What Can I Eat

What can I eat.

A serious question.

Some days I can be absolutely on top form in the morning and then I will stop and make a nice lunch or maybe go to the KFC for chicken and fries, or maybe a Cornish pasty from the bakery. Other days I will settle for just a piece of toast or maybe make some carrot soup.

And I have noticed that some days I am still in full charging mode in the afternoon and on others I’m as deflated as an old balloon, all the energy has gone. Even a hot strong black coffee with extra sugar fails to re-activate my drive.

So my question is

And I’m sure I’ve read something about this, are there certain foods that we should avoid if we want to stay awake in the afternoon, I’ve heard that potatoes are one of the culprits . And is there an opposite food, one that we should definitely eat if we want to be as bright as a new button. I’m sure that someone once told me that bananas have this effect, or was it the opposite.

Anyway, someone out there in the WA community must have the answer. Someone must be clued up on diets and nutrition. Is there a food to eat and one to avoid, please tell.

And there may well be others amongst us that want the same answers, even if they don’t know they want the answers yet.

Please help.

Dave, when we eat a full meal in the afternoon, it's natural to rest, and digest.
I eat small portions, and stay clear of any sugar, except maybe at night.
Sugar causes a crash.
A good power nap of half an hour gives me my afternoon recharge.
If nothing, I refresh my mind.
Hope this helps, Dave.
Barb

It does help Barb, but I will definitely be eating Xmas lunch today.
Have a great festive break.
Dave

That's why they play football games on Christmas and Thanksgiving!
Nobody wants to do a thing after stuffing oneself. LOL
Turkey has tryptophan the sleep enzyme, so there's another energy drainer.
Barb

We have been lied to for so long about food, it is not surprising that people don’t know what is good or not.
I’ve seen some great responses below, but stay away from fast food. That will race you to an early grave.
Hope you work it out.
No sugar…please.Carbs in moderation..lol.

Stephen

Thanks Stephen.
Yes, I have printed all these replies off. I now have a reading list for my festive break. I fully intend doing some or most of this good advice and will keep everyone posted.
Cheers buddy

Hey Dave,

Recently, over the last 4+ months, I've lost weight (30 pounds) by changing my diet. I started eating better on August 8th.

I had the same thing happening, I would crash hard after eating on some days. I gave up carbs as much as possible and no sugar and the first 15 to 20 pounds came off quick.

I also added a healthy elixir that I make every morning:

1/2 lemon squeezed, 1 TBLS of organic extra virgin olive oil, 1/4 tsp ( I use more) Cayenne Pepper, 1/4 tsp Ground Ginger and I add a few squeezes of Raw Organic Honey.

I shake it good and drink it like a shot, it does amazing things. The elixir is from a doctor on YouTube, I follow him for his health tips.

Since doing this my bad Cholesterol is now low and the good Cholesterol is high, more than likely from the Olive Oil.

What was happening to me is what they refer to as a food coma.

It's an overabundance of Carbohydrates that the body can't process fast enough, so it goes into nap mode...lol

It makes your blood sugar levels rise which releases extra insulin causing the blood sugar to crash lower than normal. That causes the body to go into a state of lethargy, it lasts for several hours.

Potatoes, rice, bread, and pasta are all high in carbs. Surprisingly, many canned items are high in carbs as well, like certain soups.
I read the labels on everything now before I commit to buying.
Interesting stuff.

John

So interesting! Great job losing weight. It’s not an easy task!

Erlene

Very interesting. I have saved this. Watch out for my new diet regime after the holiday. So much information to process.
Thanks
Dave.

#1. Handle your stress by taking a simple walk in fresh air.
#2 Hydrate yourself through out the day with clean and pure water.
#3 Eat from fresh garden vegetables if you have it or buy from farmers if possible.
#4 Walk on earth surface as your daily exercise.
#5 Expose your bare body to Vitamin-D producing Sunlight or talk to your doctor if you need supplements for this vital supplements.
#6 I write my dietician recommendations of food to keep charged the entire day
5 meals-2 small and 3 big. Breakfast: eggs,, avocado, blue berries.
lunch : Plenty of salads consisting of leafy green vegetables, fresh cucumber, lettuce, carats etc which will cover major portion of the plate. organic well cooked salmon ~50 gm at least 3 days a week with a fist of cooked brown rice and some grilled veggies. Mid after noon snacks almond butter or peanut butter (1-2 tea spoons) with veggies., few roasted pumpkin seeds or mixed nuts.
Dinner: Soups, multi grain brown bread, grilled veggies.
This is just an example. which has helped me personally.

Have a great time, Dave.

Thanks Anusuya, I've had lots of recommendations and I've saved them all. I am definitely going to try some of your recommendations.
Thanks and have a great time yourself too.
Dave.

