There is actually a neat tool that is FREE by Adobe that will allow you to test the look a page in all browsers. "Adobe BrowserLab allows you to easily conduct browser compatibility testing and preview web pages across popular browsers."
Internet explorer 8,9 - windows
Firefox 11 - OSX / windows
Safari 5.1 - OSX
Chrome 18 - windows
Here is the link: https://browserlab.adobe.com/
This can help give you a look at what the site looks like, but it does not provide functionality. You will still need to test the pages for functionality in all browsers.
Thanks, Carson, I only use it in conjunction with Dreamweaver, I'd forgotten it can be used as a standalone *viewer*. Rich.
This is a good tool for viewing the design, but we have to remember that "functionality" is not tested here. A button that works in Chrome, may not work in IE!
This is still useful though.
I forgot to mention that you will need to register with a free adobe account by giving them your email address to get access to this tool.
Hey Deborah,
I've never found a free one that's actually any good. If you have high-end web development software this usually lets you emulate the major browsers.
If you're on a Mac you can use Parallels http://www.parallels.com/ which lets you keep multiple operating systems and browsers open. There are also some premium services such as http://crossbrowsertesting.com/
Opera have a good mobile emulator which is a free download at: http://www.opera.com/developer/tools/mobile/
Chrome currently has the lead in browser market share, so if nothing else make sure your site looks OK with that.
Rich.
Thanks Rich!
I do work in Chrome, so at least I've got that going for me! I'm working on a PC with Windows, so Parallels won't work. I can check out Opera, though!

Testing Site Appearance in Different Browsers

Once again my non computer literate side shows - I had not even thought of this. I am sorry to ask a silly question but out of your testing do you find many things that don't work in different browsers and in any event how would we know or where would we go to learn how to put these things right?
Thanks
Hudson
I have a good recent example. On the site I'm currently building, at http://webcashworkshop.com, I used a social slider plug-in - a plug-in that provided lots of different sharing options to visitors (Facebook, Twitter, etc.). I set the plug-in to fully open (show all sharing options) when the page first loads.
I discovered that in some browers, the sharing buttons that loaded covered up part of the content! So, I adjusted the plug-in settings so that the sharing buttons don't show until the reader selects a "share" button at the top of the page.
I hope that helps!
