Rolling Stone's 250 Greatest Guitarists!
Hi WA Friends
I just finished reviewing the Rolling Stone Magazine''s Oct 13, 2023 list of "The 250 Greatest Guitarists of All Time." 1Rudy1 (Thanks, Rudy!) PM'ed it to me. I read it carefully every time it comes out, and I'm always somewhat baffled as to the order.
How The List Was Created
Here' what Bard has to say:
The Rolling Stone Magazine list of the 250 greatest guitarists of all time was created by a panel of over 200 experts, including musicians, journalists, and producers. The panel was asked to consider a variety of factors, including technical skill, influence, and innovation, when making their selections.
The list was compiled over a period of several months, and the panel members were given the opportunity to revise their selections multiple times. The final list was determined by a vote of the panel members.
Rolling Stone has stated that the list is not intended to be definitive, but rather a reflection of the opinions of the experts who participated. The list has been praised by some for its diversity and inclusivity, and criticized by others for its omissions and subjective criteria.
Apparently:
- The panel members were given the opportunity to revise their selections multiple times.
- The final list was determined by a vote of the panel members.
Rolling Stone has not publicly disclosed who served on the panel for the 2023 list of the 250 greatest guitarists of all time.
Problems With The List
As a guitar player for about 55 years, the biggest problems I always have with the list are the way the players are ordered and the glaring omissions.
For example, Tommy Emmanuel and Ted Nugent did not make the list! What??
I've seen Tommy perform in person six times. If there's someone who can outplay him on acoustic guitar, I'd like to meet that person. He's also a monster electric player.
Ted Nugent, also known as "The Motor City Madman," is an exceptional rock guitar player. Ted is also not in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, but Miles Davis is; not to belittle Miles, who was a musical genius, but it's the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

Who Are In Your Top Ten List?
There's no right or wrong answer, and narrowing the list down to only ten players is almost impossible!
It depends on how you approach music. For example, do you prefer guitar virtuosos or songwriters that play guitar, etc? I value "creative technical ability" above all else in a guitarist.
It seems that Jimi Hendrix always makes number one, who I idolize. Haha
This would most likely be my top ten favorites (The Jimi vs. Jeff for position one is really a tie, in my mind):
- Jimi Hendrix
- Jeff Beck
- Eddie Van Halen
- David Gilmour
- Tony Iommi
- Steve Vai
- Jimmy Page
- Angus Young
- Eric Clapton
- Eric Johnson
How about you? Tell me your top ten favorites, ... AND
Keep On Rockin'!

Joe Bonamassa would be the missing one unless I didn't see him.
I think Uncle Ted should have been there, too.
Another great would be Vince Gill. I have heard him tear that fiddle up.
You are right hard to do a list of ten. Once again, you sent me on a magical mystery tour. LOL, I will be listening to music for the rest of the evening!
Thanks, Rocking Doc, for reminding me of the all-time greats!

Hi, Chet
Yes, Joe B. is missing, along with many others! Vince Gill is on the list (number 202). In my opinion, Neil Young is a great songwriter but not a great player.
My high school band used to do a few cool songs by him, Down By The River and Cinnamon Girl.
Check out this YouTube video from Rick Beato. He is someone who I respect very much, and you should follow him.

Frank πΈ
Hey Frank, Yes, that is true. Neil is more known for writing and vocals. I always thought he differed from the rest.
I felt the same about Leon Russel and his style.
I like all of Neil's stuff; a storyteller of the times.
I must have missed Vince on the list.
πGreat video. After watching that, you realize how many greats aren't on the list. Rick was a little PO about that, huh?:)
Chet
Hi, Chet
Yeah, it's a funny but true video.
Be sure to follow Rick on YouTube. Very entertaining, and you'll pick up some really great playing tips!
Leon Russel is another musical great! π
Frank πΈ
That's a pretty hard one to choose, Frank. If anything I would go with Jimi Hendrix vs Eddie Van Halen.
Myra π
Hi, Myra
Two really excellent choices for the number one spot! πππ
You Rock! π€
Frank πΈ
Iβm a Floydian, Myra, so I would have ranked Gilmour higher.
But they can all play better than me, so best I shut up.
Hope you are well.
Bux
Gilmour sounds like another good choice too, Bux.
Thanks for responding and hope you are doing well as well.
Myra π
I do like looking at these lists Frank and so much is opinion. Jimi Hendrix is top of most lists I've seen. Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and Eddie Van Halen are in most top tens although I notice Eric's down at 35 on this list. These would be my top five.
I'm wondering how both Angus and Malcolm Young can be at number 38, James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett be at number 23 along with eight other "doubles" in there. Surely the list becomes the greatest 260 guitarists and the numbering changes?
Rather than waste time pondering such imponderables, I'll just enjoy the music.
Rick
Hi, Rick
Yes, there is always quite a bit of musical controversy surrounding these types of lists.
Rolling Stone magazine likes to combine players in the same band as one list entry, which I don't think is an objective way to proceed.
I agree, enjoying the music is the most important thing! π

