This is going to work!
I am now closing in on three months here a WA. I am learning everyday, but yet there doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day to accomplish what I want to. Posting on a consistent basis and following all of the proper SEO criteria has my site indexed but in most cases on page 4 or further back. I have a sense that lack of engagement is holding my site back and not quite sure how to remedy the problem. My point is that every answer to every problem will not be found here a WA. We have to be willing to think outside the box and search for answers in a lot of places. WA is a good foundation, but we are on a journey of discovery, and WA could not possibly be all that we need in all cases, but the community can help each other with all of their experiences outside of WA. To make affiliate marketing work for anybody it takes an attitude of never giving up. I will find the answers to making an income with online marketing wherever they come from, and no matter how long it takes. That is my perspective. Having said that, what can you share with our small community that you have learned outside of WA that could help all of us crack the code for getting engagement and discussion on our sites? In many cases, google sees your site and knows what is there, but they are saying nobody cares. Until you demonstrate that people care by social engagement on your site we will not move you up. So it is a vicious circle, you need social engagement on your site, but you can't get it unless you have some decent page rank. So now it's your turn, what solutions to this dilemma have you come up with? Go.

Personally, still working on the social engagement part of things. It's really difficult to make that transition from a thinker to a talker.
I know what you mean Andy, I have spent my life keeping quiet about a lot of things even though I had my thoughts. Now we have to open up and put it out there.
Get members to comment on your posts - this will improve your engagement. Engagement does not necessarily need to be with social media, if Google sees that your posts are being commented on and you are replying to those comments then that will help your site' engagement.
Just my 2 cents
Thanks Strap, I have done this from time to time, but at the same time I don't want to be a squeaky wheel, you know what I mean?

My comment is just that we need to make our posts readable by humans and sometimes ignore Googlebot. Correct spelling, grammar and breaking up the text into small paragraphs make for better readability. Using subheadings and images also improve the reading experience. ~Marion
