Which infection may be causing nasal congestion and hacking cough in so many?
Hello;
I have seen many people, especially children, with flu-like symptoms and decided to do some research on the fact.
Here is what I found:
Many people are experiencing nasal congestion and a hacking cough, which could be caused by the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV).
The HMPV was first discovered in 2001 and can cause excessive chest congestion, fever, and shortness of breath. The CDC reports that there has been a 36% increase in positive HMPV tests this spring compared to pre-pandemic numbers.
This infection has similar symptoms to Coronavirus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). While the number of Coronavirus and RSV cases has decreased this spring, the number of HMPV cases remains higher than usual. HMPV can cause respiratory illness in people of all ages and can lead to bronchitis or pneumonia in severe cases.
The estimated incubation period is between three to six days, and the course of the illness can vary in severity. Although there is no specific treatment for HMPV, healthcare professionals encourage regular handwashing, covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing, not sharing food or drink, avoiding kissing, and staying home when sick.
Please contact your physician, if you are experiencing flu-like symptoms. Your Dr. will do the proper evaluation and proceed accordingly.
Thank you,
Lisa
