Transitioning From Having to Write to Wanting to Write

The way of WordPress is the way of creating content and the main contributing starting point is written content. That well-crafted story with the right call to action targeted to the right audience can open opportunities for us all.

Getting to that point where we can lead and create that relationship with our audiences can take some good old-fashioned hard work, like everything in life.

Looking back and also listening to folks that are walking the same path it is hard for many of us. The writing, writers come to word press and explode onto the scene, but then they can still struggle to create that effective sales copy.

So I guess that we are all in the same boat unless we are on top of the mountain looking out. There is a normalized view that has been around for some time,

" Build it and they will come."

The first big shock is; write it, express your self and nobody will give you the time of day the main reason is that no one knows you, from observation this can be a show stopper.

The internet doesn't care and the thing is it will not come and find you, you need to go out and find it.

I had the privilege to speak with what I would call a successful writer over the holiday period, published and receiving royalties on a regular basis.

The reasons for success, I found really interesting.

In the beginning, it is hard to identify your self as a writer. At the end of the day that is the mainstay of what we are doing. One of the biggest killers of the writing flow is, that feeling or that self-doubt whereby you feel as though your words are not worth the effort and that no one will care anyway. This in a way leads to procrastination, just so many reasons get in the way, the task just seems to be so big an obstacle to overcome that nothing is done at all except for that ever-growing list of reasons that are actually stopping us from doing what we need to do and that is.

Write, write, write.and then write some more.

That old saying practice makes perfect springs to mind.

So we have a fledgling writer with all the reasons why not too, writing had become a chore it was hard work one felt as though it was a case of having to write, a task that was just plain too hard some days.

So jump forward we have a successful writer how did we get to this new position.

When it comes to writing, look at what is causing you angst, what is your pain point and remember it is only this way until something is done about it. This may sound silly, but one of the first things was the acceptance that you will not perform at your best all the time, it can remove a lot of tension. When something seems big, then cut it down to size take it on in chunk size bits this goes for any project, the thing that happens is we can start doing it, it is not about writing that big text all in one go, this can happen when your skill set evolves, in the meantime take time to craft, break it down even to a set amount of words per day, put it aside and then revisit, edit and revise. The by-product is you will kick procrastination into touch.

The amazing thing about ideas is that everyone has them and the second amazing thing is that ideas will flow from ideas, it is one of the wonders of the universe, we can turn our little noodles into ideas machines one of the hardest things is to keep track of them all. Just a thought, does it, your next text have to be the most perfect text that was ever written, writing is that never-ending work in progress, forget about being the best or worrying about what other folks are doing or creating just focus on your own work. The more you write the better you get.

This is the big one if nobody turns up to your show, do you pack up your troubles in your old kit bag and trudge off home. No, you just keep going.

Stop and ask your self why you are writing in the first place, for us folks here it is all about creating something that will change your lives creating that spot whereby we can enhance our lifestyles.

That why will quench your thirst.

The thing that can really help is the reflection that you are unique and your voice when you find it will bring a message that no one else will, unless that is you are just following someone else.

The above was the key to success, from being that writer that has to create texts to fill content onto a website, that feeling that you have to do it, have to write, it becomes a grind a hard job and we all know about that one,

" turning up to work on a Monday morning and wishing it was 4 pm Friday afternoon kind of grind."

In creating that flow or system that suits us, we can become that writer that wants to write, that is constantly looking for that opportunity to breathe some life into that idea or message.

Transitioning from having to write to wanting to write, can break down so many barriers and provide the key to creating a sustainable future through your writing endeavors, helping you to create the lifestyle you desire.

Once you get into it, that feeling of " you mean it is time to write some more " is hard to beat.

So if you don't identify your self as being a writer then stop look in the mirror and tell your self;

I am a writer, and working at becoming a very good one. and taking it that a step further, if someone asks you, say " I am a writer and website developer " and if you have pushed that little button, Then add; " A published author " to the mix.

It can be rather empowering when you claim it.

Truer words have never been written. It's nice to hear that we are all in the same race...the human race. Yes, it's difficult not to look around and compare yourself to others, or to worry if what you write is any good in someone else's eyes. Practice, practice, practice, until you are a master of your craft. You don't fail until you give up.

