Hi WA Friends!

Time to take a fun break from your workday! I have a question for you to ponder.

Rock music is known for its powerful sounds, but what makes it truly special? Is it the electrifying guitar solos and riffs, the pounding beat of the drums, the deep groove of the bass, or the rich layers of the keyboards? Maybe it’s the combination of all these instruments that gives rock its soul.

Anyone here who knows me can easily guess which instrument I prefer!

Guitar: The Star of the Show

Jimi Hendrix onstage

Let's be real β€” when someone says "rock music," you probably picture a guitarist shredding on an electric guitar, making history. Whether it's Jimi Hendrix setting his guitar on fire or Slash playing "Sweet Child O' Mine," the guitar always finds a way to steal the spotlight. The riffs and solos bring that raw energy that makes rock feel rebellious. It’s the crunchy sound of power chords that makes rock concerts unforgettable and inspires so many kids to pick up their first guitar, dreaming of being the next legend.

It happened to me in middle school. I heard the song "Fire" from the Jimi Hendrix "Are You Experienced" album on the radio. I bought a Sears electric guitar and eventually had Fender make me a Stratocaster guitar in Olympic white with a rosewood neck, just like the one in his "Electric Ladyland" album. My mother, who was a professional seamstress by trade, made me the jacket to match!

Hendrix - From the Electric Ladyland album

The guitar is super versatile, too. From bluesy melodies to heavy metal chugging, it can create different moods and styles. It’s hard to imagine famous rock songs without those signature riffs β€” think "Smoke on the Water" or "Back in Black." The guitar isn't just an instrument; it's a symbol of rock!

Drums: The Driving Force

John Bonham of Led Zeppelin

What’s a rock song without the beat that gets heads banging and feet moving? The drums are the backbone of every rock band. Without that driving beat, the music just wouldn’t have the same power. It’s the drums that build tension, set the groove, and deliver those crashing moments that make the crowd go wild!

Think of John Bonham from Led Zeppelin or Keith Moon of The Who β€” their drumming didn’t just keep time; it made their bands stand out. The drums bring a raw, powerful energy that is at the heart of what rock is all about: freedom, chaos, and adrenaline. The drummer’s energy is what turns a song into a full-blown rock experience and gets the crowd jumping!

I remember seeing John Bonham at Zeppelin concerts. He was one of the first (if not the first) to use double bass drums and taped two drumsticks together to make a "super stick" for each hand to make his sound louder!

Bass: The Unsung Hero

Geezer Butler - Black Sabbath

While the spotlight usually shines on the guitar and drums, let’s not forget the unsung hero of rock β€” the bass. Bass players might not always get the attention, but they’re the ones who hold down the bottom end, connecting the drums and guitars into one solid sound. A great bassline can add a groove that makes it impossible not to move. Just ask Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers or John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin.

When I first heard Geezer Butler play bass in Black Sabbath, I was super impressed! He was playing guitar lead lines on his bass guitar that meshed perfectly with Tony Iommi's riffs!

The bass gives rock its groove and depth. It fills out the sound, making it feel complete and powerful. When you listen to songs like "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen or "Money" by Pink Floyd, it’s the bassline that hooks you and keeps you grooving. The bass might not always stand out, but its impact is huge!

Keyboards: The Secret Weapon

Jon Lord - Deep Purple

And then there's the keyboard. It might not be as common in rock bands as the guitar, but it's been super important in shaping the sound of bands like Deep Purple and The Doors. Keyboards can add a richness to the music that fills in the gaps, adding layers that make a song even better. Just listen to "Baba O'Riley" by The Who β€” that famous intro wouldn't be the same without the keyboards.

Keyboards add versatility and depth to rock music, providing melodies and harmonies that can transform a song. From the haunting organ in "Light My Fire" by The Doors to the epic synths sounds of Richard Wright in Pink Floyd, keyboards have helped create some of the most memorable moments in rock history. They bring a special character that makes the music more emotional and powerful!

The Heart of Rock: Your Opinion Counts!

Different instruments bring different flavors to rock, and each one can steal the show, depending on the song! Whether it’s the amazing guitar solo, the powerful drum beat, the groovy bass line, or the cool keyboard melody, every instrument has its time to shine!

So, what do you think? Which instrument really defines rock for you?

Do you love the epic guitar solos? Or do the drums make your heart race and your head bang?

Maybe it's the bass that makes your feet move, or the keyboards that add that special touch.

Cast your vote, and we'll see what others think. For me, it's the guitar, all the way, baby! Lol πŸ˜†

Hi Frank

Wow, this is a tough one! I can't pick just one as I believe they are all as important as the next. Vocals, in my opinion, are of equal importance as well.

But I think it depends on the song and maybe even the band.
For instance, pretty much any song from Rush has a heavy presence of extrordinary bass and drums. 🎸πŸ₯
Songs like Smokin by Boston has awesome keyboards in it. 🎹
And of course anything from Van Halen will have the spectacular Eddie guitar solos. 🎸🎸
But the common factor in all of these and many more is great vocals along side the incredible instruments. πŸŽ™

Ultimately, I don't think there is one instrument that I could pick to be considered the most important in a rock band. 🎢🎡

Thanks for this post, Frank! I could go on for hours with this one, but I will cut it short! 🀣🀣

Keep Rockin!! 😎🀘🎸😎🀘🎸

Tim 🎼

Hi Tim

I agree with all of what you said!πŸ‘πŸ‘

I'll admit that I'm biased toward the guitar since I'm constantly trying to learn how to play it better, so most of the time, it's my laser focus. Hahaha πŸ˜‚

You named some great bands, but how about predominantly instrumental rock and metal bands like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, and Yngwie Malmsteen? Do you enjoy them as much as bands that write songs that revolve around lyrics? 😎

Rock On! 🀘
Frank 🎸

Hi Frank

I do enjoy all who you mentioned. Steve Vai actually ranks in my top 3 guitar players of all time. And Joe is in my top 5. Eric Johnson is awesome as well and what can you say about Yngwie, just wow! I saw Dream Theater live and Joe Petrucci blew my mind!

