Am I Wasting My Time?

Hey.

I have been a member of WA for just under one month and the more I am learning the more I' starting to wonder if I'm wasting my time with my current "niche". The name of my website is "Home with Shan" where I share tips and advice on how to make your house a home and keeping it clean.

I know this isn't really a niche because it's so varied but I thought it was really hard, to begin with, to find something that I wouldn't get bored and too restricted writing about.

The reason I'm now starting to question myself is 1. because there is actually a youtube account with the same name as my website so its going to be pretty impossible to ever get ranked high on Google with my website name.

With the posts I've been doing as well such as Top 10 Cleaning Products and things like that I am wondering if this means that no one is going to actually click on my website and read my post. What I tend to do is read the summary at the top of Google when I have a question and I never end up actually clicking on the website.

Should I start all over again with a new website or keep going for the next year or so and see how things go?

Thanks in advance for any advice and please be kind haha

Shannon

Shannon I have been running my own global business for 30 years.

It is all part of the process of business to doubt, that's what an entrepreneur does best.

Stick to it, and learn more and you will overcome all your doubts.

Doubts are good things. A signal that perhaps you need to redirect you efforts.

Trust that instinct, it will guide yo to success.

Shannon No such thing wasting your time, you just want direction from our been there done that, ha ha

Their suggestions are worth to take it and see how you feel then you can only decide what makes you see whats the best!

Best of luck to all journey here,

I typed in "Home With Shan" and saw the YouTube channel but I also saw a website called "At Home With Shan" in case you were thinking of changing the name to that.

I think as far as keeping this niche, and this is just a guess, you should be fine as long as you find the right keywords that will get you to the first page on Google (People don't search for "Home With Shan" but ie "best cleaning product." That is what you are trying to rank for. And that is something Partha talks extensively about in his blogs.

Here's two from Partha I recommend: When I was questioning my niche, I reached out to my mentor and he said not to change it.

Plus, I recently found out there is a YouTube channel and Facebook Group by the same name as my website.

Hope this helps,
Lynn

Hi Shannon
You are certainly not wasting your time!

You're at least learning what works and what doesn't!

It's unfortunate that you chose a name that clashes with someone else on Youtube. As Simone says, competition is not a bad thing, it shows the niche has legs. I see you've also started your own Youtube channel...

if I were you, (and I'm not of course so ignore this if you like), I'd change my site and youtube channel to have the same name... perhaps "Shannon B At Home" for example, or similar. Or think bigger... think about creating a brand.

The thing about thinking "brand" is that you can use the one name for a series of related niches. Are you actually Scottish? Is there perhaps value in creating a brand that reflects Scottish values?

I think your content is developing well... not enough yet to draw any conclusions...

If you'd like some constructive criticism for your site I'll happily comment but only if you want it.

Also, if you haven't already asked the community for feedback, I'd recommend doing so to get balanced opinions: :-)

This may help you decide. If you do decide to keep it I would recommend you write say 10 articles on how to clean your house without chemicals. Then choose another topic and write 20 articles that way you will get more traction more quickly. Rather than writing one recipe article, one article how to keep the dog tick free, et cetera
