H2? What the Blazes is H2?

Knock, knock. Who's there? Yoast. Yoast who? Yoast better listen to me because you are missing your H2 tag.

Ok, maybe that wasn't funny but my Yoast SEO plug in was really giving me a hard time. The darned thing kept "screaming" at me to insert my H2 tag or it would withhold its certification that I had written a great SEO page.

"Hey Yoast," I said. "What" Yoast said? "What's an H2 tag" I asked? "I'm not gonna tell you," Yoast retorted. "Well why not," I inquired? "Because you are an idiot and you should already know all this, oh wise webmaster, lol" Yoast laughed.

Nothing worse than a stupid piece of software that laughs at you.

Ok, now I'm really ticked. I'm going to go on a tenacious quest to find the holy grail of H2. Sounds like Indiana Jones doesn't it?

Ever walked through a maze? Well, me neither but what I was attempting was a maze of inquiries and dead ends.

Like looking at a map, I search carefully all over the page editor for some button or link to put in something called H2. I instinctively decerned with my astute mind that H2 was a meta tag, duh. Nope, no H2 button or link. Shoot.

"Well," I thought to myself, "if H2 is a meta tag then let's click on the "text" tab in the page editor. Ah ha, I suddenly discovered a bunch of HTML code. Surely this must be the destination I was looking for, right? Wrong. I didn't see squat for where H2 may live. Shoot.

I scrolled down to the bottom of the page editor and spied upon some blank boxes called "custom field." There we go. Sounds like a place to put an H2 meta tag doesn't it? I saw a link which looked like it would sweep me away to WordPress land. There I could implore the wise sage within to give me their wisdom about custom fields. What a bunch of horse ... uh, gobble-die-gook. Don't ever ask the sage of WordPress to ever, ever talk to you or you will be very, very sorry you asked. Shoot.

Doh !!! "Why don't I just type in a question in the WA question dialog box," I asked myself. By this time I'm feeling a little psychotic because I'm sitting here talking to myself. Shoot.

Dummy me. I should have thought about asking the Wizards of WA all along. I typed my question and up popped a list of responses all related to H2. Hmmmm, I looked around the room and also peeked over my shoulder (well, peeked as best as one can sitting in a recliner) to see whether anyone could tell how stupid I was. I opened the treasure chest (clicked on the links if you don't get this part) and to my amazement there were the secret sword and shield to slay this dragon.

A wise old man, well, he looked kind of young in his profile picture, pronounced with great authority, "click on the paragraph button in the page editor." Yesssss, I had my answer and my quest was almost over which is good as I was getting hungry sitting in front of my computer.

So I ran (oh, come on folks, I returned to my page editor, I didn't actually run) with great speed back to my page editor. I excitedly gazed at the editor aaaaaand nothing. My editor must be broken because there was noooooooothing called "paragraph." So much for swords and shields. Shoot.

I stared at that page for the longest time. Somewhere is lurking a sneaky button called "paragraph." I stared and stared. Finally, I looked at a button I had never clicked on before. "Alright, let's click on the button," I said, unfortunately talking to myself again. I knew one of two things would happen. 1) Something good would happen if I clicked on that button or 2) my computer would explode.

In case you are a little slow right now, I'm typing this blog so, ahem, my computer did not explode.

Anyway, the very last button on the tool bar turned out to be a toggle button and magically (poof) a second tool bar came down. I'm sure you guessed by now but on the left was the button called "paragraph." Problem solved.

All kidding aside. H2 is a meta tag which is nothing more than your article subtitle. H1 is your post or page title. H2 is your subtitle. H1 is automatically inserted into the HTML code for you. You can insert H2 by clicking on "paragraph," then clicking on the H2 option.

I'm assuming you wrote a short subtitle at the top of your page or post before beginning to write your article, right? Well, put your cursor at the beginning of your subtitle and click. Now, go to "paragraph" and click on H2. You just created the illusive H2 meta tag.

Yoast is now very happy with you. Certification of a well written and SEO friendly page has been granted.

An enjoyable article and informing, lol!

now just write all your content like this and you'll get your followers! very entertaining! lol!

soo funny lol, enjoyed reading it

Enjoyed the chuckles - it was just what I needed this morning, teehee.

Loved it

There you go grandpamike, you finally found the elusive H2 lol! I thought I was reading a sherlock story or something hehe

So you finally found the kitchen sink :-) ~Marion

Well, I am not using Yoast, but your post was funny as hell to read so thanks for the chuckles! Gina

I laughed so hard when writing this post that I had tears running down my face.

You will be chasing tiny green dots for the rest of your webmaster life by using Yoast.

Just one little tip. If you try for 24 hours to get a green pimple on the "site title not in URL" and can't figure it out for the end of your life, rest in peace. That means you have a 'special character' in your title which is NOT shown in the URL (like a question mark) and smarty ass Yoast is not smart enough to consider this in his plugin and eliminate sleepless hours of chasing a little green dot from poor folks like you.

My secret tip: Just ignore the little blimp, whatever color, and concentrate on your content.

Just saying :-)

So what are you supposed to do with the purple dot?

Like I said, if you forget to put your main keyword phrase in at least ONE h2 or h3 tag, the reminder by Yoast is helpful. The "not in the URL" dingy is plain nuts.
Keyword density is misleading also. 1000 word post, maybe 3-4 times within the content, no more.
And it's all in Kyle's lessons, boomergp08's several blog posts.

And Yoast even doesn't monitor if your images are named in an seo helpful way. An image saved as image1 and inserted as such, for example, does not tell the crawlers what the image is about. So, give the image a related name (hint - another keyword/phrase and also enter some ALT TEXT.

Too many things involved for this comment section, but I hope you get what I am saying. Don't rely too much on Yoast. I use All In One SEO per course lessons, and 60% of my posts are on pages 1,2 and 3.
Good enough for me, because not every post can and will make it all the way to page one.

John

That very last button is called the "Kitchen Sink" - really! The other buttons give you control over everything (you guessed it) but the kitchen sink. Toggling that button adds a whole new row of controls to the editor.

Glad to see you've made up with Yoast and are back on speaking terms!

Dennis

I thought the last button was 'The Black Hole'.

You are right. I'm in the Twilight Zone !!!

Um, anyone who has a conversation with a piece of software is, well, certifiable.

Color me certifiable...

... but you knew that!

Dennis
