About DocDoug
Joined October 2017
I've worked as a graphic artist and printer, I received my PdD in Semiotics and Critical Theory and taught at universities for over a decade, I left that to open a community coffeehouse which I just closed to return to design work. In 2002 I contracted a deadly autoimmune syndrome and have been battling to return to health. At this point I am healthier than before I got the autoimmune. My current interest and turn to e-commerce brings together my past training in design, university work in semiotics, and concern with health. As of Sept. 1 2017 I've devoted my time entirely to learning how to do business on the internet. I've found that the learning curve is somewhat insane, but its been the most enjoyable "job training" I've ever done.

Thanks so much for the follow, I'm following you back too :)

If you need some inspiration for your WA journey, feel free to check out my recent post:
I'm sure you'll agree, there's some awesome tools on here for Wealthy Affiliate members.
I use Jaaxy for all of my Keyword research and SiteContent to draft all of my posts for my website. Here's a little trick that will show you how beautifully these tools integrate and also SAVE you time:
Canva is also a great tool that's quite popular with other WA members, to design stylish graphics, like headers etc, for their websites.
Wishing you every success and feel free to drop me a line anytime!

Intriguing...it appears (if only by whimsical happenstance) I am being relapsed to theories contemplating what?... I think questions concerning "reason to existence", as recently I've listened to an interview with Stephen Hawking explaining his take-away on " Existence of God" and now you a PHD in Critical Theory. (which in definition only, I briefly researched as fodder for a new creative art piece I want to write) Indeed, serendipitous!

You have my attention, and intention for future comment...be brilliant,my friend
Reply
DocDoug Premium
Well that is intriguing. Much can be said about the reason for existence, but perhaps it comes to nothing at all? Hawking might agree with that. I have great respect for his work.

Oh boy...Critical theory would only further keep me up at night, restless and perplexed.
Hello Doc, and I must say that in looking onto your comments section below you are a very engaged survivor of this auto-immune syndrome and I have deepened respect for your state of positive strength in dealing with this for over 16 years.
I want to thank you for sharing this aspect of your profile as it is inspiring to read of your attitude.

I look forward also to read more of your posts as I learn a great deal in using the follow feature and enjoy the learning I get from others experiences and insight.

All kidding aside, the Critical Theory has me very intrigued of just what a degree in this entails and to what end. Great stuff for a movie I think...ok maybe just a little kidding.

I'm glad you are here! Respectfully, David

haha many people ask that question about Critical Theory. It covers a lot of mainly continental theories such as post-Marxism, deconstruction, psychoanalysis, postmodernism, Frankfort and other schools of thought. The reason is that we study the way that other areas of the university think, why they think that way and where their thoughts have come from. So I would teach mainly 4th year and some 3rd year classes - people heading to graduate school.

Thank you for your kind words about my struggle with my autoimmune condition. I certainly need to consider it in eveything I do. Working online is a good way to cut back the stress.

I don't think answer got to you so I'll say it again. Yes my wife and I have experiences in energy healing. The first time my wife is at our fruitstand.she gets a bad headache looses sight in the left eye and looses all feeling on her left side. I was not there, a stroke or her MS symptoms, with no hesitation go to the hospital. The phone rings it a friend of ours. He drives 4 hours to get to professor Wally Jays dojo in alameda. He goes on to say I have a guy here who can help you. We never met this guy. Within 5 minutes gets rid of headache restores her vision and all the feelings on her left side. That was august 2005.Gene came by the fruitstand to work on me . I think I blew him off? Anyway around new years a friend of our came by say you got to help me with her mother. My connection to her mother. Own the Baskin-Robbins ice cream in town. We'll the 20 years she owned it anytime anybody in our family went in to buy ice cream .She would wave them off.It didn't matter if it was a cake or gallons of ice cream.Well any way I told Jayne I'm s farmer what can I do. Then I had mention gene. So here we go to genes healing class.we ca talk along time for you to hear about the things I have seen. Ended up train with Gene to get certified. Thank you Doug

Ive been fighting it for 16 years. But its taught me so much about health. I credit my autoimmune for not getting cancer because now I know how to avoid it. Im also healthier than 20 years ago and do not take anything for granted. You have to find the positive in everything, even a life threatening condition.

Was helpping a old lady out repairing the roof on her barn. Rafter broke I fell thru it an broke my hip. All I used a computer for to play games and look up stock qoutes.is their a cure for your disease? Doug

Its called Polyarteritis Nodosa and Im a participant in a worldwide study of it. They've found 60 people still alive who have this. Ive had a few important breakthroughs - going gluten and corn free, ridding my house from all chems, bioidentical hormone supplimentation, nanotechnology anti-aging patches and a variety of toxic cleansing programs. This seems to have brought it completely under control for the past few years but I wouldnt go so far as to say Im cured. Fingers are crossed on that one.

