Coping with depression

Well here we are, on the verge of a new year, and as far as I'm concerned I'm very glad to see the end of 2016. I wouldn't say it was a disaster, but it definitely wasn't a year to remember. I lost my job, and my depression kicked back earlier in the year, had some issues with my girlfriend and her funny relationship with another person. Gosh I just want this year to end right now.

So how do I did I get into this mess? Well I ran up a few bills, nothing major, but serious at the time. Please, if you are reading this, don't try to please others at your expense. That's point number 1! Be selfish, and invest in yourself, hence why I've enrolled in Wealthy Affiliates and I plan to exploit the opportunities that WA provides.

I got some work in, have had a few job offers, but my heart is not in Optometry anymore. The way that society is going in the UK means I'm not suited to being an optometrist any longer. There is no point doing something you are not committed to fully. Commit or resign- Point Number 2.

I coach rugby union to youths at a small club on the outskirts of Norwich, Norfolk, UK. Their level of ability at the start of the season was poor, but we won our last game. It was their first ever victory, and so the seeds of success have been sown for them and their parents. Coaching is my release from the boredom I would normally be under of an evening or at the weekends. Seeing young men tackle properly, run and pass the ball, and support each other on & off the pitch is very rewarding.

I also help out with a development squad, and I'm the regional manager for a branch of the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU). We are known as The Irish Exiles, and seeing potential international quality players coming from your area gives me a sense of great satisfaction. Point Number 3- Do what you like doing, and the rewards are there to be had.

Exercise, fresh air and sunshine also help me greatly. I'm sure I have some S.A.D qualities, so sunlight and sunshine helps me greatly. I have worked in a dark room most of my life, and this obviously has not helped me. Walking, running are simple exercises that will allow you to get out there and take in the great outdoors.

So there you have it, these are some ideas to get you up and "running" when trying to cope with depression. There is no overnight cure, no magic tablet or pill to reduce the "black dog". Talking and sharing with others is also very beneficial to your well being and progress. Just sitting on your ass and doing nothing will only bring further bouts of anxiety.

Have a great 2017 people. And reach out, even contact me if you just want someone to talk to. I'm very happy to listen.

That is the key - MOVEMENT!!!!

Movement- both mentally and physically Paul. Time to move on, in a lot of aspects.
Francis.

2016 was not a year I'd like to remember, with the exception of joining WA. that's pretty much my only highlight of the year.

Some years hit us harder than others. I'm glad that 2016 is over.
I wish you well. Francis.

Hello Francis, thanks for sharing and now you can begin to put "2016" in the past and start new in "2017" and focus on the positive in your life and leave the negative behind you. It seems you are on your way to a Great Year. Happy New Year, Francis :)

Hi Carol. Yes, time to move on from the old, and move on with the new.
I hope NJ is not too cold this year.
Francis.

2016 has been an absolutely nightmare for me and I can't wait to see the end of it. My family was hit with a lot of bad health issues including myself just last week when I put my back out.

I suffer from both depression and anxiety, it can get quite severe and affects my ability to function from day to day. I hope 2017 brings better things for you and lots of online success, life in the UK isn't as pleasant as it used to be unfortunately.

I truly hope that you can move on. Telling someone to get better from Anxiety & depression is like trying to catch rain with a sieve. It just won't happen.
Jay, I can only wish you well in your physical and mental recovery. The back will get better,. As can the mind. Together we can get better.

Thanks a lot Francis, have a great year. the only way is up for us now :)

The only way is up Jay, and that is down to us alone!

Thats right, if you ever need to talk feel free to message me :)

Likewise Jay :)

I live the way you can extract positivity out of negativity. This shows how a strong man you are. I'm sure you are going to venture in the new year with bravity and new strength to continue.

Cheers

Paul.

We can all get positive points from a negative situation. You either sink or swim, and I have my fins on.
I'm going to work hard at making 2017 the best it can be.
Francis.

Nice article, at this time of the year and the beginning of a new year it is a great time too but this in the right order. So thank you for sharing your advise.

Thank you. I thought it a bit of a ramble, but I guess subconsciously I would have had it planned.
But thank you anyway.
Francis.

Thanks for sharing your story Francis, may 2017 be your year of happiness, growth and prosperity. #RugbyLover

Thanks Gaylene. 2017 is the time to shine!

I love your positivity! You will get through this for sure. On my website I wrote an article how to deal with depression and anxiety during holidays, it also talks of nature, exercise and fresh air as keys to get better :-)

Great minds think alike then. I try to use K.I.S.S. As much as possible- Keep It Simple (Stupid- the stupid being me!)
the holiday season can be a depressing place. Never understood that until about 15 years ago.
Many thanks for your kind words, Francis.

Watch out on NYE. Alcohol is a depressant!

I'm not a big drinker, but I'm always wary of the demons of drinking alcohol. I will enjoy a few glasses of Prosecco and Champagne however.

Keep going, Francis! Have a great 2017! It's great to have this kind of attitude!

Thanks Reanna. I could have shared more, but it's personal and somewhat of a conundrum that is causing me grief, but that's for another day.
I do appreciate your words and support Reanna. Thank you.
Francis
