How to get paid for 90 days Instead of 24 hours Using your Amazon Affiliate Link

As an amazon affiliate when you send someone to Amazon using your affiliate link you get paid for anything that person buys on Amazon for the next 24 hours. Even if they don't purchase the product you sent them there for.

But did you know...

You Can Get Paid for 90 Days

Amazon uses what is called a cookie. Cookies are stored by your browser when you go to a site that sets them. Amazon sets a cookie on your customers web-browser when they use your amazon link to go to enter Amazon.com

However, there is a special link that automatically adds the product to someone's Amazon cart when they go through your affiliate link. When you use this link Amazon will lengthen your cookie to 90 days!

If they buy anything for 90 days you get the commission!

The Good Comes with the Bad

The bad thing is that from an usability standpoint this doesn't work really quite like you would like.

Here is a video that gives a good alternative that offers good usability and the add to cart link.

Hey Glen, I liked your post. I do have a couple of questions, is it really possible to get paid over a 90 day period with Amazon doing what you suggested; what are the steps to doing that?

Second, how is it possible that we're still getting paid from Amazon even though people aren't buying the product; I always understood it that we only get paid from Amazon if someone buy a product from us and we earn from the commission, can you clarify that?

Hi Rodney,

As an affiliate of Amazon. You get paid a commission of any product that someone buys when they go to Amazon for the next 12 hours. Not just the product you promote but any product.

The 90 day cookie is using the add to cart feature. I gave a link to the video on how to do it in the post. While this method might work you need to find the perfect way or time to off this type of link.

In the video it shows providing both the standard and add to cart links.

The problem with the add to cart link is that it doesn't allow you to see any specifics about the product. So in some cases it might not be a good way to market. However if you offer both links one that says See the Details of the product and I'm Ready add to the cart now. You have both covered.

Hope this helps,
- Glen B

Thanks so much for this. The video doesn't really tell you how and where to insert the link. I find the video confusing as she doesn't explain what type of link to insert.
Can you clarify this for me please Glen.
Thanks
Janet

Hi Janet,

I'm probably not the one to give you instructions on this as I don't really use Amazon. So other than the info I passed along someone else might be able to comment on this.

Basically, I wouldn't use it unless you can find a creative way to allow someone to use that particular link.

The benefit would be setting a cookie for 90 days so that you could get paid on anything purchased for that period of time.

Will check this video out later. I don't actually gave my links going straight to the cart. It goes to the product first. I thought this was normal. Am I doing something wrong? Jim

No Jim, Most go to the product first. This is just an alternative method that one could use. You don't have to.

If one could find a creative way to use that type of link it would offer more profit from those who buy in a 90 day window.

Thanks. Sounds interesting. I was confused about what happens at checkout, but it sounded like the customer may leave the amazon site completely. It’s definitely worth checking out.

John,

It is worth checking out. I"m not sure how practical it is. If one can find a good way to use it then it would offer a longer cookie.

Thanks for the insight and sharing. Gonna have to come back to your post and absorb it without distraction.

Thanks Michael,

This is a strategy that you would test but not use as your main one to start.

Hmm... Yes, Good & Bad. It's a shame she didn't report on her test but her suggestion seems reasonable. I'll probably wait until someone has tested it :-)
Ian

It would be an interesting test Ian.

I'm just starting my site and no traffic to speak of so I can't do it :-( otherwise I would.

We need a brave soul with traffic to step up to the plate :-)

I'm going to copy this across to @Zarina and see what she thinks.
Ian

Sounds Good Ian!

Personally, I wouldn't like to be directed to put something in my cart before even checking the product out. So as much as I'd like a 90 day cookie, I don't think I'll be using it!

Janelle

I agree with you Janelle, but the included video I included gives a good alternative that allows them to see the product or just checkout if they like.

- Glen B

True, but just speaking as someone who shops on Amazon all the time, I want to go straight to the product. I think I'd still be turned off if I have to take extra steps to view what I'm looking for.

If you or anyone else tries it and has good results, please update. I'd absolutely love to find out I'm in the minority on this one! :)