Broken hip is pretty serious but it sounds like you are taking that bull by its horns -- good for you! I know it takes a lot of strength to rise above these things.

An auto immune disorder is it speeding up your metabolism bring on the aging process? What area do you live? Have you been to foreign country?what is activity energy and endurance like?
Reply
DocDoug Premium
It doesnt speed up my metabolism or bring on the aging process, but the nanotech patches provide an uptick in glutathione, carnosine and lower inflammation which help me control the onset of a flare and recover from it. I live in Ontario Canada. This autoimmune is full on or off. Im crippled with pain and quickly heading toward the big beyond or its like I dont have it. When it flares nothing will stop it but prednisone or death. I try to manage my life so that I need neither!

I'm actually having a ridiculous amount of fun. I have a niche that every tech giant corporation is set up to crush. In contrast, every techie who works for them is like, yeah man I've got a work around for you, I believe in your project! As Henry Ford said, don't appeal to the rich man who owns the building, appeal to the doorman cuz he'll get you into that building. Here's to all the little people getting stuff done!

Benchmark: Only 54 days with WA and 24 days Premium and I just broke into the top 500 Rank! Nice news to wake up to today! And its a big day because I finally feel that I have enough content on my site to start launching it on social media.

Feeling like there are so many posts to write, so much work to do, and its all so exciting! Not only that, but last night at the gym my angle for how to promote WA on my own affiliate site came to me. This is something I didnt think I would do cuz what could I possibly have to say about a community that I've only been a part of for 54 days?? That is going to be my holiday project and a little gift to myself for working so hard on my main site and WA training.

You are in the middle of something and you run into a technical glitch. It could be something you dont know how to do, or something that isnt working. What do you do?

If you post a question it could take some time for a WA friend to answer, and you dont have that time. You're in the middle of things and cant move forward without a solution. Well here's one thing you can try - Site Support. Go to your SiteRubix menu, hit Site Manager, and in the top right corner you will see site support. Your aim here is not to ask them a question, because you have no time to wait for the answer. Instead, when you start to type in some keywords that describe your problem you will see a drop down menu with articles and trainings related to those keywords. Search those for a probable answer. If you don't find one, fine tune your keywords to see what else comes up.

I have found several answers to problems this way. Yes its nice to interact with peeps here at WA, but if time is of the essence, cut to the quick and search this awesome data base of answers from inside your site manager. The process will also get you practicing how to think in keyword phrases which is helpful in itself.

Thank you for following me. I am glad that you are over the autoimmune disease and are enjoying learning business on the internet. I done a lot of work on the internet when I graduated from grad school, but I left it until a couple of months ago. A lot has changed in 10 years. I had not even heard of WordPress. Everything was in html and php code back then. It took a week to do what it only takes a couple of minutes now.

So I havent been a member of WA for even 2 months yet, but I just finished level 2 and wanted to give an update. Im within the top 1000 at WA which Im pretty happy about. Helping people is just second nature to me after spending a decade helping university students in my former profession. I didnt even notice that this activity was increasing my "helping" score. Nice to have that noticed after working in academia where such things are rarely recognized -- your on-line education beats the actual university system in this category Kyle and Carson, congrats on achieving that! Its no wonder I am here instead of there - lol!

Also I just got up on Google+ which is a big deal for me because I greatly dislike Google (this is said in a low whisper so that the rankings spiders can't hear!). Yes, its true. I'm not a fan of how invasive the platform can be but now that I've spent several hours dedicated specifically to my niche my opinion is turning around.

In the past I've preferred Facebook, but after spending several years on that platform I've come to appreciate the simplicity and transparency of Google+. What do I mean? Because of the increasingly complex algorithms employed by Facebook it is becoming difficult to reach even the people who follow you. Not so in Google+ where you can see your post in the communities and circles where you post it.

This transparency ensures that you don't feel like your work has dropped into the abyss, maybe to be seen by followers depending on how the platform assesses them, you, and your post. I've spent so much time learning how to "get around" Facebook so that my work might be seen by my own followers that it was like a breath of fresh air to not have to do this in Google+. Perhaps Google and I can still foster a relationship. It certainly helps that my site is already indexed but I think Im waiting to see a post ranked before announcing our formal engagement.

