Restart In 0.5
Oops! This was meant to be my big launch post Yeah!!!
No...
I guess I'm glad I did the keyword research because it actually pointed me off into a vastly different direction to the one I assumed I would go in.
So... What Happened?
Well, I assume that you all thought I'd be going down the route of basing a niche website around water filters.
Well, I did an alphabet soup keyword search on Google.com (basing my search area on the USA - go to settings>search settings then scroll down until you see the list of countries and pick the button for which ever country you want Google to return the searches for). I did the space in front and behind my search terms then I did the letter "a" in front and behind all the way through the alphabet - which returned over 1500 keywords! All of these keywords were from Google Autocompletion or Instants (as I think it's called now) so they have all been searched by proper people.
The Search Result Breakdown
I was anticipating that there would be a lot of question-style searches returned - along the lines of "How do I buy a water filter for my house/faucet/camp" etc. but no..
75% of the returns were based around product numbers, so I'd see returns such as: "C-cs-ff water filter". Now, the thing is, Jaaxy just doesn't come up with figures for that (in my experience anyway) so, over half of my keywords that I know are being searched for have no value on Jaaxy.
The Reason Behind The Search
Another thing that I just couldn't do was get inside the searchers' heads. I couldn't work out what they wanted.
I was hoping that people would be asking more about refrigerators with water dispensers which I could then promote as an affiliate; but, instead, they're asking about replacement filters for fridges they've already bought! So, a massive reduction in price for them and a collapse in affiliate commissions for me.
2 searches stood out for me - 1 was water filter pitchers, there were a lot of returns for these - mainly based around the businesses like Target, Costco, Amazon and Walmart. But, really, there isn't enough interest there to build a niche website around - at least, I didn't think so.
However...
There was an area of searches that I initially pooh-poohed and that was the returns based around "diy", "homemade", "simple", "natural", "personal" - all these keywords could be thought of as a way into the preppers/survivalist niche - one niche that is full of passionate people who have cash to buy information and products.
The Takeaway
Don't get hooked on one idea - your keyword research may send you off in another direction entirely.
Oh, and be aware - keyword research takes a loooong time to do - thoroughly worth doing but put aside a decent chunk of time to do it properly.
What's Next?
Doomsday, Apocalypse and The End Of Days - yup, I'm heading off to the Survival/Prepping market to find out more about water and life as we know it!

That's okay. It's best to find out sooner, rather than later. I wish you all the best with your new niche.
Take care,
Mickey
Good for you--at least you're still moving forward! When a door closes a window opens somewhere else, my friend!
