A journey of 1000 miles begins with the first step is an ancient Chinese motivational proverb that expresses deep insight about determination to reach one’s goals while avoiding procrastination. It means a first step is needed if we intend to finish a task on time. Or my favorite way of interpreting it is an explanation that says great things commence with simple beginnings. If an initiative is taken, the rest of the venture falls into place.

These powerful words have been used through the generations in poems, songs, literature, autobiographies but for the purpose of this article, I’m applying it to building an online business.

Why Does This Matter to You?

To build an online business does require some up front hard and consistent work. You need to develop some marketing skills, make some tough decisions and you must put on your techy hat (unless, of course, you can afford to outsource it all). It can be a daunting task if you let it and sometimes it feels like trying to put together a 1000-piece puzzle. But if you stick to it, walk that journey of 1000 miles, the end result will be worth it. Take that first step now and never look back. Just like the saying goes, ‘It seems impossible until it’s done’.

Do you want to be successful in business and life? If so, you must start making plans and carry them out. Waiting and doing nothing will not create success and will not help you achieve your goals. You must act now for there is no such thing as the “perfect time”. The best time is now. One of my mentors used to tell me, “In a year from now you’ll wish you had started a year ago. The time is going to pass anyway; might as well get something out of it”. And he was right.

The Difference Maker

Once you take the first step you gain confidence and your motivation to succeed comes alive. But the most important and number one recommendation I can offer you is to find a business partner. In full disclosure, I myself had procrastinated for several years until I recently found the perfect business partner for me. I knew all along I needed one and I had searched for quite some time but when I found that person, the magic began to happen! I feel so motivated now to walk this 1000-mile journey because I’m not walking it alone. We discuss ideas for our business, set goals, and decide how to accomplish them. Having a biz partner also creates accountability. If we create a to-do list with each other for the business, then I feel obligated to get it done. I must fulfil my commitment to my partner to do my part in advancing our business venture. We need to trust each other. Besides, we have big goals to reach!
