WA Day 3: Selecting My Niche, Questions and Comments

Day 3. For the record, no one needs to answer any or all of these questions. I'm just a mad journaler and I'm taking notes for myself so I know what questions to ask or to look for when I get to that phase. That said, please do answer the questions or comment on the comments if you are so moved! ;)

C1L3 - What's My Niche?

All this stuff is review for me but the BEST part about this is that I'm taking CLEAR active every single day. This is important! I've probably owned more than 50 different domains over the years but the way I go about it isn't the best. I like to come up with cool domain names loosely connected to a niche. I'll grab the domain, the YouTube channel, the Twitter and the Facebook of said domain. I'll start wantonly creating content and... it'll all fizzle out. It's always about stuff I'm passionate about, but I've learned (the hard way over the years) that it's really important to monetize this stuff somehow. Not just for the money I can put in my pocket either. It's the RESOURCES to be able to continue to help people, create better content and reach more people... to help!

Like I said, even though this stuff is really simple to me, the important part is taking a little time each to work on something in a focused manner and take so useful action! Wait! Let me brainstorm my niche... I'm not done yet!

I have a "group of people" I want to target, but I might as well begin my niche with personal development. It might not be the "best" one, but it's one I can endlessly create content for and it will get me taking ACTION!

There's a TON of advice on this site, but if you happen to read this, you're new and you're struggling to choose a niche, I'd say just choose something you're into and don't worry too much as to whether it's too broad or not. There are a lot of different things you're going to need to learn along the way and you can learn all of these things with any niche. You might get lucky and choose a good niche or it might be a crap niche, but at least you learned all of the other important things along the way!

Never forget!

The road to success is paved with failure.

Almost forgot to post this! I already had this all written. I thought I might have done a bit more today, but the day got away from me. Until tomorrow!

Questions and Comments

Video quality

OH! I was complaining about the video quality and just noticed that in the lower right corner there is Standard Definition and High Definition. It's set to SD, changing it to HD makes it way better! There should be a little note for that somewhere or the videos should just start in HD.

Is there a way to only see notifications from people I've followed?

It seems like there are a lot of people that follow practically everyone to get followed back "Twitter style". I already played that game 10 years when Twitter first came out. I'd like to see the content ONLY from the people I follow. There's already a way for me to see all of the activity everywhere. Some of the people are the right people and some of them are "random" people. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

Can I easily transfer the WA website to self hosting?

I imagine this is something really easy to do and something they even promote. I've already seen some links here and there about self hosting and since WordPress is the software being used it should be really easy to export and import a website. It's awesome that they provide all of this for newbie's though. It's rough trying to learn all of the technical stuff while trying to create content.

Unanswered have some VERY answered posts and some phantom posts.

I imagine this is some kind of technical issue. It looks like if I stick to things that aren't any more than a day old this won't be a problem. It also seems like I don't need to worry about posts going unanswered!

The real internet numbers

I just like numbers and I think of them often. This isn't a dig or a knock on Kyle! I just like numbers. In one of the videos 2 billion potential customers was mentioned. There are some interesting numbers about internet users. There are currently roughly 3 billion people online BUT...

  • about 1 billion of them are native English speakers BUT...
  • 53% of websites are in English BUT...
  • there are 700 million Chinese speakers and 300 million Spanish speakers BUT...
  • only 2.8% of website are in Chinese and 4.9% are in Spanish (of the top 10 million site) BUT...
  • no more buts BUT... lol

I'm on niche day and haven't really gone through the training yet. The point I'm making is that if you're bilingual or willing to work with native speakers of other languages there is A LOT more room for building niche websites! That's something I've always thought about. I'll learn this game in English, but I'll really quickly move to Spanish, Chinese and other major languages. I'm certain, for example, Spanish speakers that speak English do their searching in Spanish first and then switch to English if they don't find what they're looking for. I'm certain a lot of them can't even read English. Something worth thinking about.

You're even worse than I am. I buy the domains, but all the social media accounts too!!! We're definitely going to have to keep each other in line and moving forward.

I just updated my blog post... ...with answers to the questions I knew the answers to. I put them at the top since they seemed more relevant that what I had come up with. Speaking of which, how long did you sit there to get a picture with two of my posts in? Be honest you can tell me. :)

The only one, I didn't answer was transferring the site, but that's a fairly easy thing to do inside Wordpress. The only thing that might give you problems is the images, but if you ever need to do it let me know.

Glad to see you're still making progress. Keep it up.

Excellent job with the newbie notes! I did end up getting the questions about the website stuff answered with poking around the website today.

Took me about 23 minutes to get a screencap with two of your posts in it. That's why I know I'm perfect for this system! Endless patience. ;) lol

LMAO!!! Thanks on both accounts.

OH! About the domains... MAN! I used to get CRAZY with it. I'm going to take focusing on ONE at a time really seriously this time around. While all of the stuff I'm going through is "review", the FOCUS is not review. It's what I need.

