Have you ever asked yourself what ultimately is there? And what is it like?
That's exactly the whole concept behind metaphysics! It's a fascinating, thrilling journey when meta-physicians are discovering how to clarify the fundamental notions by which people understand the world, existence, objects and their properties, space, time, cause and effect and possibility.It's all just a big ah to me, in an amazing wonderful way! And I wish I knew everything this beautiful universe has to offer us!
The following information I got from Wikipedia, just to shorten a brief summary of exactly what it is,so you get a better understanding of it, and hopefully (like me) You'll want to keep learning more about how us as a human have so much in common with whole beautiful universe. (more than you thought). There's basically a lot of philosophies behind metaphysics and the one that you choose to decide is completely your own point of view of it and is perfectly fine. Here' s a few that I got... Determinism is the philosophical proposition that every event, including human cognition, decision and action, is causally determined by an unbroken chain of prior occurrences. It holds that nothing happens that has not already been determined. The principal consequence of the deterministic claim is that it poses a challenge to the existence of free will. The problem of free will is the problem of whether rational agents exercise control over their own actions and decisions. Addressing this problem requires understanding the relation between freedom and causation, and determining whether the laws of nature are causally deterministic. Some philosophers, known as Incompatibility, view determinism and free will as mutually exclusive. If they believe in determinism, they will therefore believe free will to be an illusion, a position known as Hard Determinism. Others, labeled Compatibility believe that the two ideas can be coherently reconciled. Incompatibility who accept free will but reject determinism are called Libertarians.
Anyway, back to my question? On what do you believe? I'll tell you my perspective about the whole thing. And leave your comment below telling me what you think? Many avenues this subject will take you... existentialism first came to my mind, along with Nietzsche, Aristotle. Then I thought of Erich von Däniken and his work re "The Chariots of the Gods". For a while in my early 20's I was a fence sitter re God. I was like you, I asked many many questions. I did some soul searching and talked with many people.
Then I talked with a very open religious man re our existence, the meaning of life, are things pre-determined, etc. He is a pastor. We talked about many things. I said to him "explain the Pyramids in Egypt and Mexico and Peru and the lines of Nazca, the giant heads on Easter Island, and all the other abnormalities in this world. How could ancient civilizations in Egypt and then another civilization half a world away build pyramids?" "And how can we be?" I also said it seems to me that things are pre-determined. Explain the billions of stars out there?
He listened quite intently. Then he smiled and calmly said something that has always followed me ever since... He said, "There may very well be extraterrestrials that are more advanced than us. They may very well have visited this planet earth... but there is not any being no matter how advanced they are, is higher than God himself."
A huge light went off in my head, and that summed it up for me. I will always believe in a higher being, or God.
I also believe in "karma". Wow do I ever! Do something bad to someone, and sooner or later it will come back and give you a payback and kick you in the ass. Do something good, or even better be a good person and you will be rewarded. In ways you would never have dreamed of! Good and bad karma work!
I once believed in determinism, but now I am convinced that we all have the free will to do anything whenever we want... our aura around us and in us is not pre-determined by any entity or being. Everything is all up to each of us! Our aura and will is as unique to each of us as is our fingerprints are to each one of us!
Why are you and everyone else here at WA? To make money of course, but that is secondary. The primary goal I believe for all of us is to gain a higher level of freedom... in this American society or even in a marxist/communist society, if you want freedom, you are going to need money!
I got rather long in writing this, but this is a favorite subject of mine. I hope you will not be put off by my views...

Try not to get to intellectual over this it turns people away, finding peace can not be done by the acquisition of knowledge it can only be found in the silence that our egos fear so much

Some would argue that the answer to this question is not on wikipedia, or in conversation or in a text book but within, deep within. If you wanted to talk with people who knew the answer to this, then you'd seek out those that went within to find it. Would that be within native cultures, old ways, spiritual people and shamans?
There will be many true answers to this. Truth, or what is true is dependant on the level of knowledge one has. For example a child who covers there eyes so that they can't see you would say "you can't see me!" because they do not have the cognitive ability to comprehend that people can see them even when they don't see others.
If you were seeking the answers to this I'd start by exploring within and within the area where the knowledge is. The old knowledge.
There is one truth often written and you see it repeatedly. It is also understood by wisemen or shamans in native cultures and that is;
There is only one.
Now you can read that, talk about it and reason about whether it is true or not. Or even what it means. Or you can go within and find the answer. When you discover the answer you will know what the truth is. And I am aware that it is the truth for that level of knowledge. Is that the ultimate answer or is it just another step.
You are at the beginning of an interesting journey.
If you keep going down this path you will find a place of bliss beyond anything that exists here. Again you will know this only when you experience it.

Too hard stuff for me, I am only a physicist. This "meta" is an extra for me. Not sure about your stating question "... what ultimately is there? And what is it like?" Where?
Meta physics is a kind of hybrid that combines the discoveries of physics with philosophy. While physics can explain how the universe evolved to the state we experience today, meta physics wants to know "why" it is or what is the purpose of it being the way it is.
Some of us perfectly comfortable living in a universe without a specific purpose or meaning while others feel the need to answer the "why" question.
