Hi WA Friends!

Just a quick post to talk about the eclipse yesterday. I should have posted this ahead of time to give others fun ideas, but I was too busy with other more pressing matters, so sorry about that.

What Is A Solar Eclipse?

Anyway, here in the United States, we had a total solar eclipse, which is very simply where the moon totally blots out the sun except for the radiation that can be seen around its edges, sometimes called the corona, which is actually the outermost part of the sun's atmosphere that is usually hidden by the bright light of the sun's surface.

Why Partial Is Better Than Nothing

Where I live in Rhode Island, we had a 90% "partial" eclipse, but it was still enough to plan a little commemorative get-together with family and friends; that's just how Italians are. Lol

I can't remember the last time I witnessed a solar eclipse, perhaps when I was in high school or college. I guess I was too busy with graduate studies or medical school to participate. Who knows??

Anyway, the next total solar eclipse in America isn't for another 20 years, so I'd be almost 90 years old or dead by then! Lol 😎

The Viewing, Food, and Refreshments

The eclipse began at about 2:30 PM, peaked at 90% at 3:30, and ended at about 4:30. We bought 30 pairs of ISO-certified eclipse glasses and passed them out to guests as they started arriving. Many of them missed the viewing and the barbecue due to work responsibilities but came later for the remainder of the festivities.

We had hotdogs, hamburgers, steak sandwiches, and a variety of refreshments. I almost missed the beginning of the eclipse, stuffing my face with a hamburger on the grill and fries! Haha

I also tried a Singapore Sling, at Nick's (Jessiefido) suggestion, or at least a few sips of one. Wow, are you kidding me, Nick? Delicious, but way too strong for an alcohol wimp like me! Lol 🤣 😂

The Entertainment

Sir Brian May, Ph.D.

We began the entertainment by watching a brief SKY News clip from Brian May, the astrophysicist and guitar player for Queen, showing time-lapse footage of the total eclipse from Mexico.

Queen

In honor of Brian and Queen, we viewed the "Hungarian Rhapsody: Live In Budapest" concert on Blu-ray. If you've never seen it, it's one of the best Queen performances!

Here is the track list (from Wikipedia):

  1. "One Vision" (Queen)
  2. "Tie Your Mother Down" (Brian May)
  3. "In the Lap of the Gods... Revisited" (Freddie Mercury)

  • Extras
    • A Magic Year Documentary (DVD and Blu-ray only)

Pink Floyd

No eclipse is complete without watching a Pink Floyd concert that includes all the songs from their album "Dark Side Of The Moon!" They play every song on their concert Blu-ray "Pulse," as well as other all-time favorites.

It's a must-see for any Pink Floyd fan!

Here is the track list for Pulse (from Wikipedia):

Do you live in an area where you were able to see the solar eclipse? Of course, you can watch it on YouTube, in case you missed out.

Did you see the partial or total eclipse, and what did you do to make it fun?

Let me know in the comments, AND ...

Hello! I saw the eclipse where I'm at and it clouded up. My sister brought those glasses and I was able to see most of the eclipse with those glasses. I'm glad she brought them because the other 2 pair of sun glasses were ok, but those worked much better. I did see that queen concert I had on a disk a few years ago and that was a very good concert. I saw Pink Floyd at Syracuse years ago and it was an awesome concert.

That’s one of Queen’s best shows, in my opinion, and there’s nothing like a Pink Floyd concert. A recorded Floyd show just doesn’t do them justice! 😎

Where I am in Arkansas we had 99.8% coverage and could have gone just 30 miles west to get 100%. However, at 74 and having already witnessed a couple of eclipses, this one didn't hold a great deal of interest for me.
I guess for someone who has never seen one it is a big deal (as it was when I saw the one in '74). Anyway, I'm glad it was enjoyed by so many people.
Dan

Hi Dan

Yeah, it's quite an astronomical phenomenon from the point of reference of our solar system, although it's an insignificant part of what continually happens in our universe.

It was the first total solar eclipse I had the opportunity to witness at my leisure, so I tried to make it a fun time for all our guests, and it turned out pretty well. 😎

Frank 🎸

Sounds like a fun time was had by all. Mr Nick is leading you into temptation is he, lol, with a Singapore sling or three. Very strong they are , but perfect for eclipses. We did not get a showing in Vietnam, but we could have provided the Rượu 🥃 or wine. For example Snake or Scorpion wine ( good for man’s strength, lol, so it is said) Truth be told, it is probably safer to be bitten by either the snake or scorpion…lol.
Good to see you had an excellent array of musicale entertainment.
Anyway….gotta go…I have a blog to bash out and cooking to be done.
Have a great day.
Stevoi

Holy crap, Steve! I’ll take my chances with the Singapore Sling any day! 😳😬😬😬

Yeah it was a great day & evening of astronomical fun for all involved. 😎

Rock On! 🤘

I live in WA state....we had cloudy skies...lol..no surprise!