I went to a large Internet Marketing convention once. Tickets were $2,500 a person (I won mine. lol) There were SO many good ideas there, but probably the best one I got was a guy saying.

People like to work on things like this ABCABCABCABC. Jumping around. What you want to do is AAAAAAAABBBBBBBBCCCCCCCC. Gonna put that in action finally! (I hope! >.

That's a great point. We can help keep each other on track. One thing at a time. FOCUS FOCUS FOCUS

You're right about sites in other languages than English, they are woefully underserved, however, the perception is (rightly or wrongly), that English speakers are the ones with the money. This is why there is a proliferation of sites by non-native English speakers trying to 'cash in' on the English speaking market when the fact is, they'd make more money if they wrote in their native language. I've turned off all email notifications from WA and just go looking for stuff via the Activity Dashboard pictured above. Great blog.

This kind of thinking came from my martial arts instructor/mentor. It's probably not like this anymore (to the same degree), but he once told me about taking tech skills to parts of the US where they weren't readily available. This was in the late 90s though.

A quick google search of the richest countries per capitca (which isn't necessarily the best metric) has the US at #9. The US has a huge population which changes things quite a bit.

I looked up the "richest people in Bangladesh", one of the poorest countries, and there are plenty of billionaires there. The blog I ran into was super sketchy, but what was funny about it is that there were a bunch of Bengalis complaining about the inaccuracy of the information. lol The richest people in [country] is a niche that clearly has a lot of room (I clicked on #4, a blogspot site, because number 1 was too slow). Also, HOLY SMOKES! The population of Bangladesh is 156.6 million! There are also 250 million native speakers. Time to brush up on my Bengali. ;)

The blog will get better when he goes premium. :) He has assured me he will when he's done riding this free thing to the bitter end. :)

So I definitely think translations into foreign markets is a good idea, but I'd also say English is probably the most common second language in the world, so the market is a lot bigger than US, Canada, UK, etc. And that second language thing is probably even more true for people with money that can afford the schooling. The only two times I've ever run into a problem speaking English was a port city in Brazil and dealing with locals in Iraq some of the time.

English is easily the most common language in the world (when counting people with English as a second language). And you're absolutely correct about people with money being more likely to be English speakers (it's true in in Taiwan). I'm just saying that there are some big markets in other languages out there which would probably be really easy to rank #1 on Google with quickly.

I'm sure this is true all around the world, but most websites in Taiwan are probably 5+ years behind technologically than they "should" be. I do searches in Chinese sometimes and it's practically always true with the sites I run into (them being behind the times).

This isn't something I'll concern myself straight out of the gate of course! Just musing of a mad man. ;)

Mel and I (that's onmyownterms if you didn't know already) were actually having a conversation along this lines in the comments section of his Translations are actually prevented by copyright law, but ideas aren't. There's a huge market just taking ideas that are only talked about in English and rewriting them in a new language.

And I do web design for small businesses. There's plenty of sites in the US that are a decade behind the times. :)

YES! The translation of ideas! And it isn't just into other languages. Translating things into other cultures, even just within the US, is huge. Switch up the vernacular, through a different face on it and BOOM a whole new market.

That's a big part of my plan as I get things rolling. Just translating stuff into different cultures. For example, the IM community is really "white washed". I don't mean that in a bad way, that's just the way it is. Taking all of the ideas and systems and repacking them another niche group has a lot of potential. The rough segregated lines in Milwaukee always made that clear to me. There's certain knowledge that almost doesn't even exist in parts of Milwaukee's north side. On that note...

Have you read "Influence: Science and Practice"? I HIGHLY recommend picking it up if you haven't. That ended up on my radar following a bunch of "top" internet marketers. I bring it up because the author, Robert B. Cialdini, mentions that he believes he figured all of that stuff out because he grew up in Milwaukee and was able to transition from neighborhood to neighborhood and being "fluent" in a range of cultures. It would have been even MORE true when he was growing up in Milwaukee!

I will add that to my list of 'to reads' (which is unfortunately very long at this time). I will be able to get back to reading once I move to my mountain cabin.

Mel, you didn't tell my you're moving to a mountain cabin. That's one of my goals, sort of. Not so much a cabin, but an off the grid house on the western slope of CO. How are you doing internet? Still haven't figured that part out yet.

It's in my stack of most valuable books. Didn't know he was from Milwaukee though. I think he was in AZ for a while. Have you read his new one Pre-suasion. It's even better. Talks about things that I've been researching for years, but puts in a very accessible way, and builds on some missing pieces of the other one in very important ways. I'm actually only half way through it, because the gears start turning every time I read it and I can't focus. :)

Going back to rap, music, I've actually seen some of the more successful rappers try to go back to their communities and do that. It's the minority that really figure out the business mindset, which is true for celebrities in general, but some of the ones that are trying to go back and tell the next generation what it really takes to become successful. Can't think of any names off the top of my bed, but it comes up every once in a while.

