About Calypso47
Joined May 2015
I am a 75-year-old teacher-librarian working in a secondary school in Sydney, Australia. I retrained in teacher-librarianship when I was 70, after a long career as a classroom English teacher. I have been a registered nurse, journalist, co-owner of a mixed farm, academic and teacher. I have had a fair amount of my writing published -- short stories and poetry in literary journals from 1974-1990 -- and in the 1990s two novels, now out of print. I am passionate about reading, classical music, opera and travel.

It has only recently, oddly, that I am addicted to flying in aeroplanes and that I am equally addicted to travel. Only a few 'bucket list' travel experiences left for me now: Iceland, Patagonia and Antarctica. Haven't visited Africa and might not do so. Only interested in Botswana.

I have been having a little holiday from my computer. I use these machines so often (work, for example) that there times when I want nothing to do with them.

I have been staying interstate with my youngest daughter, as our family weathers its first Christmas without Samantha, my eldest daughter, who died of breast cancer (it had catastrophically invaded her brain) on 22nd June, when I was in a JAL plane somewhere over Russia. Got to London 6 hours too late.

Other family members went to a special, secret place in Thailand, where Sam and her husband Damian and the three kids had been holidaying annually for some years. It was Sam's wish that her ashes be scattered there, and from the pictures, it was a beautiful family ceremony at sunset. It was a party I did not want to join because I could not cope with seeing the ashes of my first baby daughter.

That is all finished and now it is a new year. My Samantha would say: 'Mum, get a grip. Get on with things.' And that is what my plan is--for WA and my writing, and librarianship--while I keep striving to be the best mother and grandmother that I can be.

I trust that all at WA have had a refreshing break and that 2017 will bring stability, success, peace and love to all of us at WA.

Maggie, I was reading Steph's bit on Gene Wilder and found your comment there. Boy are you a wonder. And I love your attitude. Never stop living and keep learning and having adventure. Hope I can do the same thing as I am sure I would be totally bored not doing so.

I had a look at your words and music site and am trying to leave a comment. Apparently I am entering it too fast. Well I know I was fast but to out speed Google is amazing.

So if it doesn't work next time I will try again later.

It worked so all is good now.

Thank you so much, Helen! That's lovely.

Have a look at my lovekidslibrarybooks site, too. That's the one I am most active in. (BTW, it IS all right to end English sentences with prepositions. Churchill famously ridiculed this with: 'Madam, this is something up with which I shall not put.'

Oh--Calypso. :) No, not the great music--a n association from childhood. Read my blog post, 'Why I call myself Calypso47'. I do have British connections--my former husband is English and has returned there. My eldest daughter married an Anglo-Irish man and they live in London with their three children. I visit there frequently because my daughter, tragically, is in the last stage of an 8-year battle with breast cancer.

I returned from London a week ago today, and returned to work yesterday. My head is far, far away and I have to focus. I pretty well absented myself from WA when I was away--mother-daughter time was a priority, since we have no idea how much longer she'll survive this dreadful thing--cancer--that she has battled now for 7 years She has chemo every week--for the foreseeable future. Hi. I come to London often. In fact, I have lost count of the number of times I have been there since 1996. This will be my third visit this year. My eldest daughter and her husband and kids live there. My daughter has been battling cancer for 7 years, so it's important to be there this Christmas. As for cold--I LOVE it. The cold in England is really quite mild compared to the -25 I experienced in Karasjok, Norway some years ago. :) As I have been telling people for years, if I had the money, I'd fly north every year for the entire Australian summer. I HATE the heat and humidity. LOL

Wow!... So you practically live here then lol

Do you think that it would be more easier If you bought a house here, I'm sure the amount of airlines fees spent since 1996 you could of purchased a small apartment for yourself here? lol

Sorry to hear about your daughter, I wish her a speedy recovery! So how many children do you have?

What part of Australia you from, and what is the temperature over there now?

