To Make More Time Value Your time; It Is Precious.

We do not know how many grains of sand that there are in the hourglass, so it is a matter of living life to the fullest possible extent. The humanness of being a human can be the most significant sidetracks of them all.

One of the coolest things to learn in business is to make every moment count. If we do not measure time, then we are missing a huge opportunity to expand our horizons.

So true when it comes to our online endeavors, how many times, online do we set sail on a little exploration and some hours later come up empty-handed. Does time online get fragmented where it speeds up exponentially? That sense of deflation at the lack of achievement and that promise not to be so silly until the next time we fall.

Sometimes the best expression of time can be to start tapping on the keys with a rough plan in mind and see what occurs as the words fall effortlessly onto the screen like the waves breaking on the shore.

It is something that I have become acutely aware of during the lock down. Go and ask some folks that you know;

Okay, what did you do through the lock down?

I would guarantee that you get this perplexed look.

"Well, I had plans I was going to do heaps."

"Never did anything, really."

" Don't know where the time went."

The arrow in the bull's eye, "I don't know where the time went."

Time and life are a storm that we have to navigate, and it can be so easy to get lost at sea. One of the reasons we do get lost is that we do not place a value on our time and so it is easy to fritter it away or worse still let others spend our precious time for us.

I was not talking about family and loved one's time; I am talking business and creating a living time. If we do not value our time, we can squander it so efficiently.

Lockdown equals squandered time for many.

Many look at the equation from the wrong perspective. The crazy adage time is money has been dead in the water forever. The truth is that many do not value time; it is valued for us. We get a job and are paid for our time.

We are time traders.

That being the case, we need to put a value on our time. It is a perplexing thing; as soon as we value our time, it takes on a different complexion.

You sit there and say my time is worth $ 200 dollars per hour; my charge out rate on discount is $150 for my services; my time on this project will be X to the power of ten.

First thing that happens is that we say in our heads.

I can not charge that much. No way I am not worth that; I will expose my self as a fraud. It is one of those things that are outside our realms of experience. It ends up sitting on the shelf. So many undervalue their time.

You may agree or not; if we work, then we have to set the value of what we find acceptable to receive. The boss will buy your time for the least amount possible.

That is business.

If you want change put a value on your time

It is powerful; it utilizes something primal; we all have this capacity, it is one of our gifts.

Let's chock it down a peg lets say $ 50 per hour. If you look at what you are getting paid, that may be a pay rise, or it may be a very acceptable amount starting.

We are looking form an online perspective.

I can see you saying, but hey Alex, I am not making any money with my blog, or you may say hey I am not making that much with my blog the hours I put in.

"This isn't a get-rich-quick scheme."

As an example, we have 10 hours a week to invest in creating a business; Joe is working full time; he can only manage 10 hours.

10 x 50 = 500 per week.

13 weeks in a quarter

13 x 500 =6500 per quarter.

The key is to look at time as a value proposition.

It is not so much about managing time. It is about valuing time as soon as we do that the whole game takes on a different perspective.

If someone is wasting your time or worse, still you are wasting your time, it costs you money. With this concept, a clarity evolves, you can become very focused.

I can hear you saying that it is crazy that it will never work. The reality is that we want to transition from where we are to where we want to be. To do this, we need income.

As soon as something has a value proposition attached, it becomes something that we can measure and manage. Time once valued becomes precious that can be a powerful driver.

In the transition, we need to value our skill sets and perhaps redefine our course. Here in WA, we are all learning new skill sets that could help the navigation, you set a value, and you know your currency, you have a tradable commodity.

You want your blogs to be top dogs, of course, that is what we are learning. In the transition, a little help from your new or refined skills could be helpful; three that pop to mind;

Writing as a service.

Proofreading.

Website creation.

I am sure that you could add to the list?

If we use website creation, you are doing it for yourself here in WA; it is only a small shift in parameters to create a website for someone else or business.

That rule of thumb $ 50 per hour 10 hours to do a WordPress website. Who knows your market benchmark, maybe $1000 per Wordpress website. That's a pay rise.