HA! This online stuff seems to attract a certain type of person! I've been researching off the grid living for a long time. Ran into someone, who's a buddy now, who's been researching it even longer! He used to be a contractor building buildings and the like. We made a few trips to Puerto Rico to look at land there. It wasn't his cup of tea, but I loved it! Now he's in Cali working as a site manager for this place where Indian Yogis live and do retreats.

Yeah, he works at the University of Phoenix or something, but he's from Milwaukee. I'll definitely check out his new book! Didn't know he had one. I'm going to order it from Amazon and pick it up on my trip back home (head back for two weeks on Thursday).

I'm up on a lot of the rappers that give back to the community. My favorite is Common. Google up the "Common Ground Foundation". That dude is dope. I should put his biography on that list too...

The book just came out in September, so not surprised.

I'm actually looking at building in Delta CO because it's one of the few counties in the US that doesn't do building permits and my aunt and uncle live in Grand Junction.

I'll check out Common Ground. I'm not huge into the rap scene, so I just hear about it passing. I periodically fall into groups that are into it, and find songs that I like but don't really follow any of it. Allow that's probably true for all the kinds of music I listen to. Absolutely love mosh pits though. Been to so many concerts at The Rave they were sending me free tickets to any shows they needed extra attendance to.

I'm sure you've heard it's been snowing here for the last 24hrs so be ready for that. I'm down with coming up to Milwaukee one day if you want to grab a coffee and shoot the s***. But I've also done the visit home for a few weeks thing many many times and know how busy it can be, so if not no worries.

Ah! That makes sense. I think we might be able to shoot the shit over coffee and that would be awesome! It's shocking how awesome this place got so quickly! lol

I grew up pretty much down the street from the Rave. That's one thing my buddy was always talking about. Stupid building codes making it hard to legally get the kind of structures up that you want to do. I think that becomes less of an issue as you get more remote.

I just threw that book in my Amazon cart. Immediately after I did that the thought came to mind of a book list of some kind being setup within these walls somewhere. No rush though of course! Just another thought...

Once I understand my schedule better I'll shoot you a message. I'll be able to PM by then. I've actually been living in Iowa the last few years. I ended up becoming a personal assistant for someone there as my last random job. She actually bought my ticket back so I could help her with stuff some more. lol She bought it before I even left!

Ha! I was born in Ames, Iowa. This place gets smaller and smaller all the time. I do have a blog with my top 10 recommended book.

Nice. I've driven through Ames on my way to Des Moines. ;) My mom and grandma are from Osage, IA. It's north and east of Mason City. That's actually where I'll be spending the bulk of my time during my trip home.

This last 4 years in Iowa were really awesome for me. I'm bipolar, what I would call the "good" kind. I've always been used to zipping around, trying to do a million things on and off line, etc. Those last 4 years in Iowa I really embraced the slower pace of life and solitude (I totally disappeared from the internet for a year and a half). It's a direction I've always wanted to go and it felt good to finally embrace it.

Iowa is an awesome place. The lady I worked (still work really) for was pretty political. She threw a party earlier this year and I got to meet the Governor. I imagine you heard the news of him being the Ambassador to China. Crazy! lol

Not really, we left Iowa when I was 2, and I've honestly never been back there. Maybe some day.

LOL what can I say. I know how to make a guy feel at home. :) I'm actually waiting for my training hold to expire. I'm going to have even more fun when I can start putting up training on all the fun toys I play with.

Delta, CO is the only county in the US that I've been able to verify for sure doesn't have building permits. I found a list of about 14 at one point, but some of those had changed and the others I can't verify.

A book list would be a good idea. I have more core list of books I use for reference.

Tickets back were always one of my problems with living in South East Asia. I've seriously considered Columbia as an alternative.

Sounds good. My schedule is generally free. Occasionally I have scheduled commitments, but generally most of my commitments are do when I feel like.

If you've never been, check out Puerto Rico. I got into a complex visa mess when I left here the first time and never wanted to dance with visas again! lol The cool thing about Puerto Rico is you don't need a passport or visa as an American citizen, has beautiful beaches and weather, you're in the same time zone as back home and a round trip ticket is pretty consistently around $400, sometimes less.

I didn't really even understand what Puerto Rico was until I went in 2014. I just knew it from cellphone fine print (all 50 states... and Puerto Rico. lol)

LOL. That might work. I know their economy is in collapse, so it's probably really cheap right now.

In the Americas, I've been to Mexico, Canada, Dominica, Brazil, and the Bahamas. I'm pretty sure that's it. I have friends that have spent a lot of time in Columbia, which is why I've always considered it. Puerto Rico may work better though.

I'll have to see where I am in six months. It's hard to say where I'm going to be living any farther out than that. :)

Yeah we have to steer away from that topic. Politics are a no no here and you get anywhere close to it, I'd have a hard time resisting. :)

Mel, I'm seriously picturing you going all Walden Pond at your cabin and never coming back out. :)

Shhhh, you're not supposed to tell anyone that.

LOL. OK Ok your secret is safe with me.
