Is the WA keyword tool inaccurate ?

Hi guys I have been using the WA keyword tool and I have been running into some trouble with it. Basically when I "dig" to find more targeted keywords I find loads with relatively high searches per month and low competition, but when I pick one of those kw words and put it back into the kw tool I am getting totally different results but except the competition stays the same. For example.

"where should I get a job" has 508640 monthly searches and a QSR of 110....but when I type that kw manually into the kw tool after I have found it I get...

"where should I get a job" now has 164 monthly searches and a QSR of 109...

Which is obviously massively different lol. Is it just a problem with the keyword tool or has anybody else had this problem before ? Because its just rendered about an hour of keyword research useless. Although its better to waste an hour and discover that the WA keyword tool isnt all that accurate sooner rather than later so not a total waste of time lol

Although this discussion was posted a long time ago, I'm now experiencing the same thing. For the last couple of days, I got really frustrated thinking that I had copied down the global traffic down wrong a number of times, only to discover that it is a BUG in the WA keyword tool. Somehow the figure for some keywords changes dramatically (in the thousands).

I'm trying to duplicate the error, but I'm not able to. Will keep you posted.

Hey Carson,

Yeah it was the exact keyword ? I cant remember the EXACT keyword I used and which keyword it was that I hit dig on but If you give me 10 minuets I'll run through my list of keywords (because I wrote them all down ) and see if I can remember the exact process I took the get these results.

But yeah basically I wrote my first keyword in then went down the list and found another keyword I hit "dig" on then found the above keyword in that list.

I'll go back through the process just now and see If I can remember give me 10 min :)

Chris

Been doing a bunch of searches here trying to reproduce this because it just doesn't seem possible the way that our data is structured in the database. If you're seeing a keyword pop-up with different search results then there would be definitely something I need to look into.

Hey Chris,

Something seems strange here. You're saying that the EXACT same keyword is giving you different results in the WA keyword tool? This should be impossible as our keyword database is normalized. This means that every keyword in the system has one value associated with it.

I see the 164 monthly searches for "where should I get a job" but where do you see 508640 monthly searches? If you could explain the exact process that gave you this issue I can investigate it.

Carson

Reply :d got it :D

Ok I couldn't remember the exact search term but I noticed something strange. I was messing about with keywords there to try and remember the one I used and typed in

"I hate my job"

When I went down the list I found a keyword "student part time job" which said it had 624240 monthly searches and a QSR of 335 so I took that keyword and plugged it in manually and got 8 monthly searches and a QSR of 337....

I done it again with the keyword "I hate my job what should I do" which had 4656 searches and a QSR of 97. When I plugged this keyword back in manually I got 121 monthly searches and a QSR of 97.

Try this: Type in "I hate my job" ( which is what I first typed in ), then scroll down the list to find a search term with high monthly searches and check the QSR. Then manually type that keyword in and watch the results change. That's basically what's happening.

Then I noticed that after I typed in "I hate my job what should I do" manually, I then went back to my original search term ( I hate my job ) and looked for that keyword and the monthly searches were as they were supposed to be ( 121 and QSR of 97 ) ?

I really don't know whats going on :)

Chris

Hey Chris.. I searched for "I hate my job". I see the keyword "I hate my job what should I do", it's showing as 121 searches and QSR 97. When I then search for "I hate my job what should I do" by typing it into the search box, I get the same searches and QSR. The thing is that every keyword has 1 record in the database.. it's not possible to show a different search value for the same keyword.

I followed your instructions too with another keyword.

1 - Did a search
2 - Found a keyword with HIGH traffic
3 - Typed it into the search (you can also "DIG")
4 - performed the search and the data is exactly the same as I would expect.

I'm still trying to break this so I'll keep you update on what I find.

Carson

If its possible, maybe you are getting the correct search results on that keyword

"I hate my job what should I do"

Because I already searched it in the "I hate my job" niche and plugged it in manually and got the right results and its maybe updated in the "I hate my job" niche because the keywords I tried it with all seemed to be updated in that niche when I went back to check them out. This theory might be completely stupid but its all I've got lol

Keep trying those outlined steps with different keywords because the same thing keeps happening to me. I think aswell the same thing would happen in all kinds of niches I try a totally different niche like weight lose of something and see what happens :)

Chris

Ok these are the steps I followed:

1. typed in "weight lose"

2. found the keyword "lose weight quickly"

( "lose weight quickly" had 27647 searches per month and a QSR of over 2M )

3. Typed in "lose weight quickly" manually

( this time "lose weight quickly came out at 50724 with the QSR the same )

4. Went back into "weight lose" and found the keyword "lose weight quickly" and it had updated from:

27647K searchers per month to 50724K searches per month. The QSR was the same both times.

Chris :)