My daughter and her husband have a house that is big enough for me to stay in. And because I never visited the UK when I was married to my English-born husband, I cannot stay permanently. And I am 74 now, so couldn't work in the UK, or use the NHS. Not an option. Had I come in the 1960s, I would never have left. Anyway, I have two other daughters and a son in Australia: one in Melbourne; the others, like me, in Sydney. Not a hot day today. About 25.

cool.

It seems you have travelled many places in the world, you have been most fortunate indeed.

I have a question for you, out of all the places you have travelled what has been the most memorable and why?
Reply
Calypso47 Premium
Hard to say which was most memorable, because there have been so many. Here are a few. In a small group led by a local, walking along a frosty path on the edge of Loch Ness on New Year's Eve, with a huge moon in the sky. Then sitting on one of Loch Ness's headlands, around a fire, drinking whisky toddies and eating Sainsbury's mince pies and telling stories. Then there was the bus trip from Rovienemi in Finland to Karasjok in Norway, thence to Hammerfest for a couple of nights before boarding the MV Hurtigruten for a 4-night voyage down the fiords of Norway to Bergen. And my rail trip from Sydney to Alice Springs and on by bus to Yalara near Uluru. Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta (The Olgas). There is something creepily spiritual about this very ancient land that should never have been stolen from its wise, indigenous inhabitants. You can FEEL it.
Reply
Diamonds007 Premium
I guess it would be extremely hard for you, as you are well travelled. I must say I am liking the sound of the whole setting of the Loch Ness, it seems the whole mood was perfectly set, I wish i was there :,(

So let me ask you something, throughout your whole travels around mother earth, what would you say is the one thing you have learnt which will stay with you for the rest of your life?

Hi Calypso,
I would be more than willing to help but I don't know what page you are referring to...
Would you be able to provide a link?
Reply
elsie919 Premium
Hi Calypso,

thankyou.

I have a few things to mention about your post and site.

Firstly, I noticed that your affiliate image isn't working because you are using the iframe code they provide. Unfortunately, this iframe is NOT compatible with Wordpress themes. It just doesn't show up.

My best suggestion would be to go to the Amazon product and choose the image only code, then insert it into your post. Also, you could state in your review that the cheapest place to buy it is at Amazon, and then link the word Amazon to the product page.

About your site, you should remove the Sample Page still in your menu. Also, navigation is difficult. Is this post the only post so far? Perhaps create some categories and add them to a menu like you would pages, and they will show up in the menu on your site. That means when you write a review, you can put it in the Review category, and when you click Review in your menu, all your reviews will appear on one page.

Hope this helps, feel free to ask for any tips, and I'll do my best to help :)

All the best,
Elsie

Also, I thought I would add one of my own little mottoes.....

Become great at one thing - not mediocre at seven things.

It's great you are delving into the training and creating so many sites, but trust me when I say that it is possible to spread your self too thin.

If you want people from Google and internet searchers to take your site and your content seriously, you will need to put effort into that site.

I would suggest focusing on one or two sites only - this will leave you with more than enough work to do, trust me! It's not about creating tonnes of sites to get people to buy stuff - they won't. If your site is poorly kept, or unfinished, or with very little content (less than 50 articles), then people will most likely not click on your ads. Google will also punish you if you do not create engaging original fairly frequent content - you just won't show up in Google so no one will find you.

Just something to consider - Throw all that energy into making one site GREAT!! One site is really all you need.

All the best,

Elsie.

As your comments have been so helpful, I wonder if you'd mind having a look at http://www.delveforbooks.com/ This is not a WA website--I have been doping this via another training/hosting site which is super-expensive. I had nearly 4,000 hits on it in August. I have never once made a sale. Some rels & friends who have tried it tell me the Amazon links do not work. I have no way of testing this unless from my own perspective--from which I cannot detect any problem.

Hi Calypso,

Sorry for the delay. Been a bit busy. :)

I looked at http://delveforbooks.com and have a few points.