But I'll have to admit that vocals, especially harmonies, always draw me in first! Check out the beginning vocals on this tune:

Our acoustic band does a lot of Eagles, America, and even some Queen.

Of course this is only my opinion!

Keep Rockin!! 🎸😎🀘

Tim 🎼

Hi Tim

Great video! I love the vocal harmonies and the way the guitars play around the melody of the song with the typical ’80s big hair pentatonic runs.

Looks like Jackson guitars, although hard to see, probably played through Marshall JCM 800 amps. 😎

Rock On! 🀘

Great question, Frank, and I'm still undecided as to which single instrument is the one that defines, Rock!

My first instrument was a guitar, and I would imagine myself playing on stage somewhere....but I was too shy, (go figure, lol).

Although I did play once, at age 17, at an open Mike, after some encouragement from my friend who played the local circuit.

Rock is an ensemble, each instrument brings their own energy, uniquely defined by the player, as you've mentioned here.

But you can't have Rock music without the guitar!

Rudy

Hi Rockin' Rudy! πŸ˜ƒ

I would have predicted you'd say drums, but each instrument does help define the total sound.

For me, there's no contest: guitar - all the way! Hahaha 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸

Keep On Rockin' It! 🀘πŸ₯
Frank 🎸

Drums help keep the rhythm...the tempo...

'Dust in the Wind', by Kansas, has no discernable drum action, yet the rhythm flows.

Guitar was my first love, tho...

I didn't start playing the drums until I was 60....grin..

Oh, I knew some drummers, and learned a couple routines, although, one band politely hid the sticks so I would stop...uh-uh.... pencils worked just as well..lol...using the eraser end...

Rudy

Drummers make excellent guitar players because they understand how to lock onto the rhythm and play in the pocket!

Both instruments are awesome, each in their own way! 😎

Frank 🎸

No doubting that the guitar is the top of your list Frank!!

But personally.... what is a great rock band without their trusty triangle!!

πŸ€£πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ˜ŽπŸŽΈ

Hahaha, Nick. 🀣

Frank Zappa used the triangle quite a bit in his music and always had a percussionist onstage in addition to a drummer. 😎

Frank 🀘🎸

Great to hear Frank! It's the only instrument I managed to master back in the day!!

Rock On!

πŸ€£πŸ»πŸ‘πŸŽΈπŸ˜Ž

Every instrument is awesome in its own way, Nick! 🎢😎

Frank 🀘🎸

You're not wrong there Frank!

πŸ‘πŸ€£πŸŽΈπŸ˜ŽπŸ»

πŸ‘πŸ˜ŽπŸ»

πŸ˜ŽπŸ»πŸ‘

Frank, of course, you know my answer to this question, right? Yes πŸ₯! Best sound of rock and 🎸 too. Louder and louder is the way I like it! John with Zepplin geat drummer! πŸ₯ Drumming is easy to learn for us Deafies because of vibration sounds. I love it! Also the electric guitar, long jamming is my best sound. Keyboard is ok-kind of hard to hear it. Play it louder for me! I wish to see you on video playing your guitar. I do! Do you have a way to include drumming in your acoustic sounds? Find a a way to do video, we want to hear you rock and roll 🀘🏻 it louder and louder like Beethhoven’s Nightmare, our Deaf groupie Rock and Roll Band!

Yup, absolutely predictable, Brenda, and drums really Rock! πŸ₯πŸ₯πŸ₯πŸ₯πŸ₯

You should get another drum set if you don't have one. Your assisted living residents and workers will just have to get over it! Hahaha πŸ˜ƒ

I have a few acoustic guitars and I really should play them more often. They are too big to play in front of my laptop while I'm on the couch watching WA classes. I can't reach the keyboard. Lol πŸ˜†

I might do some YouTube Shorts or TikTok videos on guitar riffs for beginners, but no long jams. I'll let you know. I have about a zillion different drum loops on apps like GarageBand. 😎

Rock On! 🀘πŸ₯
Frank 🎸

Hi Brenda

The stuff I'm playing now is very technical, not very expressive. It's more like mathematical patterns and series in scales and arpeggios. I just can't help myself; math always seems to find a way to creep in. Lol πŸ˜‚

Speaking of creep, we've been watching the Jeepers Creepers series for Halloween month. We saw the first and third one. JC III is really the second movie, chronologically. Tonight, we'll see the movie actually named JC II. Then the fourth one is called JC Reborn. πŸ‘»

Frank 🀘🎸

Let's not forget the importance of a great vocal! For me, the vocal that Paul McCartney gives really adds an extra dimension to a song like "Things We Said Today", off the Hard Day's Night album. Another example of a great vocal, is Robin Zander's rendition of "The Flame", off of Cheap Trick's Lap of Luxury album.

Hi Jon

You're absolutely correct! πŸ‘πŸ‘

I tend to listen to more all-instrumental music, but vocals can really make or break a song!

George Benson is an example of someone who is a fabulous guitar player with vocals that absolutely push his tunes to the next level!

And how about Barbra Streisand and Celine Dion!? Wow! 🀩

Frank 🎸

Yeah, outstanding tunes, Brenda, by two amazing singers!

Your skits sound like great fun! Excellent school & I love D.C., but way too humid in the summer! 😎

Frank 🎸

You, too, Brenda! 🀘πŸ₯πŸ€˜
