Five Thousand Dollars A Month - For Real! - Niche Choice

Howdy Folks
OK, this will be series of posts that actually 'walk the walk' - I'll be taking a niche, doing the keyword research, writing the posts, publishing them to a siterubix site, doing the maximum in the way of on and off page SEO and also checking on what affiliate programs and products I can use on the site.

I am going to base my research on the U.S. simply because they are big and speak English (mainly - possibly)

So, I've decided to look into the 'hobby' area of life as people with a hobby like to buy products in their specialty to make their hobby more fun.

Step 1 - Hobby Research

First step is to find the top hobbies in U.S. and go from there. So, let's sign out from my Google a/c to lessen the effect of earlier searches and let's grab a look at the search results for the search "Top 10 hobbies in the US"

Here is an interesting result from the website Statista.com:

Now, these statistics were collated back in 2020 and here are the criteria Statista used when gathering the information:

So, these were the results of 25,110 people returning a multiple of answers to the question "What are your hobbies and interests?"

Let's grab a look at the hobbies mentioned and dig a little deeper.

Music, Food - both of these are super competitive and very little chance of our brand new, titchy blog making any reasonable dent in these areas.

Reading/Writing, Travel and Pets - there are certainly more 'cracks' we can explore in these areas. Creative writing, how to write a novel/book, course creation, book/magazine reviews, budget travel, gap-year travel, group travel, off-the-beaten-path travel, travelling by (mode of transport), Breed of pet, pet-specific care, pet-specific training, pet-specific gear

Video Games, Health and Fitness, Watching Sports - I don't like video games (I played Tomb Raider when it came out and gave up after running my Lara into a wall for 24 hours as I couldn't figure out how to turn her around!) Health & Fitness - plenty of space in here, however, unless I keep it very shallow and non-medical I could fall foul of he search engines requirements for expertise in these areas - best to stay away in my circumstances. Watching sports - hmm, it's definitely a space but it doesn't really interest me

Arts & Crafts, Technology/Computers, Socializing, Gardening - Definitely hobby areas in the A&C arena - painting to flower arranging, making stuff, upcycling, recycling etc. Technology and Computers - I quite like tech and gear and 'stuff'' - could incorporate it into the A&C arena, possibly. Socializing - well, not really possible right now but there's an angle with all the apps out there, from Zoom to Skype to Facetime etc. - could also incorporate into the Tech & Comp section. Gardening - I don't have one so nope.

Photography, Playing Sports, Dancing. - Dancing - LOL, no!, Playing Sports - prefer to watch than take part. Photography... although super-competitive there are cracks - smartphone images, filters etc., can be combined with Tech & Comps, A&C (to a degree).

OK, so, let's see what I've left myself with:

Reading/Writing

Travel

Pets

Arts & Crafts

Technology and Computers

Photography

Nope, going to wipe the top 3 on this list - arts & crafts - meh - don't have the patience. Tech, Comps and Photography - let's just let those merge in my brain while I have a break...

OK, I've had my break and I think I've found one - Astronomy!

Combines the Tech & Computer and the Photography markets quite nicely.

Let's see what Jaaxy has to say about it.

Searching on the word 'astronomy' I found this one:

Unfortunately it's only available as a .net or a .org - let's keep on looking

Look and ye shall see!

I'm going to grab that as my URL!

Success! I've discovered a niche and a URL - sweetly done - let's go and build my siterubix.

And done!

stargazingtonight.siterubix.com is launched!

The theme I have chosen is called Chronus and I've used that one because I've used it on other sites and I like it. I also put a quick background image of a starry sky - just to reinforce what the site is about - looks quite smart :-)

OK, that's enough for now - the next in this series will be about keyword research.

The post is really informative. It gives a wonderful picture of your process. Thanks for sharing this.

No problem Jim - thank you for the comment

Dom great post, I look forward to the continuation, as I am going back through the training. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you Annette - this one is a biggie as it has to work - it has to get that $5K a month

Dom good one I guess i should forget about my site about health although it's about my experiences with vitamins and natural remedies, like 3 % hydrogen peroxide to get rid of a cold really quick .
I haven't had a cold in about 7 yrs now, it's quite amazing😁
I was planning to start another site and I like your choice stargazing. I have a free app that shows where the stars are every night depending where you live. You may find it interesting.
I was thinking with your Last name it would be cool to have a site a about valentines day, it's history, products for sale etc. With your name it would sound very cool.

This business of affiliate marketing is a self managed business. People almost need a coach just like people who want to exercise hire a coach to tell them which weights to lift or exercises to do and what to eat.

In 30 years of selling I saw a lot if incredible salespeople and I saw a lot of people become really good at selling with a manager ragging on them everyday telling them to make 20 calls, see 20 people, pass out 50 flyers .
Then to see them make a lot of money and think I don't need to work here anymore and go on their own and fail cause nobody was there to push them.
I think that's where they got the saying behind every successful man is a good woman ha ha.
I have been guilty of this also. It's hard to keep yourself motivated specially when you are not succeeding.
Credit cards became very successful staring in the 70's cause they were easy to use. Cars became very successful because they were easy to use. You use to have a clutch and then automatic transmissions got better and now all cars mostly are automatics.Cars have a steering wheel gas and brake.
Now computers on the other hand 🤔 well don't get me started there is a learning curve and it also helps if you can type fairly fast.
So, a lot of people will try something that is easier, it's human nature.

I remember Scotty from star trek captain kirk told him he had to type into the computer it wasn't a talking computer. The day that happens will be a major break through. I don't mean just typing for you but actually figuring out what you want the computer to do.
As I am typing this a scientist in china is producing 10,000 robots like the one on the jimmy fallon show last year every month. This robot has been trained to play the piano now apparently has her own credit card, has spoken to the United nations etc. Check it out you will be amazed.
Until then my friend we have to set a goal and try to keep on keeping on ha ha.
Have a great week, will be checking out your future posts! Now get down and give me 20 push ups soldier!!!

Only 20 Sarge?
Thanks for the reply John, motivation is a cruel mistress at times

I know 🤯

Hi Dom
I nice post as usual ...
I'm curious ... you look for a URL then use a siterubix subdomain instead ... what is the thinking behind this, please?
:-)
Richard

It's a fine question Richard. My initial thought process was to use the siterubix site to 'test the water' by posting 10 or so posts and see if they gathered any traffic but you may well be right and I should take the plunge and buy the domain anyway.
I may just do that before the weekend - thank you for the boot in the a$$

Hi Dan
I understand that thinking... and it makes sense if you are not sure about a particular domain name. I think that 'stargazingtonight.com' is excellent if it's still available!
:-)
Richard

Yes, that is a worry IF it is still available - well, if it isn't, I'll just have to hunt for another - serves me right for not buying the blessed thing as soon as I saw it.

Surprising that fishing isn't on the list. And I never thought of socializing as a hobby. You can socialize while doing a lot of the other things on the list.

I agree Neil - the absence of fishing was surprising, I can only assume it was a fairly tight selection of respondents.
Yes, you can combine socializing with almost everything else on the list.

Thinking about it Neil - the survey was taken in 2020 - the height of Covid's attack on humanity - thus, I guess, people were not allowed to go fishing as much as they used to

As far as I know the only state that banned fishing was Michigan where the governor decreed that even a single person alone in a boat in the middle of a lake was not allowed.

Here in Louisiana a lot of people never stopped fishing.