Your homepage has too many affiliate links and banners in my opinion. I feel like you are just trying to sell me stuff.... affiliate linking should be simple and clean and sometimes it can be subtle. Too much can ruin formatting and a clean look for your site. Some of your ads also seem completely unrelated. This is ok, say for one that you title as a Sponsor, but if it is inside an article or page like your home page and is scattered throughout the article, it confuses people. Perfume, vitamins, ipads.... I thought I was on a book site. Do you see what I mean?

I would suggest refining your ad selection and make every single one you keep count.

Also on your homepage I noticed you have introductions to types of books, and for some of those types you actually have a page dedicated to them. It might be nice to make those introductory titles link to the page you have dedicated for that type. For instance, you have on your homepage a subtitle and paragraph Crime Fiction. You also have a page called Crime Fiction. Why not link from your home page to your Crime Fiction page? Make it easier for the reader. :)

On your Cook Book page, you have some misplaced code up the top. Just a note, I notice it's something you got from your computer. Before anything can be published on Wordpress, it must be uploaded to Wordpress so it can always be accessed online.

Your back-to-top link is a great idea. Just make it work for every section on your page however. Consistency is good.

On your Crime Fiction page, select all your text and re-select your chosen font and size. There is a difference in between some paragraphs that shouldn't be different.

On your Classic Fiction page, your image is too close to the text... Try to fix this if you can. Image formatting can be a pain, I know. There are also a couple of punctuation errors.

On your Childrens and YA page, the picture needs fixing again. Actually, just double check all your pages and make sure the images have padding between them and the text.

Why not add an About Me page to this site as well? It can be the same as your other one. Also a Privacy Policy page.

Sorry if this is too much haha. Hope it helps. All the best,
Elsie

Margaret, I see you are making some good progress through the Affiliate Bootcamp. Just wanted to pop by and see if you need a hand with anything?

I also wanted to mention the success rates of Bootcamp. Absolutely everyone that has taken action on all of the phases of Bootcamp has a business that is generating consistent income online. MANY of these folks are going to be at our super affiliate conference next year.

I want this to be you and I want you to succeed with your promotions. So, please promise me that if you ever need a hand or feel stuck as you move forward, that you will get in touch with me!

Trust me, I know things can be a little overwhelming sometimes and I don't want you feeling like that.

Anyways, just checking in. Get back at me if you need anything Margaret.

Thank you, Kyle! I'm trying to do as much as I can now that I have my internet restored. Today is a bad day, though. My eldest daughter (aged just 48) has stage 4 breast cancer. She lives in London: I live in Sydney. In 10 days I am going over there again (third visit in a year), and this morning came the news that she has been admitted to hospital with an infection and poor hydration. I have a lead weight in my belly.

Anyway--I do think I am a bit stuck. I have created a few websites--and I have one that is external to WA. Long story there, and I'll find time to tell you about it one day because I feel it has the tinge of scam about the website people. Have you heard of a crowd (in America) called Dynamix7? They had the cheek to ask me for $11,000 to get access to eBay sales. I have already parted with $6.5K and they are not getting another cent. I had nearly 4,000 hits on the site in August and not one sale.

How do I put html links on the WordPress site? I am part of several affiliate schemes in Australia and would like to put the links there.

Must go. Have an appointment in the city. And thank you SO much for calling in.

--Margaret

Sorry to hear about your daughter Margaret, I can't imagine what you are going through and my thoughts are for you and your family.

RE: the program you joined.

That is an absolutely scam Margaret, any company charging that sort of money is in the business of taking money from others versus helping people.

I am so sorry to hear about this and I would do everything you can to get a refund for that. You may be able to recoup it if you contact your CC.

Anyways, move forward with what you learn here at WA. You are going to learn how to properly build a business here at WA within any niche.

Also, I noticed you are on a monthly membership. You can upgrade to yearly and save a bunch of money.

You can upgrade to yearly now that you are a monthly member ($359 per year, which works out to $29 per month average). You will see the "Upgrade and Save" button within the main menu (red button) or you can visit this page directly to move to a yearly membership.

https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/upgrade

The yearly membership will be pro-rated, meaning any extra time you have left on your current month will be applied as a discount to your yearly membership Margaret. :)

If you have any further questions do let me know.

