Happy Halloween WA, 2023!
HI WA Friends
Are you celebrating Halloween tonight? It's not just for children!
Halloween As A child
Growing up, Halloween was my third favorite holiday after Christmas and my Birthday.
I got more toys for Christmas, but my birthday was a very close second. I had sixteen aunts and uncles on both sides, plus my parents had too many friends to count, and they all gave me gifts for both holidays!
What made Halloween special was the costumes! Of course, there was the fun of trick or treating, but I had candy every day as a child, so the giant pillowcase of treats was no big deal.
My mother was a professional seamstress who made hundreds of costumes a year for a local playhouse and custom-made-to-order wedding gowns. So, she would make us a "stage quality" costume of our choice every Halloween!
So loved the monster movies, but my dad did not care for them, and my brother and sister were too scared to watch, so my mother took me to all the monster movie matinees as a child.
Each year, I got a different monster costume, which I would keep and wear throughout the year for playtime.
My favorite was the Count Dracula costume. I was identical to the original black and white movie with Bela Lugosi, complete with vest, pendant, and cape. The cape had a red velvet lining. It looked exactly like the movie photo below, and my dad made me a cardboard coffin to come out of! Lol
Bela Lugosi as Count Dracula (1931)
So, over the years, I collected costumes of Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, The Creature From The Black Lagoon, The Phantom Of The Opera, The Wolfman, Godzilla, The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, and The Fly (from the first movie with Vincent Price), There were probably others, too. Haha
What To Do On Halloween
There are so many things to do on Halloween, no matter what age you are, but being around children can be the most fun of all!
Stay Home And Give Out Candy
We always give out Halloween candy. It's such a thrill to see all the costumes and excited faces on the children.
I used to play scary "Phantom Of The Opera" pipe organ music on my Roland synthesizer, but I haven't done that in a while. Definitely something to get back to. Lol
Go To A Costume Party Or Host One
We always go to a neighbor's Halloween party, but this year it didn't happen because they had to go away last weekend. There's always next year.
Watch A Scary Movie (courtesy of Bard):
Here are some that might have you sitting on the edge of your seat. We always have scary movies playing while we wait for kids to come to the door!
- The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
- Alien (1979)
- The Shining (1980)
- The Thing (1982)
- A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
- The Fly (1986)
- Hellraiser (1987)
- Candyman (1992)
- Scream (1996)
- The Ring (2002)
- The Grudge (2004)
- Dawn of the Dead (2004)
- 28 Days Later (2002)
- The Descent (2005)
- Hostel (2005)
- The House On The Haunted Hill (1959)
- Halloween (1978)
- Friday the 13th (1980)
Go To A Jack-O-Lantern Show.
Each year, we buy VIP tickets for a show at out largest park, which is set up in the zoo. The profits go to a great cause, and it's an excellent night of horror, eating, drinking, and dancing.
Here are some of my favorite photos from the show we went to this year. There were over a thousand pumpkins that were painted or carved.
Listen To Halloween Songs (courtesy of Bard):
- Ghostbusters Theme Song - Ray Parker Jr.
- Thriller - Michael Jackson
- Monster Mash - Bobby "Boris" Pickett & The Crypt-Kickers
- This Is Halloween - Danny Elfman
- (Don't Fear) The Reaper - Blue Γyster Cult
- I Put a Spell on You - Screamin' Jay Hawkins
- Disturbia - Rihanna
- Psycho Killer - Talking Heads
- Somebody's Watching Me - Rockwell
- Time Warp - The Rocky Horror Picture Show Cast
Play Some Scary Music
There's no better night to play some ominous music than Halloween! I'm talking songs like "The Black Widow" (Alice Cooper), "Bark At The Moon" (Ozzy Osbourne), and "The Evil That Men Do" (Iron Maiden).
So, what guitar do I play every Halloween? My vampire guitar, of course!
Front (pickguard graphic & crystal control knobs)
Rear (tremolo plate graphic & etched neck plate)
It was originally a cheap guitar I put together from parts lying around my workshop for my wife. She didn't play it, so I added the custom vampire graphics and neck plate. I also rewired it with military-grade electronics and popped in three DiMarzio Area 61 pickups., which gave it the totally evil sound it has today! Lol
Don't Skip It, Do Something!
You don't have to do anything big, but do something to mark the occasion. Whatever you decide to do, have as much fun as you can, and let me know what your plans are in the comments!π

