Why Don't You Play Anymore
Hello WA Rockstars,
I have three daughters and one on the way as most of you know. When you have daughters there's that one that becomes Daddy girl and for me that's Jessie my 7 year old rockstar. Now mind you all my daughters are rockstars. But Jessie wants to be at daddy's hip. As most of you know I have played the drums since I was 8 Yrs old.
When I got clean I put my drums away I had decided they triggered my addictions. Last night I heard my drums See I haven't told Jessie about my addictions. Jessie uncovered my set and was playing and wow she was keeping a rhythm. I came in and she looked up and said dad please teach me my wife was standing there and saw the pain in my eyes.
My wife came out to the living room as I was sitting on the couch and put her arm around me and said David it's time.

David, your story gave me tears and goose bumps. Maybe it is time to heal some more.

Hey David it sounds like you have some amazing women in your life. A wife that understands you and your pain and a daughter who sees only possibilities.
Mary
Wow that’s tough. On the one hand maybe you can reinvent the drums for yourself with a whole new experience. On the other hand is it really worth the risk?
David,
This post gave me goosebumps and almost put a tear in my eye. What effective story telling here. Jessie is lucky to have a Dad like you. She would be even luckier to bond with Dad even more through music.
I wish you nothing but the best in whatever you decide. I know you can do this!

I love this post and guess what if your Jessie has that rhythm. Then you are the right person to teach her.
I get Emelie she sounds so amazing a great wife and Mom. If em says it's time then David Its time. Why because you are all Rockstars and you are all amazing.
I love you awesome lot to bits I don't know any of you but feel like I know you all already.
Get them drums out for Jessie and for yourself. If Em says yes then it's a yes!
God bless you all your an amazing family:)
Your friend Debs:)
Oh Wow, that is a ghost you are going to have to deal with sooner than later. And play the drums again you have to look at a blessing that your daughter wants to learn the drums.
You have to try not to compare the pass with the present anymore. I know that is easy said than done actually you have to want to get over your ghosts for your daughter's sake.
I too had to get over ghosts it took time but I did it and I feel better for it. You have to a least try.
The funny thing is I have a set of drums that I don't know how to play but I am working on getting lessons I haven't found anyone yet but I am still looking.
Blessings

Its like me and motorcycles. I have two daugters. When the youngest was born I said no more riding for me. It is like Im someone else when I got onto my 1000 gsxr. Addicted to riding, alcohol and all kind of nonsence. Two children and also being girls changed my life. No more addictions for me. Now my first priority is my a children. One step at a time mate.

Hi David, I love that you shared this part of your life with us. Thank you!
Dealing with addictions is tough for sure.. Once you get your life right you get really, REALLY protective of keeping things from your past triggering bad memories and responses.
However the past...is BEHIND you now. YOU are not in the same place emotionally or physically as you were when your addictions ruled you. YOU OVERCAME IT. The fact that you kept your drums is a sign that not everything about that time was all bad.
Maybe just maybe you kept those drums for just a time like this. You have a child that wants to learn to play. Isn't it ironic she is about the same age you were when you began playing?
You have an AMAZING opportunity to teach your daughter a skill directly from you! Instead of letting your past drown out your musical future use it as a spring board to dive into something totally new with your daughter. Bonding over music is an amazing thing to share with a child. They NEVER forget it.
Your wife is right...Now is the time. Go for it! Please let us know how the drum lessons go. As a fellow musician, I'd love to see more female drummers!
