We Just Had an Earthquake!

These two lights were swinging back and forth, over our kitchen counter, a few moments ago. We had a 4.5 earthquake. The epicenter was about 25 miles away. Because I was stting at my desk, it felt like someone kicked my chair two or three times. In California, we don't think much about these small quakes, but wonder, for awhile afterwards, if it will be followed by something bigger. By tomorrow, I won't even remember this quake until the next one.

It's not pessimistic to be aware that a strong earthquake is always possible. Its realistic. We have prepared, as we best we can, for something over which we have no control. We have supplies, chargers for phones, cooking stuff and a couple of places to stay if necessary.

An earthquake is just something that can happen in life. It can be expected but not predicted. The possibility of an earthquake does not change the wonder of living in a place where you can be skiiing in the morning and walking on a beach by sunset or gazing in awe at one of the oldest living trees one afternoon and the next morning cutting your suburban grass.

This little earthquake, reminded me that "stuff" will happen in 2021 as it did in 2020 both wonderful and scarey, miraculous and devastating. That is life. Life is good even though the circumstances sometimes don't seem to be. It kind of makes me sad to read that so many people are glad to put 2020 behind. I am thankful that I have survived the circumstances of this past year, but aware that another year has gone by. This is what my catch phrase means to me. As long as I can, no matter what the circumstanes, I am thrilled to be able to "keep on fishin'."

As someone who's a fifth generation Californian I know a lot about all of that. You. do get used to it but the big one will be coming one day.

After living the past 30 years in NY before coming home I'm willing to take the gamble.

Happy New Year!

Erica

We used to have them when I lived in Alaska, hurricanes when I lived in FL and NorEasters when I lived in NY. I didn't enjoy ANY of them but I think I finally found a happy medium with VA. LOL

CA IS pretty though. I've been to San Diego a few times and drove up the coast to LA. Nice drive!

You are right. Natural disasters happen pretty much everywhere. A bit of shaking is sure worth the life here. Happy New Year.

Just glad you're safe.

Thanks!

Drjec I have been through a couple serious jolts but nothing like the earthquakes you guys experience in Cali. While no one knows the hour of his/ her calling I would likely feel uncomfortable in a higher risk area such as this. Perhaps as you say I could get accustom to it.

It seems like everywhere is subject to natural disasters sometime. The climate here is worth the jolts. Thanks for commenting.

I hear you Jim

Glad it was only a 4.5, that should ease the pressure on the fault lines a bit. We have a lot here in Chile, but they are always a nerve wracking experience, I hope nobody was injured,

Have a great day.

Trevor

I always wait for the next one even after a little one. Thanks for reading and commenting.

Thanks for sharing! Glad it was not bigger! Good comparison on what to expect for the new year!
