Thank you for all of your replies to the previous ideas, it really is greatly appreciated. It's not too late if you would like to respond to the Business Cards idea or the Donations idea, as I will be giving each of these about 72 hours before publishing the results. If you would like to find a list of all the ideas that have been suggested during this series, you can head on over to Marketing Ideas Research Series. So, next up, let's discuss Press Releases!

Press Releases

A press release can lead to lots of free publicity.

When a news outlet, such as Newspapers, Radio and TV stations, use your press release, you get free advertising that is usually hundreds of times more effective than paid advertising.

To get a press release accepted by the media, you need to cater to their needs, as they are looking for newsworthy information.

A press release needs to be written in a news style, therefore, you need to put the most important information up top, and the lesser information further down, very similar to the BLUF method.

Use a provocative headline.

Newspapers and radio have different styles, so ensure that you research print and broadcast writing styles before submitting.

You will need to issue a lot of press releases, as most will get rejected, but the more you submit, the more likely they will get used. Roope posted a good post that you can find here about this.

It helps to research other press releases that have worked, before you attempt your own.

Always submit your press release to a specific person, especially if you can find the editor for your niche.

It also helps to follow-up on your press release with a phone call.

You can also ask the editor what you can do to help make your news item more interesting, and also ask what their particular needs are at the moment.

If you help a reporter do their job, you will have a far greater chance of getting your press release used.
