Spam Comments - What To Do?
Hello to you all! Hope you are all having a good day. Today I just wanted to reach out to the community to share a small problem that I am having.
I Have been running The Make Money Online Zone website for a few years and I love to get comments on my posts from genuine readers. Normally comments are a good thing, but lately I'm getting some really annoying spam comments!
I know that Security here at Wealthy Affiliate is pretty good and I understand that spammers are very good at what they do too. So just to clarify, I'm not having a go at anyone here. It's just very annoying!
Take a look at this...
I'm receiving HUGE spam comments that take up 2 or 3 pages of text. The one you see in the image above was about double the size you can see in the picture. Of course, I'm not allowing these onto my website. On average, I will maybe receive 5 or 6 of these per day. Today I received 12! I believe they are written in Russian.
Now, I know we have spam filters which they are clearly getting past. But I also know that you can blog spammers by putting their I.P. address in the discussion area of WordPress...
However, blocking the I.P. like this just sends the comment to trash and doesn't actually block the spammer. But here's the real pain... The spammers just keep changing their I.P. address so I can never stop them!
I just wondered if anyone else had experienced this problem? If so how did you deal with it?

Haha! Yeah, I know what you mean! I always think its nice to get genuine comments, but really annoying to deal with the spammers.

I hate that too. I get them all the time but you can just delete it. I do that and do it quickly a possible so that Google doesn't crawl the sites that people use to try to rank for their spam/scam sites.
Sometimes its a bot, (hate those too).
SiteSupport did say its just spam and tells me delete it, not approve. I get the same thing on my iPhone. All spam text messages one that I hate the most is x rated stuff. Yeah, they come through in spite of the Robo Killer Text Killer, and Spam filter through my mobile carrier. Those spam messages still find a way to weasel and slither in.
Ticks me off. Delete them every time. One of the most boring annoying task to do everyday.
Yes you are right! Very boring and very annoying. Yeah, there is very little that we can do. Although I do keep copying the spammers IP address into the Block section of WordPress. And actually I have to admit that I may have got on top of it at the moment as there are no spam comments today! Woohoo!
It just amazes me how these people get through all the spam filters. I mean the ones that I were getting are HUGE and absolutely full of dodgy links! They couldn't look more spammy if they tried! Haha.
Anyway, just one of those things that we have to deal with. Thanks for your input!
Sure. Maybe I should do what you do the ip address and put it in block session in WP. Most of mine comes through email. Glad it works out for you. Keep doing what you are doing. Hope those spammers do not come back.
I have a MacBook Pro and read the other day about a malware that asks for ransom paid through bitcoin. It blocks you from accessing the Mac OS. I was a little freaked by that. I do have a malware software that will detect it so in these days there is just about anything goes.
I did get a similar spam email threatening to shut down my webpage and asked for ransom paid in bitcoin and I just deleted it. I might be a blondie but I am sure ain't dumb!
Wow-- spam on steroids. I would check with site support and see if they can help prevent further issues.
Wow, that is a large chunk of spam there Andrew. I thought all comments had to be approved, so those type could be removed easily.
Its what has happened when I have outside comments.
Have you asked site support for help?
Beyond that I have no idea, sorry.
No problem. Yes, they do have to be approved. But I would like to block these scammers before they manage to send anything. Just wondered if anyone else had any issues wit this.

The same thing has been happening to me more too, but coming from the contact form on my site. I've been receiving more and more X-rated email promotions and it is beyond annoying. I just delete them and try not to waste my energy getting mad about being unable to stop them.
