Go-Getters - Heads Up!

I just logged into my site and half of my links had a strike through and the Broken Links plugin said they were broken. Not so, all worked but clearly the Links plugin itself was not working. Bo alerted us that the plugin might say that it doesnt work with our themes but it worked with mine until today. If you were doing the training and installed the Broken Links tracking plugin take a quick boot over to your site and make sure all your links don't have a strike through them.

I tried to tell the plugin that they were not broken but it was not having it. The plugin stood its ground, strikeouts littered across my site. Googlebirds circled overhead and in the near distance I could hear the low hum of the computer tower. Its gonna be me or you, I growled as I hurled myself finger first at the delete key. Seconds later the plugin was dust and my links danced free from those oppressive strikeouts.

Don't let this tragic situation be you -- keep an eye on that plucky plugin.

Thanks for the heads up. Won’t be using that plugin for sure.

Happy to be of some help Karen.

I had this issue too. Also, previously checking with Semrush, it noted over a hundred broken links. Yet, none were.

I also found that SEMrush dinged broken links that didnt exist. In fact I installed the plugin to find the broken links that SEMrush said I had and found nothing.

Thanks for sharing with us :)

You're welcome Nick.

Thanks for the heads up.

No problem. I love that at WA we can share our bad experiences so that other's don't have to go through the same thing.

Thanks for letting us know and laugh!

I wasnt laughing when I saw my site full of strikeouts, but afterwards I said, whew, disaster averted.

What an experience. Lucky you!

Hey wait you giving my name away now :)

Yeah, when I first saw the strikeouts I thought that Amazon or another of my more used retailers had axed my affiliation. That caused a minor heart attack. So I was relieved to find out it was just an errant plugin.

That is scary. I had it happen and know idea where to even begin to think of what was wrong. Glad it was an easy fix.

Some plugins are better left alone or on a test site for a while, Linser!

Cheers!
David

Good point David. I was surprised that it took this long to act up. I thought that plugins would either work right away or not. Apparently they can hang in there and act like all is ok until you arent looking then blammo, strikeouts everywhere.

Glad you won that dance! Thanks for the humor and the heads up.

You're welcome - got to keep your sense of humour when irritating things happen.

OO so very true!

Yeah Doug I went through all that and it's very frustrating, caused me a lot of problems.

Fortunately I logged in specifically to add a link so when I saw the tracker reporting a million dead links I thought, no way. something just went off the rails here. Scary though how quickly a stupid thing like that can torch your whole site!

Whatever happened caused me to lose all my google analytics info. and my site to stop getting hits. in google statistics.

Took me a day to realize it was broken links that created the strike through. Out of 76 supposedly broken links only one was really broken. If this app turns out to be a pain I'm uninstalling it.

I did. Boom, gone. I couldnt trust that it wouldn't take all my links down again as soon as I turned my head. Now I have to find another links plugin cuz that was actually quite handy -- while it worked.