Amazon Bot Problem

I have been away for several days fighting with Amazon to get registered in their Associates program. The problem was the automated identity call which would not go through my Magic Jack phone number. I had 6 people at Amazon working on this simple problem and none could make it work. After much lost time and a lot of frustration, a friend allowed me to borrow their phone and she pretended to be me. Yes, I had to go so far as that to have my identity verified by Amazon. Clearly their system doesn't work, so just a heads up if you use Magic Jack and have to deal with an Amazon calling bot.

This glitch stopped me from posting my first blogs because the content was linked to Amazon products I could not actually link to, however now that its fixed I'm off to the races!

Ten day mark at WA and its going super well. Somehow my rank at WA has climbed to 1177 in that short time which I dont completely understand yet, but its good. I also have 100 followers in 10 days and this is a big shout out thank you to all you folks. Thank you!

I am very excited about what the next 10 days holds for me. I've never before tracked my life in such short increments. Certainly in the coffeehouse business it would take at least 3 months to see the effects of anything I did. Im super happy with the website thats coming together and plan on sharing it this week. And this is a big week for me because its when I start to add affiliations to my site. Up until now I've been a faux affiliate, an affiliate-wanna-be, but after this week I'll be a real life affiliate lol!

Here is one of the tshirts I designed and I'm working toward being able to wear it myself! Goals!!

Fabulous day on WA! I dont think Ive ever gotten so far in a single day. I set up my domain email, joined Twitter and Mailchimp with it, created an email subscription box on my website and the collection automation on the other end. Wow, my head is spinning with new information but its all good.

Funny thing is the site looks almost exactly the same as before all this work. Really, a lot of this is creating your back office, or back room, or whatever you want to call your management system. Its as important to design your back end as your front, and thats what has had me confused before WA. Approaching internet marketing from the starting point of a blog site just fits my niche and goals so well. While its true that keyword driven content is a brilliant idea, so is basing an online business on a blog format, and my big thanks out to WA for both.

And I even worked in some time to do the skeleton for my next post which Im really excited about writing! I hope other folks are finding their way here, its so wonderful to have a community to answer questions.

Wow only 4 days into this and its more like 4 weeks! Feeling huge gratitude every day to the vibrant community here. My first website is developing fast and of course taking on a life of its own that I didnt anticipate even 24 hours ago. I have much to say about niches and perhaps will do a training at some point.

As a former professor, the idea of a niche is like a student's idea of a thesis for a paper. Is it original? Are you asking a relevant question or addressing an interesting problem? Are you presenting data (products) that are already proven and can answer your question or problem? Is your topic (niche) so broad that you get lost and your readers get little out of it? Are you interested enough in the topic (niche) that you can write 10 pages (10 blogs)? As a prof I would literally say, reach into your heart and look for what is important to you -- it will be important to other people as well.

I have seen a good number of on-line Guru's trot out their rags to riches stories and I've always thought, yeah sure. Sounds good but this "you can do it cuz I did" story is getting tired. I stopped believing them. I am skeptical by nature, so the skeptic really kicked in. Except now its happening to me!

In a nutshell, I ran a tremendously successful community based coffeehouse in the worst part of my city. When I set up a coffee corner so I could drink as I renovated the space, people starting coming in and buying. My doors were not even open. Within 3 months I covered my expenses, was debt free before the end of 1 year and the biz just kept growing. Looking back I now know that its success was greatly aided by the email membership and monthly newsletter I ran. I had no idea of the power of the internet and used no social media, just email.

Then it happened, my landlord got greedy and tried to turf the enterprise which mired me in lawsuit. Then my partners got greedy and more lawsuit. Last month I closed the doors of that tremendously successful coffeehouse with no income prospects on the horizon. Lawsuits had financially crippled me, community was a bleak place, family was non-supportive, success blew from my hands like the dust that swirled on the empty coffeehouse floor.

So I tried to find the positive. I turned on the inspiring deep house music I love and started designing. I had been a graphic artist prior to the coffeehouse and art has always been fundamental to my being. Its that important. In September I started designing tshirts and had only sold 3 when I found @CathyLing s article comparing tshirt production/distribution companies. Ms. Ling's article led me to WA. I will be forever grateful for finding this awesome community! Thank you Cathy! I had to write out this whole story so you would know what this thank you truly means to me.

Hello Kathy, thank you for introducing me to WA. I found your site while researching on-line tshirt sales. I havent even really started the free training and Ive already learned something. Despite the instructions, folks are using profile pic of cars and pets and yes, it doesnt make me want to follow them. And that is how others would see my profile if I had gone that route, which I have in the past. Good lesson and also nice operational perk to get to see the mistakes that others make (though I am probably making 100 myself right now lol).