Thank you Alex

This is awesome Alex, I will put me in the procrastination group. Many times I begin to write and finish my article and read iThen I decided to delete it cause it did not sound right.

Like you said, I always wonder if anyone would show up. I now see that I need to write and write and keep writing, and the ideas would flow.and if no one shows up, keep writing. Reading this post was for me, I have been struggling in this area for years. Thank you for this post, a definite bookmark for future reference.

I will take your advice and begin to write, please feel free to give me some feedback when I do. Thanks and make it a great Sunday!

I loved reading this post Alex, especially when you say, "It can be rather empowering when you claim it.".

There is so much value in making a conscious decision to shift from "I'm trying to be..." to "I am.."

Even if it doesn't quite feel that you're there yet, the difference it makes to one's mindset and outcomes is quite staggering.

Hi Mark, that shift in mindset can cause an immense shift, some folks say fake it till you make it I like to think of it as on the job training. The key is to claim it, even if it feels like you are not quite there yet. Just step up to the plate and knock that ball out of the park.

Great Post Alex, it is like you are talking to me since is exactly what i am going thru at this moment, in my case procrastination leads to a feelings of guilt and a lot of getting down, but then when one think it can't get any worse, i open my email and find your inspiring post and i can see a light at the end of the tunnel. I guess that is what quality content is all about and that is to solve a problem to your readers.

You definitely nail it Alex!!!!! Thanks a lot.

Regards.
Javier..

Hi Javier, thank you for your kind words and you are most welcome. there seem to be some hurdles that we need to get over or be working on even before the concept of making money as an affiliate marketer.
Creating content is the key that unlocks so many doors, creating quality content almost guarantees the ability to create something that is sustainable especially if it is combined with strong and relevant keywords.
All the best for your content creation in 2018.

Excellent Post Alex. Thanks for the kick. A writer is a writer is a writer.......I can be the one or I am the one makes the difference.
I try to stop thinking by trying to make my mind blank, but it never happens or can be blank for few seconds only, which proves that there is no dearth of ideas but our procrastination to take that natural action of putting our ideas on paper ( Wow, I am feeling like a writer now and would like to post on this topic. LOL). Thanks and Regards.

Hi Gaurav, I would say post away, the thing is that we all feel the same way until we make that transition and come out and declare that we are in fact writers, just doing that can give us so much clarity of thought and vision. really pleased that you found some value in this post.
All the best for your writing endeavors in 2018.

A great break down and walk through. All the elements you mention seem to resonate with what I have just gone through. With the holidays, system malfunction, and on and on. To take that first step beyond all that and just push to get over it, seemed to me to take forever. Now that I realize, I'm not alone, brings light into what was obscure. Alex, thank you for this great post. Great work.

Hi Xavier, thank you for sharing your experiences and thoughts itis so helpful and much appreciated. One of the things that we can overlook in our angst at times is that we are all on the same journey and many of us share the same problems, one of the very good things about the WA community is that we can share and gain an understanding from the responses and have that realization that we are not the only one.

Hi Alex,
The point you made about "you are unique" grabbed me. Some people may like our style but then others won't.
I like your style, you've given the subject great thought. As you said we may be unknown in the beginning but when someone discovers us it's like a magnet, others come.
Ever seen an empty shop? someone comes in and starts buying and then next thing you know there is a line of people waiting to be served.
Best of luck,
Cheers Jae

Classic Jae, I know the empty shop and also the warehouse full of stock, also the fire sale and how a couple of customers can draw many more, I really like that one, thanks for sharing.
The same rings true for content and that is evident every day here in WA some real gems fly under the radar, mainly from folks just starting out. 0,1, 3, 4, 5 comments and then you are flying 45, 62, 79 92, just a matter of hanging in there, same rings true for website engagement.
Been hanging with newer members, once the training wheels come off we can fly.

I am a writer; I have been well-paid for my writing for many years. But it has been a very long time since I have written for myself, and I now have anxieties about leaving my work out in the open. This is the tension I feel right now.

