Happy Birthday Gary Moore! (April 4, 1952)
(Title Image By DALL-E 3)
Hi WA Friends!
Let's celebrate the birthday of the Irish Blues, Rock, and Metal guitar virtuoso Gary Moore!
A Little Background
Gary Moore, born Robert William Gary Moore on April 4, 1952, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, was a guitarist known for his expressive and powerful playing style that bridged the worlds of Blues, Rock, and Metal with remarkable ease and fluidity. Gary began playing the guitar at eight years old, and by the time he was sixteen, he moved to Dublin to join the blues-rock band Skid Row, not to be confused with the American metal band of the same name. It was here that Gary's professional music career truly took off.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Gary's name became synonymous with virtuoso guitar playing, joining bands like Thin Lizzy and Colosseum II, and contributing to their unique sounds with his fiery guitar solos and emotional depth. His tenure with Thin Lizzy, in particular, was marked by a close friendship with the band's frontman, Phil Lynott, leading to several collaborations between the two, including the hit song "Parisienne Walkways."
Gary's solo career led him to explore various musical genres, from hard rock in the early days to a more blues-oriented approach in his later years. Albums like "Still Got the Blues" cemented his reputation as a master blues guitarist, earning him critical acclaim and a new generation of fans. Gary's untimely death on February 6, 2011, left a void in the music world, but his legacy as a guitar legend continues to inspire generations of players.

Tell Me What You Think!
Have you heard of Gary before reading this post?
What's your favorite album?
I had the honor of seeing Gary twice in concert over the years, and he signed a copy of his "Victims Of The Future" album for me. Here's a look at it. Sorry, I couldn't get any closer, but the reflections from the sun made it harder to see.

Thin Lizzy, what a creative band. I remember many friends accompanying Gary Moore on the air guitar as the alcohol flowed like no tomorrow. the 70s and 80s were a great time to be out and about on a Saturday night.
I never realized just how much work Gary Moore had put out. A great post.
Bux
Thanks, Bux! 🙏
Yeah, Thin Lizzy was a great band, for sure!👍
Gary did some amazing solo albums, too! 😎
Rock On! 🤘
Frank 🎸
Yes, I was looking down your list. I’m sure I owned a Gary Moore album at one time. If I remeber, mum didn’t like it.
Haha, Bux.
My mother was very cool about my music.
When she found out that Frank Zappa was coming to town she insisted on going and I was elated to take her.
She was one of the few, if not the only 78 year old people in attendance. Lol 😎
Frank 🎸
That's great that she took part Frank. Yes, it must have been good for you to go out with mum. Did she enjoy it.
Bux
She loved it, Bux!
I was locked in on the complexity of his music, but she was more enthralled with the humor behind his lyrics and his “diction.”
When I was in high school I could put on an album and she’d say “that’s Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, The Who,” etc. and rarely be wrong.
I guess we really brainwashed her, lol, but our parents played music for us from birth, on record, the radio, and instruments (ukulele, guitar, piano, banjo, & harmonica).
The both really loved all types of music and instilled that appreciation in us.😎

Fantastic Frank. My folks liked silence, no wonder I left home at 16 - but I still went back when I was on leave, funny that.
My late grand father mentioned Gary on several occasions and was a fan of his music. As soon as I seen this post, it brought back memories of hearing stories at Grandma and grandpa's house.
That's great, John!
Stream some of his music when you get a chance. You won't be disappointed. 😎

I LOVE Garyy Moore! My first live gig, I was 16 I think, and was more impressed than the main act: Fleetwood Mac. My gosh, those days haha!
Lizzy
Hi Lizzy
Haha, you really listen to great music! 👍👍😎
Do you remember the days when Peter Green was in Fleetwood Mac? Peter played a 1959 Les Paul guitar that became known as "Greeny."
Peter sold Greeny to Gary Moore, and when Gary died, Kirk Hammett from Metallica bought the guitar for an unofficially disclosed amount, but probably close to 2 million dollars (US)!
Rock On! 🤘

One of the best guitarists to come out of Ireland in my opinion Frank and I would have to say that Thin Lizzy's "Jailbreak" is the album that stands out the most for me!!
But... was Gary actually a member of the band when they recorded it??
Happy Birthday Gary and Rock On Frank!!
👍🍻😎🎸
Hi Nick
I agree! Another great Irish guitar player is Rory Gallagher. 😎
No, Gary didn't play on the Jailbreak album. He played on the Thin Lizzy "Nightlife," "Black Rose," and "Life" albums.
Rock On! 🤘
Frank 🎸
Rory Gallagher indeed Frank... didn't he found Taste, or The Taste... or something like that?
I didn't think Gary played on "Jailbreak", you may wish to check the info posted here from chatty!!
Rock On buddy!!
👍🍻😎🎸
Hi Nick
Yeah, Rory played with Taste.
I fixed the discography. Thanks for pointing that out! 😎
Rock On! 🤘

Excellent stuff Frank!
The perfect opportunity to try a Singapore Sling!!!
May I recommend just half measures on the different spirits to start with though!!
🤣🤣😎🎸👍🍹
Haha, no worries, Nick.
I'd only have a very small glass or just a few sips. 😎
Rock On! 🤘🍹
Frank 🎸
But make sure the measurements are right Frank...
It's a tricky cocktail to get on the top of!
Rock On buddy!!

Pretty hot guitar playing, right!? 😎
Frank 🤘🎸
Jeff, that song just goes to show how long you can sustain a single note with a Les Paul guitar and a couple of Marshall stacks! Lol 😎
Frank 🎸
You're welcome, Jeff.
I knew you'd love it! Lol 😎
Stream some of his albums when you get a chance.
Frank 🎸
Hi Jim
Check out an album from his discography, and I think you'll be impressed by what you hear! 😎
Frank 🎸
Thats quite a collection, there, Frank!!
No,I had not heard of Gary Moore, and I remember ro listening to Thin Lizzy, back in the day!
Rudy
Thanks, Rudy! 🙏
I have walls of autographed albums in my music studio from the days when I was the backstage doc at a big concert venue. Lol 😎
Yeah, Thin Lizzy (the American version) was quite a band. They got the simultaneous double guitar solo thing going. Listen closely to any of their albums, and you'll hear what I'm talking about.
Rock On! 🤘
Frank 🎸
Very cool, man. Oh, the stories you could tell, Im sure!
I looked up Thin Lizzy to recall the songs I knew from them, one I remembered was, 'The Boys Are Back in Town'. I also noticed that they did Whiskey in a Jar.
I recognized the title.
Thin Lizzy recorded it in 73, but it wasnt until recently when I heard the version from Metallica,
Trivia history of the song 'Whiskey in a Jar'.
Its an old traditional Irish song!
Rudy
Thanks, Rudy!
Yeah, I had some really great times backstage with all those big acts, hahaha! 😎
Those are two great songs! 👍👍
I was telling Lizzy in this post thread that Kirk Hammett bought Gary's guitar after he passed away.

Great write up, Frank!
While reading your post, I saw Skid Row and thought...what? Haha. I then read on.
One of the most memorable songs I've ever heard live was during the Generation Axe concert about 5 years ago, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Zakk Wylde, Nuno Bettencourt and Tosin Abasi played Still Got the Blues in 4 part guitar harmony.......it was magical! I will never forget it!
Happy Birthday Gary!! 🎸🤘🎸🤘
Tim 🎼
Thanks, Tim!
Yeah, the players you mentioned are all amazing!
I’ve got all the G3 concerts on Blu-ray and they’re all excellent.😎
Rock On! 🤘