PS. I hope you are having an awesome week thus far!

Hi Steph!

Great to meet you here! I am somewhat gobsmacked that you are doing WA full time after only three months. I must admit that, if I had a truly reliable income to match what I earn now ($93,000 p.a.), I would do it full-time as well. If there are some particular secrets I need to know, please tell. :) I am slowly getting through the training, but--with full-time work and the looming complication of moving house on 14th August and all the packing and culling that has to happen before then, I am not confident of getting it all done quickly.

I'm not greedy, by the way. I messed up my finances big-time a few years ago and needed to go back to work. I was blessed in that I was able to do that. There is no age discrimination in the NSW Education Department. And in the last 7 years, I have spent an enormous amount of money on international travel. My eldest daughter, who will be 48 in three weeks' time, has Stage 4 breast cancer. She was living in Singapore when she had her mastectomy, and I was there a day later. Just over a year ago, she and her family (her husband is English) moved back to London. There is only so much long service leave I can use, so I cannot do any more than stay for short times. I'm sure you can appreciate what a blessing it would be for me to be able to make enough income to stay in London for longer periods--and to pay back my ailing credit card(s) for all those trips!

So--any tips will be appreciated!!

Have you read any of my blogs?

Cheers,

Margaret

Hi Margaret:

The only advice I can give you is to work hard. I already had skills in web design before joining WA. As a high school librarian, I used to teach web design, so I was able to transform those skills into developing training here at WA. I just started doing that as you need to be member for three months before doing so. It is listed here:

https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/stephhill/training

I can appreciate your situation as having a daughter w/ stage 4 cancer. My father recently passed away from heart failure and I had to quit my two jobs (teacher and librarian) to move here and take care of my mom and help pay for all those expenses associated with hospitals and funereal costs. My father had no life insurance and my mother is passed retirement age. So here I am. :)

If you've created a new website and want to import existing WordPress blog to the the new one. Here're the steps:

- In your exsiting WP blog go to Tools - Export and choose All content. Then Download the Export File.

- Now, go to your new WP. Click on Tools - Import and click WordPress. Then, all you have to do is just Import the Export file you've just downloaded.

Here's is the walk-through video. Watch the video first. There's something Kyle explain before and after doing the importing stuff. Hope this help =)

Thanks, everyone, for the welcome. I wish I had the time, this week, to really get going with this--but, since I open our library at 7:30am and rarely leave school before 4:00pm, there is not a lot of time during the week. Clearly, things don't happen overnight.
A question/comment: I find the videos difficult to hear--even with my computer's speakers to the maximum, ditto the source. In any case, I am more comfortable with text. Is there a solution? Many thanks.

Not sure if any of the videos have been transcribed yet. I would maybe try headphones?

Would that magnify the sound from the computer, though?

Yes, you can get headphones that do that :)

Hey Margaret,

I forgot to mention the other day that I am going to still be offering you my awesome bonuses if you join within the next 4 days.

Here are the bonuses that you are going to be getting:

(1) You are going to get a 59% discount on your first month Premium membership (only $19)
(2) You are going to get personal and private access to me! If you ever have a question or need help with your campaigns, I will be there. Where else can you access the CEO of the company for help?
(3) I am going to be giving you my "Diamond Traffic Bonus". This is going to show you how I walk into absolutely any niche and get unlimited traffic.

But only if you join in the next 4 days (this is what I call my "action takers" bonus).

Anyways, just wanted to mention this. Hope your training is going well Margaret and Reply to this if you do have any “pending” questions. :)

I noticed you haven't quite finished setting up your account here at Wealthy Affiliate, and just wanted to let you know you'll get better help within the community if you do. People feel as though they can connect with you better if you have a profile image and description filled out.

If there is any confusion, here's a video on how to set up your account: Just wanted to pop in and make sure everything was going well for you. If you do need any further help with anything Margaret just drop me a comment. :)
