I chose a theme that on my main page, each of the post will also have a picture on the left of it. However, I did not find where can I add these pictures on wordpress? Nor can
The themes I have tried pick the picture from your content especially the first picture in your content.
Try checking with the settings especially the Appearance part.

You will have to set your Featured Image for each post you create.
In the WordPress editor at the bottom of the Right Side Menu you will see a link/button that says Featured Image.
Click there and upload the photo you want to appear on your website home page next to that associated post.
