So why am I depressed, and how do I cope with this depression?

I was given some warning signs regarding depression which I want to share with whoever fits the SHOE!

Depression is a serious mental illness that affects millions of Americans each year.

According to those savvy in this materia, symptoms of depression include feelings of sadness, irritability, worthlessness and guilt, fatigue or tiredness, changes in sleep and eating habits. If you think you're suffering from depression, seek help from your doctor or a licensed mental health professional. Treatment can often alleviate depression. Developing coping mechanisms and making changes to your lifestyle can also help you to better handle and reduce the symptoms.

Examples are: Your boss chews you out. A car hits a puddle and splashes dirty water all over you. You are having difficulties in your relationship with your partner or spouse. Your business is not making money. You feel being back-stabbed by others who you trusted. Your other half has been cheating on you for years and you just discovered this secret. there are too many happenings and events that causes stressful depressing conditions.

It’s a bad day, but it’s only one day. But depression, which affects one in 10 Americans, doesn’t go away with a flip of the calendar.

Its symptoms usually persist for two weeks or more and typically do not subside without treatment. Unfortunately, most people do not realize that depression’s symptoms aren’t as simple as “feeling sad.” What’s more, every person experiences depression differently, and some may experience more symptoms than others. That means that far too often depression goes unrecognized, and those affected by it are forced to suffer in silence.

It is difficult to know if what people feel is a result of depression or due to a sleeping disorder or maybe some kind of physical condition, such as hypoglycemia, a thyroid issue or some other sort of hindrance.

People may think they are depressed but really be fighting something else and not know it.

We also hold in a lot of emotions and that takes a lot of energy, thus drains you.

The term depression is sort of like saying your sick...which covers a thousand different conditions.

Pinpointing it is not easy.

My definition of it is simply a fatigue of the spirit no matter the cause.

It is a very deep seeded sadness that comes from nowhere it seems...but I don'agree that taking pills is a solution.

Coached Therapy seems to be of great help for some..

Awareness and realizing that your thoughts are just thoughts and not to trust them is the best way to deal with it. Remember the saying of old: This Too Shall Pass!

And then you have people who specialize in Depression Solving issues out there who can help you in "surviving" and overcoming this illness.

Depression is a problem throughout the world big time. Especially as life is much faster paced and very demanding at times. If a person is feeling these symptoms then go to your doctor as there are definitely very positive help to deal with it. There is no need to suffer in this day and age.

As Christians we are told the best way to beat depression is to trn yor eyes on the Lord Jesus. Knowing you are a precious child of God.

Amen. I agree.

And sometimes when we are sick, even God wants us to seek professional help - even Christians.

First of all, my agreement with turning to the Lord was in NO WAY indicative of NOT seeking assistance from a doctor! Sweetie you have NO IDEA WHAT I HAVE BEEN THROUGH WITH BOTH MY PHYSICAL AND MENTAL ILLNESSES! I have had part (almost half) of my right kidney removed to save the major organs surrounding them from being RAVISHED by the most aggressive kidney cancer one can possibly have! I am WELL aware that KNOWLEDGE that doctors have comes from God, so I prayed that God would guide THEIR minds as well as their hands in that grueling, most painful and scary surgery I've ever had to endure. And I've had MANY surgeries TO endure, as well I have been through ten different kinds of hell in my EMOTIONAL life. And I DON'T appreciate your commentary on a two word reply I made to someone else, and THIS is not an ANGRY comment to you either. It's a WAKE up CALL that I have been given myself based upon your ASSUMPTIONS from a very small comment made by me. WHO SAID THAT I SEE THE BODY AND THE MIND AS SEPARATE ENTITIES!? THE LESSON I HOPE YOU LEARN HERE IS THAT YOU SHOULD NEVER EVER ASSUME THAT YOU KNOW SO MUCH ABOUT A PERSON OR THEIR OPINIONS AND BELIEFS FROM SUCH A MINUTE PIECE OF INFORMATION! YOU, MY WA FRIEND, HAVE JBITT ALL WRONG AND YOU JUMPING TO CONCLUSIONS ABOUT ME OR WHAT I BELIEVE DOESN'T REFLECT WELL ON YOUR OWN CHARACTER.