Getting your A to B jiggy on, it can be done, and it starts with that value equation.

It is a process; how much is your time worth to you?

I have found this useful, so I thought that I would share it with you, I would be keen to know what you think. The main benefit has been that I have stopped wasting time on the things that don't matter in the greater scheme of things; that is a value add.

Thank you for reading.

That's an interesting question Alex and the more interesting is the fact I have never asked myself this question.

Many spend their time just watching tv which is, in my view, "waste of time". I used to be a workaholic which is the opposite extreme. So I can't use the common sentence "time is money", that would only make me work too hard again. Of course we have a limited amount of time. But I believe there's different timing for everyone and I can't rush anymore.

For me, it's most about how and who with I spend my precious time feeling happy and doing things I love.
I love learning so I always learn something. I'm never bored.
Thanks for this food for thoughts.
Lenka

Hi Lenka,

Thank you for your thoughtful response, I guess it is about placing a value on our time, it doesn't have to be a monetary value.

Once we get that appreciation we can be more measured about how we invest that time; as we know it waits for no one.

Alex.

Fabulous post. Truly.

Value time. Our time. Super important to get this mindset right.

Your post reminded me of a Youtube video by Jazza (artist and art teacher) who pointed out that people think it is okay to ask for free work from hard working professionals in the creative arts.

In the video he went out with a hidden camera to show an artists perspective on getting paid. TIME / MONEY.

I'm slowly getting there, mindset wise.

With regards to wasting time doing things that don't matter, I HAVE got that under control. I used menial chores as a distraction and thought, it's okay I'm still doing stuff. NO!!!

Because cleaning the bathroom will not get that 2000 word post written, that PIN idea completed or the info into the info-graph. No sireee.... SO glad I don't do that anymore.

I appreciate your blog post very much Alex.

Louise

Hi, Louise, I am glad that you enjoyed this post, I think it is something that we all need to come to terms with.

Creatives are some of the most challenged, how do we value our time and also feel comfortable sharing a fair price for it.

As to blogging if we place a value on our time and track it we then place a value on the time we spend with distractions, io think you put it very well Louise, we spend too much time on some non-productive tasks, it is costing us money in real terms.

If we value our time the people around us also gets sense of urgency.

Thank you for stopping by and sharing, much appreciated.

Alex

I knew this was worth saving. You have touched on something that goes beyond the basic economics of 'trade'. This is about how we view ourselves.
Not only of what we think we're worth as a monetary amount, it's more to do with how we rate our own abilities.
I have written hundreds of thousands of words since I began here at WA, yet would I call myself a 'writer' ? No, even though others have. (Well, once)
I have built three websites but I wouldn't even consider offering myself as a website builder.
Even though two of the sites are in the process of being monetised, I still don't class myself as an 'entrepreneur'.
What stops us from realising our true worth ? Is it modesty or a lack of self-confidence ?
A new title ? I might try it on for size, next time someone asks what it is that I do.
Thank you Alex, today is a 'take action' day and I am so glad I read this.

The seeds can be sown right in the beginning, the online world can be challenging and from observation we can be our biggest challenges.

The key can be to value our time, it becomes a driver and also gives a sense of worth. the interesting thing is that there are so many working from home at the moment if people are paid then we know the value, if it is for ourselves it can be hard to place and create the value when we do it can be empowering.

Thanks for stopping by, Twack, at the end of the day we need to step up and claim it.
Alex

You're very welcome. Time to stake my claim.

"We are time traders"...I like that...nice phrase.

Yes, I am very aware of the limits of time and try to plan my day accordingly. I do waste some time, but for the most part can stay focused, so long as I know what my task is to be. Indecision does not help. However, we all have to try to do our best.

Hi Fran, it is quite a cool one aye, some days I scare myself I am not sure where the words come from.

The system is designed to make us unaware, and when we step back and start to make decisive decisions and most importantly take action things start changing.

It is always easier said than done, having that focus and mindset kind of helps us a lot.

Definitely a work on progress.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts Fran, I agree with you.
