Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays or Seasons Greetings?
I had to go out and grab a couple of last minute items for a gathering at my home for Christmas this year. I won't say where I was or what I was getting but, I am now thinking about what went down at the location and I'm truly bewildered.
People were coming and going and most have a smile on their face or at least seem cordial and nice. I usually say to anyone I am in direct contact with, Merry Christmas! Not Happy Holidays or Seasons Greetings but, Merry Christmas. So yesterday I am checking out and as I am leaving say to the nice lady checking me out, Merry Christmas! That's all just smiling at her and saying Merry Christmas. Well, you'd have thought I told her to take a flying leap off a building. I received that 1000 yard stare from her as if she wanted me dead right then and there.
Like I said, I did not think a whole lot of it as I left because I had other things on my mind. Now that I think about what went down, I wonder why are so many people openly offended by the sincerest of greetings? For decades people come and go and say Merry Christmas without the blink of an eye, until now.
Something has been put into the minds of people to be upset, mad or downright nasty for what was once, a truly heartfelt and warm wish to your fellow human beings. I say this often and will again now, I miss the days when things were more simple and accepting for everyone.
I refuse to cave on this issue so, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all that wish to accept this honest and warm greeting of the season....

Personally, there are graver issues other than whether or not someone wants to accept my "Merry Christmas. I understand that I can't possibly figure out what people believe just from meeting them for a few seconds. If someone prefers "Happy Holidays" over "Merry Christmas", I have no issues with that. For me to judge someone based on one encounter with them would not be Christ-like, so I make every effort to refrain from doing so.

One has to close one eyes to such action and make a renewed effort not to sink to the bottom. I believe such actions show society has sunk to the bottom of the barrell and we are now on our way up again. Perhaps the Millenials will lead the way and TRUST will be restored among individuals.

Merry Christmas, Dean! I have noticed that I've been hearing that instead of "Happy Holidays" more often this year, and I'm happy about that.
I agree with you wholeheartedly. And I think the problem lies with the person who refuses to accept a well meant, joyous greeting due to their own hangups, whatever they happen to be.
I had written a much longer response to your post, and realized that I'd written one of my own just responding to yours, so watch for a post from me.