Loved the tale and the excellent images Frankie πΈ π!!! You must have FUN creating those!
As Halloween has been a fun occasion to do something one wonβt regularly do, we use this holiday for a fund raising event every year. Let everyone dress up to whatever they fancy . Make a contest out of it, as the βBest Costumeβ, have a dinner-dance along with it. Funds are used to support scholars in the Philippines, who canβt afford to go to college, but has the brains for it.
This was what I was busy for in the past few days, helping out with coordinating!
Cheers,
Maria πΉ
Hi Maria
I didnβt create the pumpkins, I just made the vampire guitar.π§ββοΈ
Your fundraiser sounds awesome! πππ

Happy Halloweenπ»π Frank! and the pumpkin art is brilliant, what talent! ππ π
Here in London, it's been pretty boring, no trick or treaters, mind you it's dark and raining, but my thoughts are the same every year 'where are they all'
Anyways, I have seen most of the movies you highlighted, and if I see any of them again, I probs. wonder why I missed certain bits, and I would still jump, hands over eyes looking sheepishly through my fingers, when it goes quite knowing what's to come nextπ± lol!
Hope you are having an excellent time at your end and lots of spooky stuff going on! and Thanks for sharing such a super post and memories ! π
Hi Julia
The one time you don't get any candy is when they'll all show up at your door! π
We have lots of little kids in our neighborhood, so we give out quite a bit of goodies every year.
Scary movies are always obligatory! Haha
Happy Halloween! πππ«π¦π»π§ββοΈ

I remember that you love Halloween Frank, and also remember that you went over your one spooky cocktail limit last year!!!
So, take it easy ok!!
I can't say that any of those films have ever scared me though..... I find them amusing!!
Back in the day it was always "trick or beer" and the locals new us, so we always did pretty well!!
The wife hates Halloween though, so I haven't celebrated it for a long time!!
Enjoy a fabulous day buddy and Rock On!

Happy Halloween, Frank! There are some very talented pumpkin artists in your neck of the woods.
Itβs great to read about your awesome childhood memories. I always loved this time of year too as my mom would make my costumes and decorate the house. So many great memories! We were so lucky. I hope you have a great evening giving out treats to little goblins!
Susan ππ»π«ππΈπ€
Hi Susan
Yeah, they put on a great jack-o-lantern show every year, and we always look forward to it.
I do remember all those spooky decorations inside the house and the skeleton with the evil laugh that my mom hung in the corner of the living room. It ran on batteries, and its eyes glowed bright red!
One Halloween, she snuck out the back door, dressed in a witch's mask and costume. She rang the front doorbell and forced her way into the house when my dad answered the door, running all around with the broom between her legs and making witch noises.
My dad kept calling for his wife to come and help. None of us had any idea it was her until she took the mask off. Lol ππ€£
The little ones that come all dressed up are always the best part of the evening! ππ
Have a great Halloween! π»π§ββοΈπ¦πππ«
Frank π€πΈ
Wow, those were great costumes, Frank!
I am going to play in a Halloween themed pool tournament, not sure if I will wear it, but I do have a Batman onesey, with cape.
Rudy
That sounds like great fun, Rudy, and I'd definitely wear the costume!
Best of Luck with the tournament!
Happy Halloween! π¦ππ§ββοΈ
Frank π€πΈ
A Halloween themed pool tournament sounds great Rudy, right up my street!
Just take it easy on the beers my friend, those Batman onesey's are a nightmare when you need to use the little boys room!!
πππ€£
And fun you will certainly have wearing one of those Rudy!!
Have a great one my friend!!
πππ»
Thank you!
I was dressed in incognito, meaning, just my normal stuff, not even my batman symbol shirt!
My team partner was dressed as a zombie Hermione from Harry Potter.
Together, we placed in a tie for 3rd place and won $25 each!
Quite a fun night!
Rudy
Excellent stuff Rudy!
You can't beat having a fun night and coming home 25 bucks better off my friend!

What an entertaining post Frank! My wife adored Hallowe'en...ours wasn't the most decked out on the block but she had it decorated. Her thing was every kid got about 5 different treats...the kids all said ours was the best on the block...we move out to the east coast last March so I wonder if the kids will miss us...
Thanks, Grant! πΈ
Iβm sure the kids in your old neighborhood miss you dearly!π
Frank πΈ
You are most welcome Frank! Penelope catered to those kids all right...i'm sure they do!