Very nice cover photo, Frank.
You are the expert in this amazing genre. These top ten look like winners to me. However, Eddie Van and Clapton I'd put closer to the top because of familiarity, if that makes sense. Other than than, everything is copacetic, my friend.
Let's keep rolling!
RacheleπΌ
p.s. Brittany Howard is pretty funky. I actually love her music from the first note right out the gate.
Hi Rachele
Eric & Eddie are both fabulous players but with very different styles.
I think the right way to do it is to have a separate list for each genre, like Rock, Metal, Blues, etc.
How can you objectively compare some like B. B. King to Joe Satriani?? They're both incredible, but in totally different ways!
Yeah, Brittany made the list at number 249. πππ

Hi there, Frank.
They are all winners and should be proud of their accomplishments.
This was fun.

Wealthy Affiliate Frank.
This is the best time of year to make up for lost time in terms of pigging out on the good suff.
Nowadays the parents go out with their kids and the amounts of treats collected is mind-blowing. Sacks and sacks of treats.
However, it's not that safe anymore and some folks take their kids to the local mall. This is a much safer route to take.
I just got up, took a hot shower, had my overnight oatmeal with chia seeds, bananas, almond mild, sprouted almond butter and stevia, Uncle Lee's green tea and I'm good to go.
I just popped my laptop open for the day, off and on... and then wait for the first person to ring my door bell. It's only 9:30 a.m. out this way. A little early for the Halloween crowd.
The first year we moved here we had a massive influx of trick or treaters. Not as many now. Great costumes, though.
The step-daughters Jen and Susan, they monitor what my grandkids eat. Kylo just got a full set of teeth so we have to watch out for cavities. Max, fortunately, is a finicky eater and doesn't devour a lot of sweets, knock on wood.
I can remember the tummy aches from eating so much candy as a kid. Oh the agony (lol). The amount of baby Almond Joys, Three Musketeers, Reese's cups, Tootsie Rolls and Kit Kats was insane. Probably enough candy to kill a horse. I am a survivor (lol).
Nowadays, I try to have healthier treats for the trick or treaters; one year I gave out stationary and pens, another year apples, this year Chia Bars and Lay's Baked 85% less fat regular potato chips. They are delish. I order straight from Amazon (40 in a box).
Got to keep my babies healthy. The chips are only 7/8 oz (24.8 g).
Did you ever go out trick or treating when you were little? So much fun.
Rock on!
RacheleπΈ
Hi Rachele
Yeah, I agree that there are some real trick-or-treat safety challenges for kids these days.
There are many ways around that, like the mall thing you mentioned, or at school parties, or get-togethers at a friend's costume party.
I've already eaten way too much Halloween candy this week, and we still have tons left for tonight. We live in a neighborhood with really nice people, so I think the kids are very safe to go door-to-door here.
I'm not much on the whole health food thing. I was brought up eating excellent Italian food, and my wife is a fabulous gourmet cook.
The kids today generally eat much healthier than my generation, which is an excellent approach to aging well.
As a child, I had great fun trick-or-treating and still enjoy the holiday as much as possible. Check out my post for more info: Happy Halloween WA, 2023! Happy Halloween! πππ»

I see you had some humble pie, Maestro.
By the way, I had a 12-foot comment listing my musical influences. Either I forgot to hit post or I was out to lunch (lol).
I am an all-nighter off and on and between the awake and sleep state begins to blur. Not often though.
