Building a business (You need a plan)

I want to build a business...

So, a friend of mine said to me that she wanted to have her own business. I said great! What are you going to do?

This was met with "I don't know I just want to be rich!"

I then played devil's advocate and said, you want to be rich, you want to have a business, but you haven't the slightest clue what your going to do?

Then I asked her, do you have money to start a business? Is it a brick and mortar or online business?

Will you have employees, do you know what your marketing budget will be? What about products...what products will you sell?

All of my questions were answered with "I don't know"

I proceeded to ask more questions and then said "well you will want to clear at least %75 profit from whatever you sell if it's your own product. You will need to set aside money for your marketing and money to pay taxes.

If its in a shop you will need to find location at a reasonable rate and if your not making your own products to sell you need to find a manufacturer that can produce your products at %25 or less than what your making.

She then said actually I want to be more of an entrepreneur.

Now we are getting somewhere!

O.k. Great! Have you ever heard of Affiliate Marketing?

You can create an online business or store and promote various amounts of products with no overhead and make commission per sale.

This is where I laid the cold hard facts on her and said "You must have a plan of action". You cannot just wake up and say I want to be rich and own a business.

Unfortunately it doesn't work this way, for many people this is what happens. People think out of the blue that they can just start a business and watch money roll in.

It takes planning and hard work. Lots of trial and error and passion.

Then I said one thing you must do is Never give up!

figure out what your passionate about and build a business around that. After this I gave her my website and told her to look around.

Remember, building an online business is as equally as difficult as building a brick and mortar with exceptions. You still have to put a lot of work into it, but you can get more out of it.
