Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays or Seasons Greetings?

I had to go out and grab a couple of last minute items for a gathering at my home for Christmas this year. I won't say where I was or what I was getting but, I am now thinking about what went down at the location and I'm truly bewildered.
People were coming and going and most have a smile on their face or at least seem cordial and nice. I usually say to anyone I am in direct contact with, Merry Christmas! Not Happy Holidays or Seasons Greetings but, Merry Christmas. So yesterday I am checking out and as I am leaving say to the nice lady checking me out, Merry Christmas! That's all just smiling at her and saying Merry Christmas. Well, you'd have thought I told her to take a flying leap off a building. I received that 1000 yard stare from her as if she wanted me dead right then and there.
Like I said, I did not think a whole lot of it as I left because I had other things on my mind. Now that I think about what went down, I wonder why are so many people openly offended by the sincerest of greetings? For decades people come and go and say Merry Christmas without the blink of an eye, until now.

Something has been put into the minds of people to be upset, mad or downright nasty for what was once, a truly heartfelt and warm wish to your fellow human beings. I say this often and will again now, I miss the days when things were more simple and accepting for everyone.
I refuse to cave on this issue so, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all that wish to accept this honest and warm greeting of the season....
