separately. Want me to find some training? Didn't you say you tried both at the same time?
Reply
marianetlife Premium
yes I tried both but it didn't work. Haven't tried separately because it says: "To stay verified, don't remove the meta tag, even after verification succeeds." So I was afraid that it won't work that way! But it does work for you then!?
Reply
upsgirl Premium
People have removed the meta tag, accidentally, and then had to verify the original way. Let me find something...
Reply
upsgirl Premium
From Google: "Simply add both versions of your site: as the www version is already added, you now have to add the non-www version. After you verify it, you will then be able to use the preferred domain option."
Google shows a lot of information, if you need clarification.
Reply
marianetlife Premium
My problem was that I thought those two codes were different...
After I tried to do it separately and did get it verified I was thinking that maybe it would be better to put the original code back and then there I noticed that those two codes are exactly the same!!
If I just checked that at the beginning... well I got still lot to learn :)

Just tried this, but Google Webmaster Tools' "Structured Data Testing Tool" appears to have changed completely. There's no Preview function, only HTML code analysis. Can you help?

There was a radical change to this tool since this training was done.

Good to know. I guess some of this training is rather dated. Maybe it should be moved to a 'Dated' folder or at least flagged somehow.

I certainly couldn't have done any of this without your step-by-step instructions. Thank you. I managed to get Analytics set up and received confirmation after entering my code in All-in-One-SEO. However, when I went onto my website to watch the real time results appear in Analytics, I got nothing. I logged on from another computer using an incognito page on Chrome, still nothing. I've been through the video several times and all my settings, and can't figure out why I'm not getting any results on Google Analytics. I've linked it with Webmaster Tools where my visits to the site have registered. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

When you added your domain to Analytics make sure it doesn;t have WWW. You can check the property settings. (i think that's' what it's called).

Thanks, I'll give that a try. The instructions on Analytics were to add all forms of the URL including www and http which I did. I'll delete all but the bare site name.

If you use WA hosting, it's not possible to have/use WWW. if you enter the www.domain into browser it will always redirect to domain.

So if you add WWW in analytics it's only going to track traffic that use www.domain, but as it redirects that means no traffic go to www.

Little confusing.

Tried that, welshy, but it didn't make a difference except it said it wasn't associated with any property. The http:// is automatically added.

In the Analytics page, it automatically adds http://. So the URL in Analytics then shows as http://domain name when I remove the www. When I check, it says that domain isn't connected to a property and I don't get any analytics data. However, I do get data in Webmaster Tools with the www.domain name. I'm sorry, but it is confusing. The Google tools are obviously setup for IT professionals. And the actual pages and process of configuring it has changed significantly since the video was made, although the video was a huge help and I thought I figured it out. Guess I'll just have to keep playing with it until I figure it out. Thanks.

Yes, things have changed, I created this video almost 2 years ago.

This is how it should look in the property setting. http://take.ms/GNz81

Under the Default View, the button says "All Web Site Data." When I click on the button a search box opens. I've added my site/property name to the search box but the All Web Site Data remains the default. I don't know how to change the button default to my property name.
