Why am I failing to make money doing online marketing?

I have been with Wealthy Affiliate for over a year now and I have not made any money. Can you believe that? I am ashamed to say this but it is true. It is discouraging and I had to stop and check on why this is happening. Is it only happening to me? I can see that others are, and have made money after a few months. What’s going on? Is there a conspiracy? I had to retrace my steps to find the answer.

Part of my problem was that I came to Wealthy Affiliate with some prior knowledge. This was partly my downfall. I had learnt to build a website and other related stuff from many of the internet geeks. Some of these varied with the instructions given by the Wealthy Affiliate coach in the training. Knowing how to do some things made me sometimes skip sections of training I thought I knew.

Lesson No. 1 – Even if you feel you know what the Wealthy Affiliate training is offering. Make sure to run through the training to ensure that you know all the aspects the training is providing. This is to ensure that you do not leave out any aspects of the training provided.

Another reason was I was in a hurry. When I came to Wealthy Affiliate I was like a beggar invited to a buffet where there were piles of goodies. I couldn’t help myself. I had scraps for so long that I now tried to eat everything my eyes set upon. I was like a madman running from one dish to another.

Lesson No. 2 – Yes we want to make money online (if possible immediately!) The tools and the knowledge provided but “Rome was not built in a day”. Manage your expectations. Others who are making money have been at it for some time. Let’s build one brick at a time. Take time to build your foundation. If your foundation is weak then you may falter at a later stage. This is because you had not covered some aspects of the foundation which may be critical.

Another major problem I faced was establishing the niche that I should delve into. Here again I had information overload. I am reminded of my days when I played soccer for school. The teacher who trained us drilled and shouted instructions. I was a beginner and had to listen to what he was shouting in the games against other schools. I focused on his voice and was able to do well. When I listened to somebody else in the crowd or my team mates I made major blunders.

Lesson No. 3 – Listen to what your Wealthy Affiliate coach is telling you. You can’t go wrong. Turn off all the noise from outside telling you what you should or should not do. Do what your coach is telling you. Explore your interests and your passions. Do what you know and can do. Find what people need and want in those areas. Going with the niche you are passionate about will go a long way.

I found that I had to clear these clogs to make way for me make progress. This is a journey and I am determined to plough on until harvest time.
