"Co-founder Larry Page and Sergey Brin were originally calling the company 'Backrub'." Is that a joke or were they really considering calling the company "Backrub"? Good thing they went with Google instead! Bing probably WISHES Google had been named "Backrub" instead.

A propos of nothing: I wish I could show you my face the moment I Googled my college boyfriend/best friend (several years ago) just to see what cool things he is up to, and was greeted with many photos of him with his friends Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. (My college boyfriend is international to say the least - makes me feel like I should be achieving a whole lot more than I am, sigh, but I'm working on it!)
It is a small world!

Small world. Sounds like he may have been a keeper. Does he work for Google now?

I don't think he has ever worked for Google (and I have no idea what a keeper is (?)) Haven't talked with him in a long time but would be fascinated to hear about his adventures around the world. Some day I'll probably just run into him in the most unlikely place, who knows? :)

Your post about Google is fascinating; I didn't even know how high their average salaries are - pretty amazing.

Thanks again for your great posts!
Kate

Yeah, that salary amount jumped out at me too. A keeper would have been someone you should have stayed with. Wow, Brin is the president of Alphabet, who owns Google. Thanks for the kind words.

Mark

Okay I'm laughing out loud now! I didn't know you meant keeper in the context of one you shouldn't let get away - of course!
(Also, his great uncle was Yeats the poet, so there's that. Small world x 2 : )

I guess I had all kinds of vaguely sinister/big brother ideas of what a "keeper" could be in the context of someone who is a Google employee ... as in, a Google employee at the top echelons whose job it is to be a "keeper" surrounding the big bosses/co-founders. lolol

I have a story to tell about the strange synchronicity between my friend/college boyfriend and I -- it's almost impossible to be a mere coincidence -- but I don't know at all what it means, so I'll wait for another day.

I look forward to that. What countries in Eastern Europe did you live? I am so homesick for Kyiv I could scream.

I spent two summers in Prague. I studied at Charles University Law School during one of the summers - my first summer after my first year of law school in the U.S.

Taking law classes at Charles University Law School in Prague was an amazing experience.

But going to Prague was really so that I could visit one of my best friends who I met when I lived in France (she still lives in Praha). It was great to spend two summers in Prague with my friend who lives there and speaks the language.

I would love to visit Kyiv - Eastern Europe is so beautiful!

Have you written about Kyiv on your websites/blogs?

Now I'll have to look for Instagram accounts based in Kyiv : )

Instagram is so cool because it lets us sort of vicariously experience "a day in the life" in places we've never been (or want to get back to), through someone else's eyes/photos.

Looking forward to your next post!
Kate

I had a stopover in Prague on the way to Kyiv. What an amazing city, especially at night. I plan on going back in the near future.

The editor of Ukraine: Life and Culture magazine introduced herself on facebook and read my About Me blog post here at WA. She wants me to do 4000 words for her magazine about why I chose Ukraine to retire.

I told her I could write a novel. The people, traditions, history, customs, etc....are amazing. After I told her how I met my Ukrainian girlfriend and our story, she said give her 8000 words!

The cost of living is so low. $150K USD is like $400K in spending money there. Do a price comparison on numbeo.com and you will see how it is just too good to pass up. And the half-plus seven rule is right down this single guys alley.

$100 will get you round trip tickets to any capital in Europe and Kyiv IS the new Paris. Ukraine is really taking off. And I am going to be right in the middle of it. A bunch of blogging material for sure. And WA could really change a lot of lives there.

They say you can never go home. They say home is where the heart is. My heart is in Ukraine and I am going home soon. No more America for me. It is turning into a 3rd world country I do not recognize any more.

Making a living, making a difference(in Ukraine).

I guess Google doesn't need my ad revenue then? lol

Hmmm ??

“63K searches/second“ Actually equals 5.4432 Billion searches a day .. as opposed to the stated 5.6Billion ??

I wonder where those “extra” 156.8Million searches came from ?

Have a great time with your BBQ!

Great info and trivia questions!

Thanks for the cool interesting facts Mark.
Enjoy the Rib lol. any tips from Markio to make some succulent ribs would be well appreciated...

I like dry ribs. Sauce on the side. Low and slow with plenty of good friends and cold beverages. Rendevous Dry Rub is the type of rub I use. But I tweak it a bit and use Smoked paprika and another secret or two. You can get the recipe online.
