Thank you for visiting my profile! I am Clare, I have been self-employed since 1998, mostly working from home in businesses that I have created.
When I was in my late twenties I had an idea one day, after reading an article in the paper about a teacher shortage, that I would start up a teacher recruitment agency placing substitute teachers in local schools. As someone with no previous background in teaching, schools (apart from attending them), recruiting or how to run a business I decided to get started. How? Why? Because I had none of the self-limiting beliefs that come with age and experience. To my 20-something year old self, “I could do it”. So I did.
After I had sold my business, I took up Financial Futures Trading (for those interested, I traded short term interest rate futures as a member of the CME). Trading has many ups and downs but I loved the fast-paced nature, and the excitement. After eight years I very reluctantly gave this up. Why? Because I moved to New Zealand and could no longer trade the US hours (unless I wanted to work night shift).
So... if I didn't want to "get a job" - which I certainly don't, given that I've worked for myself for so long, I had to branch out into the shark-infested waters of the internet. After getting stuck down a few rabbit holes, I found myself here at WA. Having thought of myself as "quite good with computers" (i.e. I can help my dad switch his computer on, when he can't understand why he has a black screen), I realise that the internet is a huge and complicated behemoth, abound with opportunities and disappointments...
Thus begins my new chapter. Now to stop procrastinating, channel my 20-something self who had no thoughts of "failure", and get on with it.
I look forward to engaging with all of you here at WA.