I did drive to Lincoln City, OR in 2017 to see the last full solar eclipse. I photographed the event, and burned iut my cell phone in the process, too. A couple of months later, it just died...

It was eerie that during the middle of the day, as it got darker, the environment changed.

The night time lights turned on, the birds got quiet, and a light mist covered the ground as the fog came in.

Lasted a long time in total derkness, 20 min or so.

Hi Rudy

Yeah, it’s a very cool experience, for sure! 👍😎

Hi Frank,
My area of Ontario, Canada was at 99% totality.
It was really cloudy out, but it was still very cool to see.
Many people mentioned the temperature drop, but I was wearing a coat so didn’t really notice.
I witnessed a partial eclipse in 2017 which was a great experience as well.
Sounds like you had great time!
Jenny.

Hi Jenny

You rocked the eclipse in spite of the weather! 👍👍

I noticed a small temperature drop, too!

Yeah, we had a great time! Life is short so we need to have fun whenever possible. Lol 😎

Hey Frank!

We had 95% coverage here in Michigan. A few of my office staff went in and out with the glasses to check it out for a few hours. The peak for us was at 3:15. It was pretty cool! I did see one years ago, but don't remember exactly what year.

Queen....good choice for sure! Brian May is another one of my favorites and Freddy was one of the best front men EVER!

And Pink Floyd...another solid choice! And "Dark Side of the Moon", a fitting choice!

Thanks for sharing, Frank! Rock on!! 🎸🎸

Tim 🎼

Hi Tim

Glad you got to check out the eclipse! 👍👍

Yeah, I choose Queen because Brian May is an astrophysicist with a Ph.D. In that area, but I agree that they are one of the best bands ever!

Brain built his original “Red Special” guitar from scratch and used a 100-year old piece of wood from a fireplace mantel to make the neck!

Dark Side Of The Moon + eclipse was a “no-brainer,” not to mention that it is a total masterpiece of a fabulous album, from start to finish!

Rock On! 🤘

Way to go, mixing some classic rock 🎶 with the eclipse😎 !! Great thinking!

I love the Italian ways! My late wife was Italian and I am still in contact with her family regularly! Great people!

Keep Rockin it, Frank! 🎸🎸🎸

Tim 🎼

Haha, Thanks, Tim! 🙏

Yeah, I totally love the Italian lifestyle! 😎😎💯‼️

Rock On! 🤘

Hi Frank! Glad to hear you enjoyed the festivities yesterday. I was in the 99 zone but it was cloudy until just after the best of it. Fortunately , I saw the same footage from Mexico that you did.

The squirrels here were racing like mad up and down the trees and the chickadees were chirping excitedly. A robin sat upon the rooftop wondering why it looked so dark out. Funny how the animals know.

The last one in ‘17, I was in the 100 zone in TN and it was a fun party time for all. It’s quite a humbling experience. The universe is amazing.

The Sling is quite a drink! Sounds like a fab party. Nicely done. 👍🏻😎

Rock On,
Susan 🎸🤘🌖☀️

Thanks, Susan! 😎

Too bad you didn’t have clearer skies, but thank goodness for online video, right?

I think we might have had an eclipse visible in 2017, but I didn’t get to see it.

Yeah, the universe is amazing!

Haha, having fun is my superpower, but the sling got the best of me! Lol
🤣😂

Rock On! 🤘
Frank 🎸

It is handy to be able to see these things at our convenience indeed, Frank! In this case, it's may be safer too lol. Science and all things universe will always be awesome!

Fun is definitely your middle name...glad you had a great day. The slings are cosmically powerful and go down a little too smoothly haha. 😂🤣

Have a great evening,
Susan 👍🎸

Hi Susan

Yeah, there are always cases of “solar retinopathy” in those who view a partial solar eclipse for a prolonged period of time on a day with minimal cloud cover without protective glasses.

Most cases are temporary but some cause permanent visual problems.

Now that the proper glasses are easily obtainable online we’re seeing less instances.

I try to stay away from cocktails because they all go down a “little too smoothly!” Lol

I’m more apt to slowly sip on wine or beer.

My wife and I were on this cruise and after one drink at the martini bar I had to go back to our room to lay down! Haha - NOT a drinker!🤣