Dave,
What we love to eat may not always be what is best for our bodies. Our brains need nourishment, and many foods act as brain food. Some of the best are blueberries, fatty fish, nuts and seeds, dark leafy greens, dark chocolate, to name some favorites. Stay away from highly processed foods, sugary things (this is the one that kills me, I love sugar!), too much alcohol, and refined carbs such as white bread, white rice, pizza, bagels, and waffles/pancakes.

It isn't easy, but when I eat better, I perform better.

Thanks. It seems I’m eating from the wrong list. Perhaps I should post a blog series, Dave’s Diet. I’ve had some fantastic food comments here.

All the "whites" have a high glycemic index, meaning they raise blood sugar. Erlene ever read what the herb berberine does to blood sugar? It lowers it.
I got tired of the blood sugar rocket and crash, and walk around sleepy, while I let the sugar steal my energy!
Having to go gluten free due to Celiac Dermatitis Herpetiforma, Celiac's showing up on my skin with the worst itching where you tear your skin and get no relief, and it follows damaged nerve lines like shingles. I wake up. I woke up! Since wheat, barley, rye and oats only very carefully because of cross contamination of vehicles used to haul other grains and mechanical processes on shared equipment. Be careful or be very sick for 7 or more weeks for 1 mistake.
My life is forever changed. Good Earth tea needs no sugar. Stevia is a blessing, no calories, or glycemic rush.
I do weigh too much, but Canadian Roger Snow of hemp hearts has yeah, hemp hearts, it's embryonic!
That's a painless way to lose weight, I think. Hemphearts are unusual because it's 11 grams of protein per ounce. It's naturally balanced omega3,6, and 9's. So that and the high amount of protein of it mixed into hot cereal or toasted and added to breakfast eggs keeps a person from feeling hungry for many hours and your productivity is up, because you have energy. Mr. Roger Snow has a story about him dropping 100 pounds in about 100 days.
Anyway, Erlene, thank you. I hope you are doing well and that you have a lovely and Happy Christmas!
Suzay

Thanks for your follow up with my comments. I have twin daughters with celiac disease and I also have issues with wheat, just not celiac. I am glad you have a handle on your health and you are “in the know”! Take care Suzay!
Erlene

Erlene,
I feel for your daughters, if it's really bad when you can't wash your clothes with the rest of the family or they also have to give up synthetic fragrances, and use something like All Free and clear, palmolive unscented dish detergent, friends put away plug-ins with the scent stuff. Or when the pets eat barley-based food. I used to volunteer at a church food bank and we'd measure and bagged Blue Buffalo, etc., and flour for human consumption, then I'd have trouble breathing for a couple of days
It's all connected, usually a skin problem, acne, rosacea, dry skin in winter from eating more grain, eczema, and some form of lung problems, asthma, etc. all go hand in hand.

All I can say is read all labels carefully! I missed that Soy sauce has wheat in most kinds of it. I am a bonehead sometimes! Smarter lives better, longer, and healthier.

And there are better products on the market now for gluten free people. Canyon Bakeshop Johnstown, Colorado, in the freezer section, Daiya Pizza, freezer section is vegan but tastes very much more like pizza. Gluteno has a good pizza. I guess it's what you can get where you live.
Oh, time to sleep, good night dear Erlene,
Suzay

That's really interesting Suzay/Erlene
I'm lactose intolerant and as Suzay says, there is a need to check the food labels on every shopping trip.
It's a long story as to how it 'appeared' and even more surprising how I found out. But that could make another blog.
All I want to add to Suzay's comment about smarter lives better longer is that knowing I have a dietary problem actually makes me pay more attention to what I am eating and what I cook. I eat better than I ever did years ago even if I do slip back into KFC mode occasionally. I'm trying hard and January will see the launch of my renewed efforts.
I know I should try better, and I will.
I really do feel for everyone that has problems, there are so many pitfalls and traps that can catch us out.
Stay safe and healthy
Bux

All of your points are excellent. I am wishing that we (they) didn't have to deal with this, but I guess it could all be worse. At least they can educate themselves and do something about the issues.

I hope you are staying well!
Take care,
Erlene

Stay positive and be well, my friend!

Erlene

Oh yes. I ear carefully regarding lactose, just need to control my fatty food intake. Thanks. Bux.

Thank you, you are Awesome Erlene! Gluten makes me think of those stickers "not of this world" there is a gift of a lesson in every event where we have to slow down and choose a different road than everyone else. Maybe your twins will start a business or help others because of their point of view. Gluten-free means even cosmetics must be gluten-free. Garnier still puts out some hair products with wheat. Bakers may have contact rashes, rashes to put it lightly. There is still much need to solve these problems.
Erlene, do you cook for your girls? gfjules, gf is for you know what. gfjules email list is hundreds of recipes, of course, using her 1 to 1 flour mix.
OK, got to run, Suzay

Suzay! You are so incredible to share your wonderful knowledge. My girls live far away but we are always discussing recipes so I will check out the resource you provided!
Thanks and HNY!!
Erlene

Have a great beginning to the new year!
Erlene