I apologize if I hurt your feelings but the comments I made were not directed at you. I thought I hit reply to the first comment In fact, in my last communication with you, I thanked you for your concern. I was not hurt & I was not judging anyone. I'm sorry you felt I was attacking you in some way. That was NEVER my intention. Even when I disagree with someone, I would never intentionally hurt them. Plus, I actually agree with you!

Thanks for sharing! Great Info from one whose mom has suffered with depression plus bipolar and Schizophrenia. It doesn't go away on it's own.

Good blog. I sincerely hope that it helps someone!

It's very easy to say "just think happy thoughts" or some other platitude, but it's not that easy to do. Furthermore, it doesn't always work. Some people do benefit from anti-depressants while others can find relief elsewhere. If you've experienced it and found something that worked for you, by all means, share it. But if you haven't walked that path, you have no idea how it feels. I'm sure your intentions are good, but your words may cause additional hurt because the depressed person already feels badly about him/herself and now you've provided some other metric by which to measure failure. Instead of saying, "just do this," say, "here's what works (or worked) for me.

Here's what works for me:
Anti-depressants(YES!), exercise, pain reliever for R.A., writing, expressing my feelings before they become overwhelming, and not allowing anyone else to make me feel badly about myself.

Sweetie I think we all know how to "agreed to disagree" so that being said I think that the article was meant to be informational and has good points and resources. It points to a vast majority of the world, and I too have taken meds for depression and anxiety and still do, therefore I did something I didn't even realize I was doing until I read your negative reaction to this article. I posted that I too HAD taken pills and that they only mask the problem, when un clarification, it should be said that I DO STILL take meds for depression and anxiety, I just take different ones that aren't classified as a certain class of particular drugs. And you're right, that is a biased opinion issue that should be addressed as so, stating something more along the lines of myself speaking on the matter of prescription drug benefits for different types of popular drugs used for depression and anxiety, saying that although one or two weren't right for me, that doesn't mean it's not the best option for someone else. So I see your point, but I hope you are merely giving constructive criticism and not talking this article too personally and having a blow to your self esteem. Because I am sure that you are a wonderful person and depression is something we have in common so I hope that we can be friends and keep in touch in WA.

Thank you, truly. I'm not taking it too personally and I agree with you. Different things work for different people. I'm just bothered when I feel others are quick to judge and tell you what you should do or who you should be. There is no right or wrong way to cope with depression; sometimes people just need to find their own way. I want to encourage other people to do that because, ultimately, no one else's opinion matters. The good feelings come from within (and yes, I do believe God can help fill that hole), and we need the experiences to learn the lessons that make us who we are. Julie, I think you are awesome and I appreciate you reaching out to me! I turned 50 this year and now I understand what they say about speaking your mind more freely as you get older. I'm good with who I am.

You are doing a positive move by talking about your feelings. It's a brave step in the right direction. Most people don't want to here about depression probably because they are trying to not slip into it themselves. Ask yourself where do these feelings originate, somewhere within you know. If you can get a handle on them they will change.
Trevor

May I suggest reading some Tony Robbins, Unlimited Power. He talks about depression. A very good read. I agree that taking pills is not the answer. Think positive thoughts. :)

To all my friends:

Think and be happy. I see too much depressing messages. It's better to let things go and start thinking for the future. Just find something to do that will excite you like a hobby or maybe...a money venture. :)

Depression is a very tough thing to go through and most doctors prescribe anti depressants without trying to figure out what causes the problem. One thing that research has shown is that many people who are suffering from depression need vitamin B12, but most regular doctors don't know that. I for one have found that taking large doses of that vitamin helps A LOT, so if you have that problem it might be worth it to get that.
Take care and stay strong, Kristina

B12 & B6 are said to hel .

Just pray.

Yes I agree with CT.A relationship with the Lord will help you
mentally and emotionally.

Marty