When I write for my wages, the work is protected by those who pay for it. It makes me feel safe about my investment of effort. But little-old me feels anxious about making a transition to blogging... for free. Just uploading it online, without any promises. It's a weird transition, I know.

What would Hemingway do? Would he be a tweeter? Would Dostoyevsky have a blog? How would they move between their public and private processes?

Thanks so much for the wonderful prompt. Much appreciated.

Hi Ivy
Thank you for chiming in and sharing your thoughts and insights, I am sure many will get so much value from your comment and thank you for your honesty. It can be hard to put ourselves out there a definite work in progress.

In terms of Hemmingway, I think the recipe was from memory

2 oz white rum (Havana Club if you have it)
3/4 oz fresh grapefruit juice.
1/2 oz fresh lime juice.
1/4 oz Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur.
1/4 oz simple syrup 1:1.
Garnish with a grapefruit twist.

Sit back relax and reflect, and let your fingers hit the keys. A little before the time of keyboards.

Trading our writing for money or reward can change the complexity of things, the clock hits 5 and we can leave it until tomorrow.

One of the big bridges to cross is the ability to hit the publish button and let our content float away. The aspect that we need to get our heads around is that we need to learn to let our words speak for us in our absence, in doing so we can create a real and authoritative online presence.
Thank you for stopping by and very good to meet you. Best wishes for 2018.

Oh, publishing is not an issue, 'pressing the button' has been my quotidian experience for years.

But there is safety in this work, which I don't sense in blogging.

My anxiety is most of all attached to how my professional peers will judge my decision to blog. It's not the done thing. I worry about that a lot. But at the same time, I'm willing to show them how useful, and how respectable it can be.

I've heard a good many dismissive jokes being told about blogging that perhaps make me tread more cautiously than I should. Perhaps a glass of Hemingway and some devil-may-care Dutch courage will help? ;)

Lovely to meet you, too.

Classic Ivy, I can see your position the question that pops into my head is are you writing for, your colleagues and peers or are you writing for yourself and in the process creating your very own online business.

"Oh I haven't seen Ivy lately, oh she has signed off got her own business living the dream,.......................... can't wait until my holidays in 6 months time ..................her own business so she doesn't have to work here anymore yes that right.

Thanks Alex , this is indeed something I wish to remind and inspire others within WA.

I am pushing myself to write even though the topic is not relevant to the internet space but it is something I wish someone able to find it relevant and can help to change their perspective of live for better , if they follow what’s in my writing.

Writing and podcasting are becoming more popular. Nowadays, we rely on internet for information that could help us to drive our approach out for others to know and be heard.

Sometimes, we just don’t really know what we are posting and would rather think twice before replying a posting, or high I find this is more erf drive for me and for the reader to read.

Podcasting would be a general topic in time to come and it can be beneficial for affiliate marketer but I just feel writing and podcasting would seem to be a different topic and content would rather twisted when it comes to speaking and writing.

So, writing in blog or post would stay forged and continue to have evergreen effect , this is for sure when the bible is being translated over and kver again with different version just to get reader understand the content, so for us , we are just doing the same thing.

John.

Well done John, pushing yourself to write will set you on the right road to creating some really good content. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and adding to the conversation.

Because (I know never begin a sentence with because) we find writing fulfilling, we are motivated to reveal our thoughts and feelings into words that others can unpack to make their own. Sentences are published, we are not talking to ourselves alone but are inviting others to engage with us. To agree or not sgree, to further our constructs is to feel ourselves engaged and, yes, alive.

Yes, I truly agree on this.

Well said Janet, I guess to a degree we are the instigators of the conversation that well-crafted piece can draw folks in and it can be the stat of some really positive engagement, at the end of the day that is or should be our goal.

Excellent post Alex. I believe I am in the transition period. Life gets in the way sometimes but, I know that I must continue to write and make it better. My favorite line was that if no on shows up, keep going. Consistency is the goal of this year. Thank you for sharing the information.

Hi Melissa, You are on the right track once we get to that point where we feeling good and confident about our writing we are well on the way.
Many folks are striving to be consistent, all the very best with your writing aspirations this year and thank you for sharing your thoughts.
